    hahaha ~ thanks!

and i apologize, there seems to be a lot of miscommunication (and sometimes downright snark) around this subject, so i'd rather clarify than assume.

Except that NO ONE is saying that. Saying that they liked him in TFA isn't the same as saying that he NEVER needs to grow and progress. Of course he should, and people freely acknowledge that.

The debate, such as it is, ultimately comes down to this. Do you think that the only kind of "growth" that is worthwhile for him is for him to turn out to be FS and/or become a Jedi, or do you think that they can do it another way and still make it cool?

you're right, there were many other moments and characters that had their comedic moments. As a lead, not once in any official trailers (minus the TV spots) are we showed Finn in any type of screen emotion other than exasperated, scared, and brave. It was certainly very impactive to see him with probably the best comedic lines in the whole movie other than bb8's thumbs up and he was a big part of that scene. Think of the movie and which parts got the most laughs from the audience..With Phasma, with Rey, with Han etc.. He was part of almost every scene that needed to be, in the words of Abrams and Kasdan, "delightful".
I will stand by my point that he was for all intent and purposes for his screen time, comic relief. I will also add that I believe his character will change into a more serious one (due to what will play out) but that he still will have some moments in this darker film that will be VIII.

    Getting caught up

Couple things. It is ok if they make fin FS it is ok if they don't. The character will be great either way. It just depends on the type of story you want to see from him. The misdirection known as "operation redherring" has never been admitted to by the powers that be.It has been public assumption. The other thing i noticed from the books. the resistance is tiny very very tiny. it was just that base and those fighters. Now with the attack against the hosnian system its possible we won't see a resistance in Ep VIII but the full might of the remaining republic forces instead. If thats the case how does that effect your view on the others? I don't think any of them would carry over rank but leia, ackbar and a few others.

The questions over his FS and where he stands compared to rey will persist till the trilogy ends and it is very clear to the masses what is what and who stand where. This thread so far is doing quite well compared to the direction the other one took. A lot of people are posting some great ideas on both sides of that debate about the direction of the character. You are very much in the stormtrooper revolt camp which is a cool idea. It could play out a lot of ways even leading to his group having a separate fleet from the republics. Which could lead to a Two towers Calvary at helms deep moment. A betrayal by someone close to him could really effect his dynamic with the world.
Nope he could do that with normals all day but some struggle to see him doing that to the knights of ren ,which is also who they see as the main bad guys. Many of those people also don't realize how much of the new canon give jedi like powers to normal people and makes jedi less invincible. I will make a Fs vs Non-Fs Combat battle post soon where we can get into the grit of it but i wanna make sure its done right (promise it will be well thought out and change peoples view of combat in star wars can't post it till I have some extra time this weekend)

A street urchin on nar shaddaa would have been great! It may have mirrored rebels a bit but that still would have been interesting
That was long lol ,Love the Break down. Zeros has so much potential i will be disappointed if the writers don't make him a big deal for Finn. During the speeder chase in the novel he was conflicted with thoughts of his unit when he had to shoot back. I like the light in the darkness idea, though it would make sense to have his downer moment more about emotional loss than a real defeat. I only say 40% cause Poe is supposed to get more screen time this movie :)

I think the everyman idea is the audience surrogate. The person that does what we would do or think we would do in that situation. where Rey or the "jason bourne" of the story does what we dream of doing. In a movie like Crank or Bourne the superstars take center stage in narrative driven stories the everyman usually ends up being the true hero.

I have actually run into a good number of people that want ep8 to be about just rey and luke. If finn is there it should be minimal and just to lighten up the movie or to help poe do X for luke and rey. I don't know their motivations for it but most of those people will say "he was funny ,but i don't think he added much to the movie"

FS or Non-FS effects all of the other questions. As long as we state our idea is about what its a non issue. Like the questions you asked. If he is FS then where he comes from could matter more to luke and rey than it does if he isnt. How he and rey work out is also effected. I asked the question if he will be FS in ep8 so we can get ideas of how people want his story to play out and from what side of the fence.

    • will Finn return to his place of origins?
Depends on if it matters to the trilogy. If his back ground is of a nobody then no he wont
    • what does the drafting of stormtroopers tell us about Finn's backstory and people
Tells us the first order was conceived with ideology than the empire. Maybe they see the training as a way to find and cultivate great skill vs keep the status quo
    • what would this tell us about his arc in 8 and 9.
If that is the case then you have the potential for others in the corp to follow in finns footsteps if given the option
    • How will the relation between Finn and Rey work out?
This will be all on the writers. Do they have a romance? Does the seperation lead them down different paths? Are they both Solo's? a few ways they could take it all depends on what makes the most sense to the story.
    • Will Finn ever return to the First Order?
No way! well maybe. If he sees the republic is no better or worse.
    • What are Finn's motives and personal conflicts.
      good question

Jedi is the easy route, Non-Fs is the middle ground were FS non-jedi is the coolest. You can definitely go a different direction than jedi and still be cool. You can go full Non-FS and still be cool. Its just a very different type of story, with very different enemies in most cases but not all.

Ah, I see regarding the 40%.

By the way, have you read all of the new canon material? I'm curious due to your proposal regarding a FS vs non-FS combat topic based on the new canon, etc.

From what I see it can still sort of appear that certain FS people, in particular, are far more of a match for non-FS in the new canon. Non-FS may put up a good fight, but usually, still get soundly defeated. Just my observations, anyway, curious to see what you put together on this.

I have read all the comics , im working through the books. If you exclude Vader (he seems to be over the top strong in the force compared to pretty much everyone else) then its an interesting comparison.

People have said it whether you've personally read those posts or not.

Most rational people know main characters have growth over the course of a movie and/or saga. I was speaking to those who clearly see no use for Finn aside from being a source of comic relief or as a sacrificial device for the other lead. At this point I believe I've been very clear in the distinction. Those that continue to read more into what I've said clearly show a level of defensiveness that is unwarranted.

If they decide to go the Finn FS route, so be it. I'm hoping they will shock and awe us with a storyline worthy of that decision. As for TPTB's 'red herring', it's occam's razor. Just way too obvious, especially now in hindsight. Anyways, that decision ended up biting them in the ass, as the whole toy 'Reygate' came to the front line quick. All in the name of protecting a secret which wasn't that much of a secret before the movie began.

As for my view on the outcome of the Hosnian strike, we'll see how much the First Order still has left hiding in the outer rim's and what 'might' they can still conjure up. I trust in Snoke's 'supposedly' wise tactician ways. The rebels / resistance will have no choice but to gather all effectives after Starkiller because like it or not, war is now full speed ahead.

    Addition to my post here:

I was thinking about Ezra's message from Star Wars: Rebels, which was heard by other rebel cells and people across the Empire giving them hope.

I can imagine Finn sending similar message to stormtroopers of the First Order, giving them another option besides FO. As they are brainwashed from childhood, it's hard to imagine that many of them will manage to break the conditioning, for most he will still be the traitor, but there will be some. I can see Finn helping them escape and regaining their lives. It will be a kind of psychological warfare that will damage morale of First Order troops. When one person defects - it is a fluke; if several do - it is a pattern. Bonus points: It will drive Hux crazy. :D

Just another possibility for Finn. I will write more if and when something else comes to mind.

To the people who like the idea of Finn leading a rebellion, have you read this? It's kind of long, but well worth the read. It's unlikely to happen, but I really like it in theory. What are your thoughts?

Didn't dig it then, still don't dig it now
People come up with the best ways to have finn not be substantial to the main plot.
Introducing other cool characters that he can tag along with and watch is just another way.

I don't know why Finn would leave the Resistance. Everyone he cares about is connected to it in some way and he hates the First Order so he would want to contribute to bring them down.

John Boyega's lightsaber training pictures for Episode VIII show him wearing something that looks like a kilt or a skirt. Does that suggest he might be wearing Jedi apprentice clothes on Episode VIII ?

    Guys look,

Finn is not the comic relief of the movie as some might like to believe, he has elements of being a comic relief but he really isn't. Finn is basically the underdog of this movie, it is not Rey who pretty much kicks ass in everything right from the get go she is just the lead character.

-Finn is a mediocre stormtrooper, in fact he is the janitor
    - acts clumsy
    - he doesn't know how fly a Tie-Fighter
    - he doesn't know how to use laser cannons inside of vehicles
    - he chickens out in the cantina scene and wants to leave (even though that scene was within the heroe's journey structure and actually a Rey scene)
    - he has absolutely no confidence

He is an underdog character, appearing incompetent amongst the others which makes you end up rooting for him and is basically the goal of how the character is written. Kasdan and co. wanted YOU the audience to root for the underdog (can easily be seen when he has the balls fighting Kylo Ren, which was not only his character arch in TFA but also Rey's at the same time).

If they are not totally incompetent (which ... Disney is on oh so many levels so lets just hope here) they add depth and overcoming the underdog attributes step by step! Maybe even waiting until the third movie. Him leading the rebellion or restistance, or what ever the f*ck they call it now, or him becoming a force sensetive ex-stormtrooper lightsaber wielding padawan hybrid-something would compelely ruin the actual purpose of his character. He is almost a character from another universe and not the Star Wars universe which is what makes him a character you could do alot with! But creating a clusterf*ck of intertwined, ever and oh so boring ever repeating patterns of "use force, be hero", plots and twists between force and none force and blah would not only make him compete with the Rey character and her dynamic with Luke, but would also turn the entire damn movie into a masturbation fest of fanservice not allowing any of the characters to actually push Star Wars forwards and having it be the pale and kind of "safe haven filmmaking" loveless product under Disney which it turned out to be under TFA in some aspects.

I hope Luke senses the Force in Finn and recommends he be trained. Rey may have the natural Skywalker gift, but for others who are older, they may need a lot more training to bring out their potential. It's like some kids that are gifted at piano and can simply play, while others need countless hours and years of practice before they are proficient.

Without Finn becoming a Jedi, his story was pretty much completed in TFA. Very much like Lando. Lando turned in Han and Leia to the Empire, but by the end he was a trusted member of the Rebellion. He didn't really have a story in ROTJ. He was a player, but didn't really have a story. I want more for Finn. Especially since he isn't a pilot and can't help Poe so he needs a place. I think that's why they left it open ended with his character. If he was a hit with fans, he'd become a Jedi.

A REAL rematch with Rey and Finn vs. a more powerful Kylo Ren would be awesome.

It would be cool to see a somewhat clumsy and afraid stormtrooper become a strong and powerful member of the Resistance. It makes for a strong arc.

Also, if Rey turns to the dark side, there could potentially be a very emotional fight between her and Finn in IX. Similar to the two fights between Anakin and Obi-Wan.
