SPECULATION Obi-Wan Kenobi's Legacy in the Sequel Trilogy

I came across this fanmade video today and overcoming the fact that at first the music was way too "hip" for my taste and got some getting used to, the video is actually a pretty good edit of parallels between Kylo and Anakin + Vader and Rey and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

There are a few parallels which I had not thought about. Overall, the edit is pretty good and makes a rather strong case.

I want to keep my hopes moderate as to the possibility of Rey being a Kenobi, but if she was, and it turns out that that's the case, wow, now that we will be talking about for a very very long time to come, because the potential is enormous and the way it will tie up all movies of the saga will be something that has never ever been done...
Now that will truly be an epic saga.

Rey Kenobi or not, the video edit is fun to watch with how clever the scenes parallel and echo each other.
There is no doubt that the parallels between Kylo/Ben and Vader/Anakin are quite intentional, and not coincidental, the question is if the parallels between Obi-Wan and Rey are coincidental or not...

On a different note. The brand new teaser trailer has some interesting voiceover that I think deserves some speculating (or overthinking).



I find the two lines related to Obi-Wan particularly interesting and pertinent to this thread.

We see Leia with her back to the camera looking at a hologram map (very similarly to a scene in VII where she is looking at the piece of incomplete map with the location of the 1st Jedi Temple (where she thinks Luke is) AND we both hear a smidge of Rey's theme with the hardly distinguishable voice over of Leia saying "Help me Obi-Wan [Kenobi]". Curious. If I put my tinfoil hat on attuned to the Rey Kenobi frequency one may even think, ha, Rey's theme, Leia again asking a Kenobi for help in her most desperate hour.

Then immediately following we have Kylo's smashed helmet (in itself an image that may prove very symbolic and may I dare to hope very encouragingly hopeful) and we hear Obi-Wan's line from ANH where he talks how his student Darth Vader killed Anakin Skywalker. We here hear Vader's breathing and Kylo's theme.

We then hear Yoda who talks about the force and thus complete the callbacks to what has come before.

So, two of those interesting connections that directly call back to Obi-Wan are rather curious.
Obi-Wan is a crucial character in the SW saga. His importance and role in all previous 6 and the events that take place are undeniable as I have noted in the OP.

So bringing back Obi-Wan into our memory via Obi-Wan directly talking to Rey (directly calling her by name!) in VII and now these two references to him in the teaser trailer to me tease something. A direct involvement.

Also, Colin Trevorrow has again said in an interview more recently when asked about IX on which he is already in pre-production of that he sees IX not just as the ending part of this trilogy, but a part of all preceding trilogies, basically repeating exactly what he said a year ago. And that is very important IMO.

It seems to me that all those visual callbacks between Kylo/Ben with Vader/Anakin and Rey with Kenobi are too much on the nose to be just put there for mere nostalgia/familiarity effect or coincidental and are instead much more intentional and meaningful on a story level...

The plot thickens...

 

Soo, this little tidbit - excerpt from Obi-Wan's story in the recently published "From a Certain Point of View" anthology - came to my attention recently and as a staunch Rey Kenobi advocate I was quite amused by the very interesting implications:



Look who is itching a calendar of sorts decades later in her solitary desert dwelling:



Coincidence?! I think not.

 

I just don't think it was a coincidence and at this point, I'll be super surprised if Rey is not somehow a Kenobi. They are paralleling her to Obi-Wan too much for it to be a coincidence...
