From all your posts, I take it you'd would have liked it if Finn left at the beginning of TLJ, never to be seen again.

Since the story is about the Resistance vs the FO, and you didn't want Finn to have anything to do with that.

And since Rey already agreed to locate Luke for the Resistance, then you don't want Finn to have anything to do with Rey either.

When he was taken off the "Force" playing field, many of us wondered how he would be relevant (and btw, in the aftermath of TLJ, that question still remains). Many of thought about it, and questioned whether going forward this HAD to be the same old binary, Republic/Resistance/Rebellion vs Empire/F.O. Then we all questioned whether escaping from the FO reflexively put Finn in the tank for the Resistance. I think that's how the Storm Trooper rebellion idea gained momentum and so:

    a) Many of us were not concerned with having Finn pair with Rey (especially since it became clear he would he would only serve Rey's character development)
    b) Many of us wanted to see the leadership and elite soldier skills the supplemental materials suggested put on display in a way meaningful for Finn & the story
    c) Many of us wanted Finn to CHOOSE his own path and not have it characterized as cowardice or poodoo if it didn't align him to the Resistance

Obviously Rian wasn't interested in any of that (or advancing the character terribly far) so what you all call Rose opening his eyes, many of us see as sermonizing and preaching. If these things that Rose was saying was true, could we really not have Finn realize them on his own? Does he really need a surrogate moral compass? This is one thing I liked about TFA that I hated about TLJ. In TFA, Rey tries to sway Finn to do what "she thinks is right" and in the end, he does not choose her path. He makes his OWN choice. He demonstrates agency based on what he knows. Despite Rey's pleas, he decides to go to the outer rim. But when Rey is captured, no one has to convince him to go to SKB, he again, makes his OWN choice. No one had to tell him not to fire on the unarmed villagers on Jakku... he makes his OWN choice. He is perfectly capable and fine of making the right moral call. Instead here in TLJ we assume he has to be "schooled". It makes no sense to me.

    "I'm just here for Rey."

As soon as Finn told Han that on Starkiller base, his TLJ arc was sealed, unfortunately.

Because Rian saw that part and focused on expanding Finn's simple motivations in TLJ.

Unlike Rey, who had time for offscreen contemplation at the end of TFA (between arriving at D-Qar and accepting Leia's mission to retrieve Luke).

Finn was put into a coma and didn't wake up until TLJ, immediately thrown into the space chase. So rather than having offscreen progression, Finn had to be given another movie, to align his motivation with the rest of the good guys.

I'm with you. I hate that. Because it's Finn playing catch up. It's why I hate Finn saying that line to Han and why I hate the coma, in TFA. It stunted Finn's growth compared to everyone else.

I am, at least, thankful Rian didn't give him another serious injury and and he did put Rey, Poe and him in the same place at the end of TLJ, when he really didn't have to.

I was hoping since we're rebooting the franchise and rebooting how the Force is used/acts, rebooting who the leads are, that maybe we could also take the time to examine if who we have reflexively called the good guys, really are the good guys. Luke at least considered the idea for the Jedi (and the idea was at least touched upon in the PT).

Why can't we have a 3rd party faction that doesn't align to the Resistance or the F.O.? That sees valid points in both groups, but also disagrees with both groups? These are hypothetical questions at this point now mind you, TLJ already set the canon that instead of doing something interesting, decided the cog that once operated in the machine of the FO will now operate in the machine of the Resistance/Rebellion. Honestly, the remix of Luke Skywalker pretty much guaranteed that I could never be a fan of TLJ, but if they had pursued this route with Finn I would hate TLJ a lot less and be more apt to give RJ the benefit of the doubt in his sincerity to create a meaningful development (even if it was poorly executed and he wasn't able to pull it off).

I know I'm in the minority in this but whatever they chose for Finn in EPIX (for me) will feel like it comes out of thin with no foundation or foreshadowing; it will all feel artificial. At least Rey has the Jedi books, even if we don't get to see her train (which is a shame) we know her pathway has been set and developed. Finn gets no such luxury.

I think the best way to end this is just have everyone dead at the beginning of Episode IX except Rey and Kylo. I know I don't want to sit through a two hour movie where every character besides those two have no purpose except to support them. I wanted more from my movie than just hearing about those two, but it seems those are the only two characters most media outlets want to talk about in a serious manner. Porgs get more love from the media than the other characters.

Finn is just there. Hux is just there. Rose shouldn't in the film.

How much of TLJ do you think will be leveraged for EPIX? It's hard to imagine that there will be much more subversion since there wasn't a whole lot set up for any of the characters (especially Finn). I doubt JJ goes out on a limb, I think we're going to get a very "safe" EPIX (and to be fair, Episode 9 is where the trilogy should wrap up, not where a gotcha or a mystery box is introduced... but then again, there is no question waiting to be resolved in EPIX either so... who knows.)

This is such a superb question it deserves its own thread.

That said, I wager one of the first few things Episode IX is "undo" what we think happens in Episode XIII.

    To me that means:

The opening scroll makes it clear Luke is still alive and fighting the First Order throughout the galaxy in honor of his fallen sister.

Episode IX - The Balance of the Force

    Luke Skywalker is alive.

The great hero who defeated the First Order has been seen throughout the Galaxy liberating the Outer Rim from the influence of Ben Solo's regime.

Ben Solo, desperate to find and kill Luke before he sparks a revolution of hope across the galaxy has solicited the best bounty hunters in the galaxy to find and kill both Rey and Luke once and for all...

Okay, so I can't write, but in terms of a "Piffer for tat" methodology, JJ will undo much of what TLJ delivered in the very opening scroll.

It would really be wild if the Crawl was the part of the movie with the "unexpected twist". That would be interesting. I do think they'd have to spend some time explaining why it was possible (and maybe Yoda commanding lightning in the real world sets the precedent for it), that might encounter a serious "head wind" with critics if the explanation is not rooted in more than just one movie. Most hard core fans would probably accept it face value. I wouldn't mind the twist but I would want to see someone but some brain power into existing Star Wars lore to tie it together. I hated the "Darkness rises and light to meet it" non-explanation of Rey's powers. A similar simple explanation probably wouldn't work for me for Luke being back either.

This was mentioned over on the Episode XI Rose thread so I thought I'd bring it here where it belongs. This is regards to Rose saving Finn at the end of the film. There appears to be some confusion about the cannon.
Poe says the cannon is charged and it was too late to blow it up. Poe calls off the attack and Finn keeps going. The cannon would simply vaporize Finn's skimmer. Finn was on a path to suicide before Rose saves him.

This subject would probably be more adequate in Poe's topic. If anything, TLJ proved Poe is a bad commander. He keeps making bad calls one after the other. What does he know ? (or are you suggesting Poe was allowed to read the script in advance, but not Finn ?) Finn knows more than him about the cannon.

And since Finn was about 20 meters away when he got knocked off-course, this clearly suggests he would have at least made it into the cannon.

More importantly : what's the alternative at that moment ? The Resistance is completely trapped, BB-8's scans clearly stated there was no way out of the base. They were minutes away from destruction.
That's basic "Fight or Flight" : if you have nowhere to run, then you HAVE to fight, even with bad odds.
Poe's order was once again a bad call. Based on the information he had, it would only give his pilots a few more minutes to live ... but they would still die very shortly, along with the entire Resistance.

    Was Finn's attempt a longshot ? Yes.
Was it better than doing nothing and pray for a miracle to arive within minutes ? Absolutely !

And it took not one, but two different "Deus ex Machina" to save the Resistance after that fiasco : the apparition of Luke and the magical apparition of a new exit.

PS : Rose's "plan" is even more comically stupid, as it also required :
_ surviving a high-speed crash in some very unsafe vehicles
_ not getting shot by the FO afterwards
_ outrunning FO walkers for easily 5 or 6 kilometers
But since she is the "author's pet", those technicalities are quickly brushed aside...

I appreciate the post... it could probably work as a thread. I'm just sticking to the narrative. In the film, the cannon cannot be blown up and Finn's simply going to get burned up by the beam. Poe learns his lesson. They could have fought to the death right then and there or try to regroup. Poe realizes the mission has failed. Works for me.

    Poe's plan was sound.

They originally had no choice but to engage the walkers until they got any answer from allies hearing the communications call.

Then Poe and Finn see the Falcon on Crait.

Then the Canon charged up, so Poe made the order for retreat.
It was the wise decision. (He learn his lesson from Leia, that he needs to think more like a leader and less like a "hero.")

Finn on the other hand, is holding on to his anger against the FO. And letting it cloud his judgement, from listening to Poe's orders.

Just like Poe refused to listen to Leia's orders at the beginning of the film. They were clear parallels.

    This is why Rose intervened.

I'm not sure why you draw this conclusion... especially since Finn has thus far been used as the uncontested Subject Matter Expert on all things FO. Why would we be listening to Poe about the cannon being charged and it being too late to blow it up when 2 minutes earlier he didn't even know what it was? I think what feels more intuitive is believing that the cannon could be blown up because Finn hasn't given up and HE knows FO tech.

Also, I don't know if you all have watched this scene repeatedly, but there are 2 things worth noting

    1. Finn pulls up his stabilizing strut when he defies Poe's order... so he is literally flying now
    2. He is flying IN the pre-beam of the cannon and the ship is largely in tact after he pulls up the stabilizing strut

However I will say it wasn't a suicide run until his guns melted. And I don't think it was hatred that was driving Finn to try to take out the cannon anymore than it was hatred that drove Finn to take on Kylo, it was courage and resolve to save someone else. It's part of why I believe he closed his eyes and (according to some posters) the music that plays indicates that he is thinking about Rey on his final run to the cannon.

Because that's what the movie implies. I don't really have an opinion on the fictional beam and whether or not Poe would recognize if the fictional beam could be blown up. Finn was getting vaporized before Rose stopped him.

Disagree that it's implied in the movie. Finn is the Subject Matter Expert. He keeps going. Poe, who is not the Subject Matter Expert and who didn't even know what the item was until Finn educated him, says turn back. I'll trust Finn's knowledge. He was right about the TIE fighters sensors, right about the ST helmet's filters, right about the location of the Thermal Oscillator, right about the function of the cannon. If he decided it wasn't too late to turn around, I'm good with that. Plus, if you look a the scene, he initially loses his guns, and keeps flying in the beam. Actually the order is he loses his guns, he pulls up his stabilizing strut, ascends FULLY into the beam, and flies unabated towards the canon until Rose hits him. Not my opinion, but the actual film.

p.s. Finn's ship holds together awfully well when struck by Rose's skimmer, for a ship that was "being vaporized" a moment before.
