I know others have already responded but I feel compelled to add my two-cents worth. When my son was 10 years old, we lived two blocks from a dead-end street that overlooked an interstate. He loved to go there on walks and point out to me the make of vehicles that passed by.

For what its worth, he never ended up with a career involved cars and trucks. But at 10 years old, he sure enjoyed watching the cars go by on the interstate -- and what Leia was doing was the intergalactic version of the same thing. It was a screenwriter trick for showing the audience how smart she was for her age and IMHO wasn't out-of-line in any way, shape, or form.

As a fan who wasn't keen on the PTs back in the day, I have been blown away by HOW DAMN GOOD those first two episodes were. It's exciting to see a high-quality series that is going to bridge the gap between the PTs with ANH. I just finished watching Episode II today and it was another big WOW. The ending of Episode II with the Force-connection between Obi-wan and Anakin was as good as it gets!!! Of all the SW shows and films I've watched over the years, I'd have to say that Ewan McGregor's acting in these first two episodes has been as strong as anyone we've ever seen in SW going all the way back (ironically) to the performance of Sir Alec Guinness as Obi-wan Kenobi in ANH in 1977.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 29, 2022, Original Post Date: May 29, 2022 ---
Hey, let's give the Obi-wan Kenobi screenwriter and Debra Chow a break here---the script for ANH was written by George Lucas over 50 years ago.

Personally, I loved the plot. I can't think of ANY scenario that would have realistically pulled Obi-wan away from watching over Luke on Tattooine than to rescue Leia. THAT was compelling in my book. As far as her 'formal' appeal to Obi-wan Kenobi in ANH, that's TEN YEARS into the future. Given the spunky character, Leia is, she's no doubt had numerous dangerous run-ins with the Empire by the time she sends her distress signal to Kenobi. Who's to say how memorable this business will be to her in the future? Heck, we don't even know yet how this all plays out yet so it seems a little early to me to be pushing the 'this bugs me' button.

    I can't wait for Episode III. Whooo-hoo!!!

I don't really see it as an issue. I don't even think we really need to try to find a workaround with the whole "she only knows him as Ben" thing. It's a request from her father, Bail and Obi-Wan are the two that have the true connection, they fought together in one war, and now Bail is asking for his services again. Leia is simply carrying out the request for her father.

I do think it's interesting to look at that message now though.

I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack, and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. - Maybe Leia had been tasked with going to Obi-Wan directly because there is familiarity between the two.

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope. - This takes on an entirely new shape in light of these two episodes. Much more weight.

Haja knows the name Obi-Wan cause he has seen him in the message for all Dayiu hunters. When he is with Leia and Obi-Wan and gives them that card, he says his real name. A 10 year old should remember this experience all his life.
Too much little details that open new forced interpretations. Some are cool and ok, some are difficult to put in perspective in the real canon.

Agreed. Writers marked too much the character of Leia.
But also have to say Leia's character has grown a little bit on me with the second viewing. Chases still poor.
And also noticed in second viewing that Reva is very plain and in some dialogs we can see she is reciting the lines.

But also agree. No big deals and I have enjoyed the episodes so far. At this point is a pretty good 8/10 and can't wait to watch more.

    Exactly!
I remember when I was 6 or 7, I could name (sitting in the backseat at night, driving home from some trip or family-get-together) makes and models of cars, just by the shape of their head- and/or taillights!

So, it's not unlikely to me to see a bored 10yo girl (that never leaves the castlegrounds), living near a spaceport, being able to name various spaceships! (I bet she's surfing the Alderanian database ona multitude of subjects, including spaceships, on a daily bases.)

Thoughts on why the screenwriters included baby Leia not wanting to be a senator (aside from having to wear itchy clothes, yuck!!)...

I think the point is going to be that something that happens to Leia in this show will change her mind and put her on the trajectory to desiring that career.

Maybe it's Obi-Wan's Ben's comment about the leader he once knew that she brings to mind. Maybe it's the mysterious people who will be there waiting when their ship lands. Maybe it's some injustice that she witnesses.

Probably a combination of things, but I'm sure this interaction between Leia and Obi-Wan will be a catalyst for change--perhaps only a small one, but still--for both of them. I'm looking forward to seeing what it is.

The speculation of Leia having and arc and the whole “i don’t want to be a senator” bit..makes me feel like I need to revisit her one book by Claudia Grey to see in what mindset she was in, in the young senators program

Seconded. I am not even finished watching it and I am completely blown away by the depth and the world building. They clearly didn't go with the easy way out on this show.

I think she is at the age where she is about to learn who she is now, and also be able to identify what kind of person she wants to become. So it certainly seems appropriate for a little "coming of age" for young Leia. She's fiery, stubborn and rebellious, but she doesn't have a target to direct it at yet, other than her parents and superiors. She doesn't have that cause to fight for yet. She's only known Alderaan, the life of a sheltered princess. I think on this adventure with Ben she finds that cause, and the desire to make a difference.

The Organas are doing an amazing job trying to protect her, but at the same time it's obviously causing some friction and creating issues for Leia. This kidnapping was quite possibly her first off-world experience... Pretty sad. Though, this is likely what launches her into her career. How ironic is that? The Organas have been protecting her in the hopes that one day she can make a difference, but it isn't until they almost lose her that she starts to become who she was always meant to be.

    Hear, hear!!

Those who cannot learn from the past, are doomed to repeat it! Alas...

That was always a weird decision to me. Instead of practical suits they animated all Clone-armor n CGI.

    I think he means Padmé.
She is Leia's mother after all... so that would be the most logical person to have young Leia remind him of.

I think it's Padmé as well, most logical option.

    Well said! My thoughts exactly!

Yes! Spot on with all 3 points! Exactly why I'm positive OB1 was talking about Padmé.

Or at ten may well have leaned pilot over waving Princess or sitting in a boring Senate.

Interests and passions change, they wax and wane and aren't all laser focused into some destiny's endgame either.

About everyone knows at least one person that is absolutely passionate about something that has about nothing to do with their job no matter how brilliant they are at it and plenty know more than a handful of folks knows with all kinds of interests they are well above the ship identifying level with.

Leia as we know her was a rebel leader, that is a gig that isn't a set path and takes all kinds of skills. As far as we know Senator was little more than a cover for her and very plausibly ceremonial under the Empire especially just before it had been so hobbled that it could be dissolved with nary a whimper more than anything anyway.

Ships are probably at least a subject of interest to any adventurous soul especially when they are "grounded" to their world in a galaxy where space travel is long mature and common.

How many hours did I spend building all kinds of models and looking at specs? Tons.

How do they inform my "character" based on my work or in anything I do now excepting the most tangential way? Zero is probably an optimistic estimation.

You have the right of this one from my perspective.

I was more thinking to the KanjiKlub [IMG]

I first thought that was a good catch, but the opening scene with the Order 66 and the padawans occured only ten years before.
    Reva is older than that.

how old would those younglings have been? Ahsoka was..12 when she became a Padawan, but iirc, that was considered early? If they were, say, 9-10, that’d put her at 19-20. If it’s not her, I guess the question would be “what is the relevance of opening with that scene?

It could be that all the escaped kids play a key role to save the day later in the story. We'll see. The actress playing Reva looks to be in her late 20's. Maybe she is playing younger.

I didn't watch every TV spot or clip, and only saw the first teaser and first full trailer (not sure if there were others). But I am pretty sure that most of the footage used in those was from these first two episodes, right? I like that they do that. No idea what is coming next!

The show has already depicted Obi-wan’s desire to commune with Qui-Gon a couple of times. I was under the impression that Liam Neeson has already been confirmed to not be in this series, which will make those scenes pure sadness with no payoff. On the other hand, it will be awesome if Qui-Gon appears after all.

Off the top of my head, I think there's a bit featuring a shot of the Inquisitor Palace (or whatever it's called) that we haven't seen yet, and a female Imperial officer striding ahead like she's got a job to do...but yes, the majority of the trailer footage has already been used. I like that too, because then I'm not checking clips off in my head as I see them: "Ooh, there's the green birds. (check!) Oh, there's the Owen sick burn. (check!) There's Obi with the binocs. (check!)" ;)

    Great discussion here…

…I am trying to find the clip of the young boys in England looking up at a formation of attacking German aircraft , arguing “those are Heinkels”…”no Messerschmidts”, I thought it was in the movie Battle of Britain. Reminds me of Leia in the tree….

She is. Moses Ingram is at least 29 or 30 years old. Reva should roughly be between her late teens to early 20s.

In addition, unless my brain has totally shut down, I don't think we have seen the yellow droid yet? Nor Obi-Wan fighting Stormtroopers in the desert?
