Yes, it's finally official. As we first told you back in February a new Obi-Wan TV series has been in the works for Disney+. Now D23 Expo brings us the official confirmation that many fans were anxiously expecting.

    Stay tuned for more...

The series already has a script and filming will begin in 2020!

No more details are available at this time. As we reported back in February we heard the series will have 6 episodes. StarWars.com is reporting that the series will take place 8 years after Revenge of the Sith.

Very excited about this. And after seeing the movie-level quality that The Mandalorian looks to have, even more so.

*please don’t make us Brits wait long Disney!*

So... then those rumors about a Boba, Jabba and even a Yoda movie where legitimate ideas at one point? Obi was included in those rumors as well. I wonder if they're still on the table and they're just waiting to see how Mando and Obi do on +? Also, so nice to see a rumor that the Internet didn't lie about. I've been so trained to assume that every rumor is a fake.

Not necessarily. That's something of a logical fallacy. One rumour being true doesn't make the other rumours true.

Having said that, I suspect whatever plans were had for a Boba Fett movie have morphed into what is now 'The Mandalorian' (I mean judging by the trailer 'The Madalorian' seems to be Boba Fett in everything but name).

Wasn't it only just announced a week or two ago that they were only 'recently' in talks with Ewen McGregor about reprising his role for the series? 'Recently' would suggest discussions have only just started, but the rumours of a movie have been around for quite some time. Maybe it's just coincidence it's now happening for TV, or maybe even Disney have listened to the rumour and made it true! Of course it could just be that those recent talks were about renegotiating his role from one-off movie to a full TV show.

...and I just read the Scott Ladewig Tweet:

"Obi Wan is back! Scripts are done, filming next year! Four years of dodging the question is over! Added to timeline!".

So I take my last comment back - I guess that's the confirmation that this series IS part of the same movie rumour.

So... just thinking... could be irrelevant but we had a (decent IMHO) Kenobi novel not long before the Disney acquisition that didn’t make the canon... and now we have a Kenobi series announced. From what I can remember there was really not a whole lot in that novel that would have been difficult to incorporate into the canon unless they wanted to cover the same time period for the character differently ...

We also had the (excellent IMHO) Darth Plagueis novel in a similar situation... hmmm.... just makes me wonder once again if there was purpose in the cut-off point for the ‘legends’/EU reset regarding Plagueis too...

Also, wondering if (...alright, hoping!) we will get some continuation of the stuff from Solo in this. It’s right in that era on the timeline ... Maul.... ? Qi’ra? Han/Chewie?! Jabba?

    *must calm down*

Maybe.. but I don't know. According to that timeline, it looks like the Obi Wan series takes place somewhere during the events of Solo, but the plot-strands of Solo seem to suggest more to pick up after those events. Solo itself has a three year 'time jump' in the story between Han leaving Correlia and meeting Becket, so my guess is that the Obi Wan series takes place roughly in that period. Although I suppose Maul could still feature in that case.

As for Han and Chewie making an appearance - I think it's already established and clear in A New Hope that Han and Chewie have never met Kenobi before their encounter in the Cantina.

That's the best Star Wars news since aaaa long time. A long time.

Ewan looks so happy here. He also wanted this to happen. You can clearly see this.

To be honest, I was never big on the idea of an Obi Wan movie (like, were the three prequel trilogy movies not already his story?!), so I don't know how I feel about him being the focus of a whole series.

It does feel, more than any other Star Wars so far, that it's driven more by actor 'star' status casting than by the character himself.

couldn't be more thrilled to see what the fall of the Republic and losing Anakin to the Dark Side did to him and his character.

Ewan McGregor was great as Obi-Wan, so I don't have a problem with that.

Han maybe yeah, I’m not so sure about Chewbacca though. Maybe Yoda told Obi-Wan (one way or another ;)) that Chewie would be a useful contact?! Maybe Chewie knows Obi-Wan already. Watch the Cantina scene again and imagine there’s been a scene before where Obi-Wan meets Chewie and tells him (mutual friend) Yoda had to go into hiding ... could work, no?

    (Sorry everyone for this rathole!)
At the very least we know that at this point in the timeline:

    - Obi Wan knows Yoda...
    -Yoda knows Chewbacca...
    - Chewbacca may or may not have met Han yet (depending exactly on the time - that timeline poster is a little fuzzy). It could be after Han has joined the Empire but before he and Chewie meet, for example, in that 3-year gap. We could even see Chewie get captured on an errand for Obi-Wan and/or Yoda, no?

Of course Obi-Wan doesn’t necessarily have to meet every character that will be in the show either... the possibilities are endless. :)

I guess the show could begin in the 3-year gap of Solo, but overlap and run off the end of Solo’s time-period.

I’m frying my brain slightly thinking too much now, if you don’t mind I’ll shut down for a while...(c-3po)

Does not work for me, besides isn't it more fun, if they meet in ANH for the first time!? Like ANH's story is about a bunch of people, who have never had met before, thrown together to go on an adventure...

I don't have a problem with him being back as Obi-Wan - and maybe having a star-led series can only be a good thing - although I've never agreed with most other fans that McGregor was 'great' as Obi-Wan. He always sounded a little like somebody putting on an English accent to me - I could 'see' him acting. Not that I don't think Ewan is a good actor - he's excellent in a lot of things - I just didn't think his performance in SW was one of the best (and in fairness it's probably more to do with the dialogue he had to deliver than his acting ability - but also having to do the accent as well possibly didn't help).

Having said that, I never especially disliked him in it either, and I've got no issue with him reprising his role - he IS Obi-Wan now, and I'm secretly hoping he makes a ghostly appearance in TROS! My reservations are really more about telling more stories about the character in a period of time where I like to think he was just lying low and biding his time as a crazy old hermit!

I certainly don't doubt Ewan McGregor's passion for Star Wars, and he's a welcome ambassador for the franchise - I don't think he has ever had anything 'bad' to say about the PT. He at least knows which side of his bread is buttered!

ETA: Despite my reservations, I am sure I will thoroughly enjoy an Obi-Wan TV series!

Sure, that’s fine too, it’s never bothered me for my whole life so far either. :)

But as it stands, in A New Hope, we’re saying Obi-Wan walks into the cantina and heads to the bar, and talks to an apparently random Wookiee who just happened to know Yoda... that was lucky, huh?! I guess the Force moves in mysterious ways! To me, that kinda make less sense and is more ‘small universe’ (in the way some complain about) than if there was a legit, logical explanation they could now retcon in, even though I have never thought about it until this very day... heheh I love Star Wars. :D

More fun if none of them had met before including Chewie? I dunno. I kinda like that Chewie could be sat there knowing more than Han knows about the situation.

But don’t mind me, everything I’m saying is pure speculation that probably won’t even happen, I know. :)

Pretty exciting news, I must say. I can remember that there was talk of a live-action Star Wars series for a loooong time, as far back as when I was still in high school at least, but it kept not happening. Until finally it is, and not only that, but now we're getting three live-action series. I feel quite blessed.

Of the three, this is the one I'm anticipating the most. I'd been hoping to see Ewan back in the role for some time. Even that aside, I am genuinely interested to see more of Obi-Wan's "hermit" life. I think it'll be a chance to explore a side to his character that hasn't been seen before.
