Something about episode 2 of Obiwan doesn’t sit right with me. Remember what Leia said in her message in ANH?

General Kenobi. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire.

I believe that this strongly implies that Obiwan and Leia had never met before. Why would Leia introduce herself by saying “You know my father” rather than “I’m the girl you saved from a kidnapping”?

At first I thought, okay, Leia doesn’t know she met Obiwan - she just thought it was some dude named Ben. But then young Leia very clearly hears the name “Obiwan” at least twice, and she may have also read it on the Wanted poster.

There’s a lot to like here, but that doesn’t make sense to me.

Or, maybe the perceived issue here isn't an issue at all.
It seems like you're trying to force an entire concept of "backstory" on one scene. There's, quite obviously, a lot more to her character than this alone.

It's not a contradiction, because kids can change interests apparently. :D

Her being outdoors isn't really the issue here... If I was the screenwriter I would've kept this part but instead have her sit on a secret location and spying on people in the streets with some sort of binoculars, playing around and imagining that she's looking for some bad guys. This would've stayed true to her character much more.

So tell me, what good does it serve the story for later? Do you think Leia's expertize in spaceships will be utilized in the plot? If it was a new character, this would be a great way of tying knots together. However, if the previous shows are any good indication this won't be the case.

It's consistent for Leia to be interested in ships at 10. She's the princess who will be involved in the rebellion, and she doesn't want to be a ceremonial waver, but in the action. Her whole future is space ships, and directing the material and "human" resources.

Organa is Latin for instruments. Where Luke becomes the leader of the spiritual/psychological side against darkness, Leia becomes the leader of the material resources operating in the world against darkness.

That's uh... That's exactly what happened. I mean yeah, it's a different setting than your streets and binoculars example, but:

Leia: "Ohh, a tri-wing, that's a new one. Could be an Aquillian Ranger, probably scouting for Merson pirates."
    -Droid chirps-
    Leia: "No? A trader, maybe?"

Of course not, but the fact remains that the screenwriters chose to give her this very specific hobby out of literally a thousand others.

In the old EU, Leia was never kept hidden "behind bars" on Alderaan. And why would they anyway? Nobody, not even the Emperor, knew that Anakin had twins. Both the Emperor and Vader only knew that there was 1 child out there. Hiding Leia would actually raise more suspicion, and it would make more sense to just pretend that Leia was a real Organa the whole time.

In this new canon, however, they added this so that the screenwriters could give Leia the same traits as Luke.

The most important thing about story is reaching your audience, especially in regards of emotions. Everything else is secondary.

It's also important to make a character believable. Yes, stories aren't real life, but they are based on it. So, if you want to depict a child, you handleiit differently than you would do for an adult.

Furthermore having Leia already be the same exact character as she is in ANH limits her growth as character. As @Iotatheta already mentioned- having Leia to show interest in politics would be boring. You don't want your audience to feel bored. Feeling bored is bad feeling, a bad emotion. This brings my argument full circle. Emotions are key to a successful story.

I'm not really part of the cinema or big movies world, but I do work in the advertisment business, especially in the area of corporate films. If you want to get the customers' attention, then you have to tingle their emotions.

Consistency is like continuity in editing. Yes, you want to look out for it as much as possible, but in the end it's more important to get the best possible and most entertaining story out there.

But I'm losing myself here- I just want to say: Consistent storytelling isn't as important as you think. But I do agree with you, 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' is far from perfect storytelling. But IMO it's solid.

No, it's not what happened. The scene heavily implies that she's interested in different ship types and what they do, while she's looking into the sky dreaming about escaping the planet just like them. It sets the tone in a different way than looking down on a street....

I’d ask the opposite, does every detail need to be used later? And if we want to be technical, it was already used as what allowed her to be kidnapped. I don’t see this as expertise in flying ships or their systems. It sounds more like “i know what ships those are called and I like watching them fly off” and making fantasies out of that. Compared to Rey where her expertise was more intimate as she actively was taking ships apart.

like this. Couldn’t remember the exact way it was said. Watching and making up adventures they could be going on.

edit: as a note, I’m sure Bail has reasons for keeping her in besides “we must meep her secret so no one finds her.” Otherwise, she wouldn’t be at the party with out politicians, and her parents specifically mentioned her going to the Young Senators thing, which is where she is in the one book by Claudia Grey. So they have intent to have her in the public as well

    Exactly.

Because of the device the uses with Breha to send him an holoskype ?
    I'm wondering too.
I took it as : the fact that Obiwan thinks to Anakin, is perceived by Anakin, and that awakes him. Y'know. Kind of force-notification "#ObiwanKenoibi thought about you"

That card that seems from Sabacc that Haja gives to Obi-Wan and says "they are waiting to help you" means we will see Lando, Han, Qi'ra or someone from Crimson Dawn?
    Maul maybe?

Mmmmmm I am start thinking that maybe 6 episodes are not enough and the show will be so interesting at the end to know more.
And 2 episodes and no Vader. Hope we will see him more than a few minutes.

@NinjaRen Nice to meet you, I'm a screenwriter myself, not for big films either but mainly for commercials so we could shake hands. I think both you and me should know that working with commercials isn't really comparable with film and television. When you're telling a story in 20-30 seconds you have to maximize the attention of the viewer every single second. You can play around with shots much more, be more creative, be more wild. You can reshoot stuff easily, and the script is more like guidelines rather than rules. So you can change a lot as long as the focal emotion is present in the final product. This simply isn't the case for a TV epsiode which is almost 1 hour long. But not to steer away from the topic too much...

Having Leia being interested in something that's more consistent with her character in ANH does not make her the same character in ANH - there's so much more to a person than their interests. Otherwise, how would you make a biographical film about a sport prodigy interesting if they've had the same interest for a sport since childhood? Just because you think Leia being interested in politics is boring doesn't mean that everyone thinks so.

Besides, it doesn't take much to reach an audience when you got a property like Star Wars on your hands, so you've got a lot more leeway than compared to a relatively unknown property. So I think Star Wars can get away with a lot more (sadly).

I really disagree with you saying that "consistent storytelling isn't as important as you think", because it most certainly is. Heck, it was one of the first things I learned at film school. I mean, sometimes you can play around with suspension of disbelief but that doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't stay consistent. One of my favorite movie trilogies, the Lord of the Rings, has an extremely high consistency and they're pretty well-loved by others too if I recall correctly. And yes, they're based on a book series written by an author who paid extreme attention to detail, but still.

Agreed. With so much to like about the series so far.....unless something changes drastically going forward, we now have two consecutive Disney SW TV series with underwhelming scores, IMO.

And I have a nagging feeling, as I did at the beginning of TBOBF, that the bar was set so ridiculously high by The Mandalorian, we may not reach that sort of magic in a SW TV series again.

Honestly, it was completely better than I expected. Well pleased with the performances and story-telling. I was disappointed going in because of TBOBF(wasn't happy with how they portrayed him).

I have high expectations from Star Wars in general and expect a lot for a 45-year-old brand. Nothing groundbreaking though. I heard and followed a lot of rumors stating various scenarios on how the show would play out. This new age of Star Wars fans has made me almost completely disconnect from media source outlets & dedicated Star Wars content channels because of the toxicity. Often times it is deserving and not.

To see the hopelessness in Kenobi is something I had an inclination towards badly and was not let down. From the get-go, you see his struggles. The constant flashbacks, PTSD, and auditory hallucination voices were all done extremely well. I enjoyed seeing his everyday life working as a butcher and the sudden hints of defiance he had towards his employers. When his boss looked at him in disgust as the viewer I got furious knowing the boss knows nothing of the lifelong journey Ben has been concealing.

The Third Sister... I still feel.. different about her character. It's something I can't quite get my finger on but, Reva comes off as the strong independent female character we are used to seeing be portrayed in movies/tv shows. I think it makes sense for her to be so ambitious and power-hungry because the inquisitors are all about gaining power for themselves. I wasn't the least bit surprised seeing her stab the Grand inquisitor. I can't figure out if her hatred for the Jedi stems from them not being able to sense Order 66 and the downfall of the Jedi. I see it more as her having hatred for the council's lack of understanding on the deposition of The Republic. Being left behind. Brainwashed at the hands of the Empire and more.

Not much to say about Luke other than at this point in Star Wars he's just a random boy on a desert farm.

Leia Organa's character I didn't expect much from, but overall I'm glad they decided to spend some film in her area of the story. I absolutely love Leia's stubbornness. She reminds me of a younger Ahsoka Tano and 19-Year-Old Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars. The chase scenes were... a little bit unnecessary and gave me TBOBF vibes, but overall enjoyed her screentime.

When I first view the trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi the Grand Inquisitor's appearance was off-putting. While watching the show it wasn't much of an issue. 5th Brother looked more on the side of Cosplay than any alien creature.

    Overall amazing first 2 episodes.

I mean, he called himself Ben and the whole situation was traumatic.. maybe she blanks things out from her memory later (the fake jedi calling him Obi Wan) and barely remembers anything except a jedi saving her. Leia also meets a ton of important people in her younger life, seeing as she's a Royal. Maybe she isn't sure that it was Obi Wan specifically who saved her when she did that recording, but suspected it might have been.

I expect things to be added to canon later, maybe a conversation between Leia and Obi Wan on the Death Star. Maybe Leia remembers later on (after Obi Wan's death) that it was him who saved her.. probably discusses it with Luke around the pre-ESB period.

    "General Kenobi,
Years ago you served my father in the clone wars. Now, he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person. But, my ship has fallen under attack, and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me Obi-wan Kenobi. You're my only hope."

It's a formal request from her father until the very end when she gets personal and admits she needs help too. The end is the only time she asks for help. Her father asked and received help in the Kenobi series too. She's still a very young woman in A New Hope. No big deal that she said hey my dad asked if you could help him out.

Interesting thoughts. My issue with Leia was that it seemed to me the writer(s) laid it on a bit thick with her snarkiness. At several points I was like "ok we get it, she's a smart ass". But I didn't think it was too bad (at least not for me) just something that was a minor annoyance.

The character I really didn't like was Reva. I felt like her performance was pretty one dimensional. She pushes the other inquisitor in the alley and it looked totally fake to me. Like you could TELL she was acting.

As I said in an earlier post, not deal breakers for me. Still give the show a high grade and I'm looking forward to seeing more.
