Rogue One didn't just do well at the box office, it received extremely positive reviews from critics and fans alike. Even so, it's still way too early to judge these films as being problematic or successful based on 1 movie. You talk about each standalone being one of difficulty, yet forget that there have just been 2 in production so far, yet also forget that the sequel trilogy wasn't without its problems either (Trevorrow getting fired). Additionally, you forget that the anthology films doesn't necessarily have to be prequels. And while Rogue One was technically a prequel to ANH, it was still its own standalone story.

A character doesn't have to die in a film to make it a good and interesting film. Even though we know Obi-Wan can't die, seriously, how many heroes in films die? Very few. Take the Bond films for example: We know that Bond will never die in a film, still, there are many good and compelling Bond films.

Also, I've seen plenty of good prequel films. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, for example, takes place before the events of the first Indiana Jones.

Well Rogue One's reception was good, but still mild compared to The Force Awakens and movies like Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope. But it saving grace was that it featured new characters whose fate was not set in stone due to the 'prequel' nature of the movie. I seriously think that Rogue One's model is the way forward. The problems of Treverrow were not because he had difficulty handling the material, but because his working ethic can be described as 'authoritarian'. That's why he was fired. But for the rest, the sequels have had a clean streak.

Just think as it as follows. Which movie would be more effective. An Obi Wan movie in a world were we only had the prequels and not the originals? Or an Obi Wan movie in a world where we have both? I seriously think the former. It could be a good movie, I could be wrong, if they introduce new characters in which Obi Wan might have a stake, but whose fate is uncertain, it might work. James Bond might not die, but his new girlfriend might.

Empire Strikes Back received mixed reviews upon its initial release, it was not until later many realized how good it actually was.

The only reason why the sequels "have had a clean streak" is because Colin was hired as the director for Episode IX such a long time before production of the film started. So, they had more time to figure out whether or not he was unfit for the job. Rogue One and Solo had a much tighter schedule.

So, the key to success might just be better long-term planning. And it seems they are learning from their mistakes.

That's exactly what I think is going to happen, provided that they stick to doing one movie a year instead of taking breaks or doing two movies in a year.

If this is right, they'll have to officially announce the Obi-Wan movie pretty soon, right? I can't remember the timeline for all the extant films, but for a 2020 film, it seems like they'd have to pick a director sometime early next year. Of course, maybe they'll withhold the information and wait a while before making an official announcement; but would they have any motivation for doing so? It would be interesting to find out what kind of typical delay is between the internal finalization of such a decision, and its public announcement. Do we know how that has worked up until now?

My guess - it gets formally announced shortly before Solo is released - and it will likely have a May 2021 release date.

I would actually say an announcement after Solo is released. this way, they can 100% focus on Solo promotion in the first half of 2018.As Solo is coming out in May 2018, that means that there will very likely be a year and a half gap between Solo and episode 9. This 'long' period without a Star Wars movie release is the perfect time to announce the third anthology movie.

As a side note, after the Kenobi movie (hopefully) they should take a break of one or two years before releasing the Rian trilogy, just to hopefully reduce potential of people burning out on Star Wars.

Do you really think they'll leave 2020 without a Star Wars film?

I love Ewen too much to completely agree with everything you said.. as i would dearly love to see him running around as Kenobi again.

before they started making new SW films recently, my one piece of advice to both LF and Disney would have been to NOT make films to fill in blanks. Make films that are completely new... always move forward with whatever story you want to tell.

Rogue One worked for a few reasons, firstly it was a ruddy good film.. secondly getting new Star Wars films is new and fresh still, and thirdly.. despite the fact that we knew that they would succeed in getting the plans, we did not know what would happen to the main characters.

Solo may do brilliantly, but i have reservations as the prospect of it doesn't 'tickle my fancy' like everything else.

i do however want to see a Kenobi movie.. but that's my heart talking, not my brain.

I wouldn’t mind reading a book about whatever Kenobi was up to between episodes 3 and 4 and such, but I’d really rather LFL commit their multi-million dollar film budgets going somewhere new and not demystifying their legacy characters. I’ve never been keen on standalone movies in general though. But that’s my problem I guess. Nobody's making me watch them.
