Why do fans put too much emphasis on lightsabers? They're just weapons - nothing more and nothing less. They're not the embodiment of the Jedi Order or the Force. Nor should they be.

Chances are Obi-Wan's lightsaber was destroyed along with the first Death Star. I blame J.J. Abrams and Larry Kasdan for making such a big deal over Luke's first lightsaber in the first damn place.

I agree with you on that last part but with the first part...it's because lightsabers are just cool..

If it was destroyed on the death star, it's had a interesting journey, many baddies fell by it's blade.

Why not?! lightsabers are one of the coolest things from the star wars universe. I know when I first saw ANH all I wanted to do was have a lightsaber. Spent hours in the bookstore reading about them and theorizing with my friends about what would happen if you dropped a saber or what colour blade we would have and so on. They are a symbol of the Jedi throughout the galaxy. Anakin in TPM recognizes Qui- Gon's and immediately know's he's a Jedi. This is a kid on an outer rim planet that has only heard of these things through stories. Just by existing and being an exclusive weapon of the Jedi makes them more than just weapons.

and that wasn't just Luke's first lightsaber. That was Anakin's and saw battle during the most pivotal moments of the clone wars and the fall of the republic. And the kyber crystal that is housed within there is directly connected to the force. In fact, Kyber is also referred to as 'The living crystal'. Whether you like it or not, Lightsabers are a very important part of the mythos. JJ and Kasdan just realized this and decided to bring it more to the forefront in one of the major films.

They're symbols of aggression and violence, like all other weapons. There is a reason why Lucas had Luke tossed aside his lightsaber in "Return of the Jedi". But lightsabers as one of the "coolest things" in STAR WARS? That comment is disturbing to me on all counts.

don't get angry, Mr CTrent ;) by using the word "coolest" I assume @BobaSolo meant "fun", and I also assume he does not glorify the weapon, but mainly the concept of that object.
SW is full of quirks we love, there is a thread about that, here down in the Cantina.
One of the weirdest quirk is (without any doubt) when two rays of light chock when they meet, along with the ability to draw a 3 feet light beam of that brutally ends. This is physically "impossible".
That quirk also goes for blasters : in fact a "real" gun that would fire "laser beams" absolutely wouldn't behave like the blasters behave in the films - first of all because we wouldn't see any ray. We know that on our Earth, you know, that little laser pointers that make cats become totally crazy :D or that kind of beams which makes a bell ring when you enter a store.
That cannons and turrets that have a recoil when they shoot lightrays...

All of that in fact is funny, much more than thrilling. They are more toys than actual weapons. So yes lightsabers are "cool", not because they are weapons, but mainly because their existence is simply impossible. You know, "it's just a movie". :D

    Thank you @daRinze you're correct.
@CTrent29 By cool, I meant fun, and exciting. They captivated millions of fans imaginations purely from their absurdity and overpowering dominance on the battlefield. I stand by my comment as lightsabers being a cool weapon. Just like the Millenium Falcon is cool and Han's blaster is cool and Deckard's pistol in Blade Runner is cool, the samurai swords that the lightsaber is based on are cool, even the Death Star could be considered cool. Terrifying and destructive but still cool.

Yes, they are all destructive and take away life and that's not something that should ever be glorified. But as a Sci-Fi nerd and a filmmaker who has a heavy interest in props and on screen weapons, Lightsabers are cool. They are exciting, that hum when they turn on, the brilliance of their colours when in battle and how captivating they are on screen.

Just look at how exciting these battles are.

Some of the best moments in SW come from lightsaber battles. Vader being revealed as luke's father wouldn't carry nearly as much weight as it did after that epic battle. So yes, as with all weapons lightsabers are symbols of aggression and violence, but as with all other weapons, they can also be symbols of Hope.

My favorite lightsaber-wielding character is Obi-Wan. and as a Jedi master, he chose to specialize in the 3rd lightsaber form - Which emphasizes defense. He knows how much evil and devastation there is in the galaxy and he chooses to fight it the best he can with what is given to him.

Not everyone can be a Desmond Doss and run into battle without a weapon... ;)

You have it wrong. Like tossed his light saber after he nearly killed his dad. He saw Vader'a wiring and limbs and then looked at his hand and didn't want to become like him. He was scared that he would turn to the dark side and become more machine than man if he continued to use aggression and kill Vader and Palestine. In that moment, he became a true Jedi and threw his weapon to the ground in defiance because he didn't want to fight to kill his family IN THAT MOMENT, not because they're a symbol of aggression and violence as you said.

I KNOW that. It is the reason why I had mentioned the scene in the first place.

Interestingly, the original pre-visualisation of the TFA opening was all about the "legacy lightsaber". The editor once described the concept as “softer, confusing, but very cool.” I guess I can see how a director might want to hero a saber as an angle or Excalibur nod or something.

Darth Vader picked up and kept Kenobi's light saber.

how do i know this? it was still Anakin under that black suit... and he had just beaten his former master.
he wouldn't have kept it as a trophy to display.. he would have preserved it out of respect.

There was an 'honor' of sorts about Darth Vader. Sure he was hell bent on destroying the Jedi, but he fully respected the force. (from his point of view)

Just my opinion, and i think it could be a tad 'cheesy' to come across another old iconic light saber in the same trilogy.. but i like to think that Vader would have honored his old master and kept the saber safe.

I actually think the Emperor would have asked him for it, and destroyed it right in front of Vader.

Somebody write that into a comic! (emperor)

I'm sure Vader had a trophy wall, and hung it up there. Remember Vader helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi....
