excluding the whole Finn FS stuff (which i know is a touchy subject for many, so i won't go there lol), the large majority of the audience that saw TFA could be a bit underwhelmed if he fights with a bit of a naff weapon in the next 2 films.. after seeing him with the saber.

he needs a kick-ass cool melee weapon in my opinion :)

This is how I feel too. Though I am one of the people that wants him to be FS (but just FS, I don’t want him to become a Jedi or train for one. At least not in this trilogy) I want to see him with a badass melee weapon that complements his Force sensitively, if he does end up being FS. Now as awesome as it would be if he had a saber and fought with that, I’m not expecting that and would be happy with just something cool and different and not lame like a stormtrooper baton.

Force sensitivity aside....has anyone read Star Wars issue 34? I really wouldn't mind if Finn turns out to be the son of Lando and Sana...they have a fun chemistry when working together.

Huh, that would be kind of cool! It'd make Finn Kylo's half brother, which I think most people haven't really considered yet.

He would not be related to Kylo at all. None of those people are Kylo's parents.

As someone who would like for him to be a Jedi/FS, I honestly think it was a mistake putting the LS in his hands at all until they were ready to reveal that pathway for him. Because it's caused unnecessary churn that can only end positively is if he DOES become FS. If they never hint at it, and Finn goes the Jedi arc we would ALL be surprised. Now if he becomes FS, there'll be one group who'll be happy about it, and another group who'll be angry. Not sure if the internet chatter was worth all the intense feelings that "soon come crashing down". I'm all for the arc, not for the drama.

Rian Johnson on Finn in TLJ-
"We were on the same page." Johnson revealed. "We wanted this to be the movie where his character strengthens — not just by becoming a better-drawn character — but by literally finding his strength and discovering what he believes in."

From what we know already, we know that Finn believes in the force, and from what I see he will be discovering how to use it. Unless anyone has a better option for what he will *discover what he believes in*

Sounds like Finn will learn the force in this movie to me

Ehh, I think it far more likely that this pertains to Finn believing in the cause of the Resistance and fighting against the FO rather than going to live a quiet life far away from the conflict.

I don't want it to be that but everything we've heard about Finn in TLJ points towards the main theme of his story being finding his resolve to help the Resistance and become the "hero" they think he is. Pretty standard story but I'm not expecting any particular innovation on Finn's story front.

It's not like Star Wars has ever been particularly innovative in its story department.

It hasn't done too badly. The Darth Vader reveal in the OT and the PT following the fall of Anakin Skywalker to name a few.

It's not Fight Club or The Usual Suspects but it's not too bad.

I mean we're all looking for the twist or dramatic reveal of TLJ and I'm just saying I don't expect it to occur in Finn's arc. The climax/highlight of his story in TLJ is likely his confrontation with Phasma, for better or worse.

I don't think @Pawek_13 meant that as a dig. SW is a mash of stories, tropes, genres repackaged into something new. But even in its innovation it retells some rather ancient stories.

It's incredibly influenced from old Buck Rodgers and Flash Gordon. This is most obvious in the designs of prequel films.
And as you say, it's not a dig. At some point most genre films like this start from some basic story and are heavily influenced by older stories.

I don't want to get too off topic but TESB was a TOTAL knock off of Buck Rodgers Conquerors The Universe.

Sit down and actually watch it. I'm telling you, it's true. Buck Rodgers foils another one of Emperor Ming's plans. So Ming orders a bounty on his head. Rodgers evades Ming"s fleet, and escapes to a frozen planet/land. Ming's men send robotic soldiers called walking bombs to kill Rodgers. But ming doesnt want them dead, he wants them alive. Because, he wants the Dr. For his "abilities". Its goes on, but I don't have time right now. TESB wasn't all that original. BR Universe was made in 1940.

If family was involved they would've been kept close to Leia in TFA.

If he's the one that crashes it into the ground from the first teaser, I'm going to need one of you guys to give me a lobotomy.

Even if he struggles at first, so what? Did you see this picture? Does Finn really seem like he's not able to control a Ski Hopper? We know that he's a fast learner, so why can't he be able to improve his piloting skills in a get-go?
