If it was going into production next month we certainly would have heard of a casting call by now. I'm still 80% convinced that the 2020 film will be Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story, but we haven't heard anything concrete. I'm guessing Lucasfilm is keeping things close to their chests after the Lord & Miller and Trevorrow blunders. I'm really hoping this comes together though.

Psst... It's a year and one month from now, not a month from now.

Haha, you're right. For some reason I skipped over the year and only focused on the month. That's actually encouraging and I can see them doing that.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE me some Obi-Wan. He was my favorite character in the OT and I loved him in the PT. However, I'm not sure they should do an Obi-Wan spin off.

Why? Well, first, what is the setting? Between III and IV? That makes the most sense, but you could have continuity issues and you could mess up the already established story (his heroic sacrifice to watch over Luke and his continuing commitment to the Jedi Order, even though the order is destroyed). Do you set it up earlier? Like his padawan days? Not sure this would be a good idea either.

Secondly, I think the idea of doing one shots of favorite characters is okay, but not really bold. I mean, that is what they are doing in the MCU, and it works for them, but you have an entire freakin galaxy to flesh out. Why rehash territory which has been covered? I'd like to see them flesh out things like the Guardians of the Whills, the formation of the Jedi order, the formation of the Sith, etc.

Lastly, as we can now see with the current film, fans have expectations about their favorites. When you do something with those characters it inevitably sends the fanbase into an uproar. Play it safe? You are criticized for cowardice. Do something bold and new? You destroyed their vision. You can't win! An Obi-Wan film just smacks of trying to play it safe and employ the MCU formula to the Star Wars universe. Hell, if you are going to do that then make a Darth Vader film set between III and IV so we can see him do his thing. Every fan boy/girl out there loves them some evil dark side Darth.

    I concur.

Although with Boba Fett supposedly back into early development, I do have to wonder if they're setting things up so that there could be some years with more than one Star Wars film.

An Obi-Wan film/trilogy set between RotS and ANH would be pretty cool.

I have to confess: I'm irritated by all the rumors and announcements concerning the Obi-Wan-movie. I would find it pretty cool, if this movie would happen, but I'm even not sure if it was confirmed by Disney or not.

It hasn't been, but THR did a report suggesting that it's in development.

Lucasfilm isn't going to announce new projects until they're ready to do so. After the trouble with Solo, I suspect that they'll keep their cards close to their vests.

I'm going on the record to say that the Obi-Wan movie will not be made if Han Solo tanks at the box office.
The next movie following EP:IX would then be the 1st film of the Rian Johnson Trilogy.

But I have been known to make mistakes...from time to time.

One, it won't, and two, even if it did tank it wouldn't have an impact on their film slate. They've made $4B and counting between 3 movies - they can afford to make a "risky" film. (Spoiler alert: Star Wars is not a risky property at this point. It was in 1977, but that time has long since passed.)

Also, fan enthusiasm for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie has been considerably greater than the mix of cautious optimism and apathy that Han Solo has been treated with from the get-go.
He hasn't even announced that he's working on the first script. It's doubtful that he'll be ready to start filming next year for a 2020 release date.

I've started to have the same line of thought, that they are looking at Solo on if they should proceed or pull the plug on Kenobi. If Solo does bad, either box office numbers or poor critically, I could see that giving them cold feet on doing stand alones that are specific to an existing character.

(However, I think despite the drama and doom & gloom reports, Solo will be a successful film!)

The only way i can see Solo not being successful is how we take to the actors. When we think of Han Solo, we think of Harrison Ford. As Han won't be played by Ford, some people may not like it.
Kenobi on the other hand, will almost certainly be played by Ewan Mcgregor. Who has already portrayed OB1 in three movies, so the Kenobi film is safer in those regards.

Yes, I don't see how Solo bombing at the box office would negatively impact the Obi-Wan film. Which, realistically speaking, it won't.

And like others have pointed out: The Obi-Wan film is something a vast majority of fans WANT. The Solo film is still met with skepticism by many fans who can't accept to see someone other than Ford playing the character.

I love ObiWan. As a little kid, he was my favorite, and that was Old Man ObiWan (as a kid, I thought old guys with beards were awesome). Then, in the prequels, Ewan MacGregor gave the best performance in the whole prequel trilogy, so that was reinforced.

However, I'm skeptical of an ObiWan Anthology between III and IV. I just don't know that enough happened. I can't see him leaving Luke, and I can't see a whole lot of big things happening around Luke. I mean, I suppose I could be wrong. I thought Rebels did it well when they had their Obi Wan Moment.

I'd rather see a younger ObiWan running around with Qui-Gon and Satine, dodging Mandalorian Warlords.

They could tie in Obi-Wan, Boba Fett and the Hutts quite neatly with a reluctant Owen Lars in the sidekick role, in a tale set around Mos Eisley and at furthest some outer rim spots where the Empire’s reach isn’t that great. Ticks a lot of boxes and I’d pay to see MacGregor and Joel Edgerton reprise their roles. I’ve said elsewhere there’s more to explore between Kenobi and Lars judging by the latter’s behaviour in ANH.

    You. You get it.

Also, judging by how the internet is now collectively all-in with Solo once the footage finally dropped, I think we should stop being overly-worried about Obi-Wan's chances.

It would make sense for an Obi-Wan movie to be made as fans are calling for it and there is a pretty big gap to be filled between episodes III and IV. I don't think any announcement will be made until Solo is released as they won't want to divert the attention away from that film.
