got to say the baton blow finn gave phasma at the end of the fight was almost a killer, phasma's armor was immune to blaster shots

I agree. I almost half expected him to betray them.

So spell it out for us - why do YOU think they’re doing this?

Because you accused me of bringing race into it but you’re the one implying the racism with these statements and missing what the actual story is that they’re telling.

I love this hug so much : Rey goes in the deepest and darkest places in this film and man she deserves to get some comfort.

Regarding her last look, I did not interpret it as jealousy but I don't remember it very well. The way I took it on the moment is the fact that she sees Finn being in the same situation she was at the end of TFA with him and it brings back memories. To be honest I don't think jealousy would fit with her state of mind at the end of the movie : she is composed, calm, not afraid anymore, we see this when she closes the door of the falcon to Kylo. In other words the ideal Jedi state-of-mind : wouldn't jealousy be out of place ?

I am honestly surprised at some of the gushing reviews about Finn. The strengthening of Finn as a character that Rian promised was non-existent (I don't even know how it could be argued otherwise). His fight with Phasma (which I just knew would be off the charts visually) was underwhelming to the point of parody.

He is again used as a plot device to provide the Resistance with intel (he apparently has an inexhaustible supply of operational knowledge of all things First Order based on his time as a janitor). But of course all movies need plot devices; that is no sin. It would just be nice if plot device didn't seem to encompass Finn's entire existence. Oh wait, Finn also shows bravery and courage at the end of the movie in an unwinnable battle facing certain death. Good thing he didn't do that in TFA already otherwise we might feel like we didn't get any development.

Those of you wanting Jedi Finn, please disabuse yourself of this notion, you are not even getting Jace Malcolm Finn. You won't be able to say you were misled by marketing this time. He was reduced in the marketing because he was reduced, in every way that mattered, in the film. If it's any consolation to you, Rian executes an equally ridiculous (and baffling) handling of Snoke, Luke, and Rey.

He doesn't fire a blaster, not even once. Finn fans and detractors alike seemed to believe that blasters were his thing. Much of the story and trajectory was wrong on this board (for good and for bad). For example, in interviews we hear of Finn going on a mission, which seems really lazy and pedestrian in terms of writing. The actual genesis for his mission evolves very well organically. Even if you're not thrilled with him *quote-fingers* going on a mission, the events by which he comes to go on the mission make far more sense than what was speculated.

His fight with Phasma? 360 degrees of disappointing. I was genuinely surprised because I was confident this would be one instance in which John would be deliberately elevated to shine; we heard about how the role was physically demanding and how he had been in training. In retrospect there were several comments that Rian Johnson made about Finn (and other characters) and suggestions about the characters in general that just do not bear any resemblance to the product put on the silver screen.

Characters who got sensible and likeable archs were Rose, Hux, Holdo, and DJ. The rest are likely to leave a bad taste in your mouth (Finn and Luke more than others)

Hux made me think about the captain Harris from police academy. in fact the FO made me think about FO academy lol. Hux was even badly handling than Finn to me, a lot more worse. A villain cliché who is used as a ridiculous tool.

There was no other way to play Hux than to make him a joke. And there is an important message in that too.

Wow, the movie is trending and the fans are arguing at each other. I expect a twitter story to be made from it.

It's also astounding how a critic can do a spoilery review of TLJ and not mention Finn, Rose, or Poe at all, it just let's you know Rian really "othered" them by putting them in uninteresting side plots.

Well in IX Finn the traitor will out-trait DJ the traitor this time.
This is true. He kind of brings it on himself because of his snotty and snarky attitude.

Question. In tlj visual dictionary it says rose comes from a planet where the fo abducts children for their child soldier program. Do finn and rose ever discuss this in the movie?

Another thing: I thought Boyega said there was some exploration of Finn's origins in the film. It wasn't something that he made sound like would be in depth but that it would be there. I don't remember seeing or hearing anything on that in the actual movie. Maybe a casualty of editing.

One thing I know I won't entertain ever again, is the notion that Finn fans are unique or any more intense or intransigent in their shipping.

The movie spelled out in NO uncertain terms Rey's parentage and people are still theorizing how maybe it's not true.
