Snap may be back in a cameo-ish role, only because Greg is best friends with JJ. But the actress who played Jess, has bigger roles and oppurtunites now then to come back a play a small role like Jess Pava.

If Carrie didn't die, I could see they might kill off Poe. But with her gone, I severely doubt they kill him off or Connix for that matter.

I think this may be true for casual fans. But infiltration has been a part of SW for awhile, since the OT really. I think for me, it falls apart not because it ultimately ends in failure but because it wasn't just done in R1, but it was done in TFA. It largely has Finn repeating elements of TFA IMO.

It's also due to the fact that the inclusion of DJ is annoying and in some respects, absolutely bizarre.

Another valid point. I'm not sure what went wrong. Benecio Del Toro is usually a can't miss addition to any cast.

An interesting video about what happens when you have a lack of diversity in the writing room.

Lol! I'm just trying to show what Rian Johnson wrote for Finn and Rose was the typical story for people of color when it comes to white writers. If they want all people to continue to support these movies then the writing needs to become a little more sophisticated. Trying to fit everyone into one cute little box is more wishful than realistic.

I think this was more of a problem in TFA than TLJ. To me, Finn and Rose don't seem to embody many stereotypes in TLJ. They are however supremely irrelevant (so I guess that dovetails with what part of the video spoke of).

I'm still completely flummoxed at how irrelevant Phasma was. When I saw that first TFA trailer with her in it, I was so stoked. Like, finally we are going to see Storm Troopers who are formidable. I was thinking it was going to be an elite squad of ST that wore chrome that deflected blaster rounds and she would be the leader. And she was basically nothing. Like it is hard for me to articulate just how much I feel they wasted Finn and her character. So much potential just left on the shelf jeez

One thing Rian did get right with Finn was the character DJ. He knew Finn shouldn't automatically trust the Resistance, because he doesn't know them. However, exploring Finn would have taken away from Kylo and Rey, but so what. The Kylo and Rey connection took away from Luke and Finn. Instead of people constantly worried about who's playing the lead, and then catering to it. It should have been how can we tell the best overall story.

I felt there was so much they could have explored with the storm troopers, but it seems Rian's job was to minimize all of that into one neat little package. The problem is none of the characters have an actual personality. What does Finn really want? What does Rey want? We know what Rose wants, and Poe wants the same, but where is the nuance? Except for skill set they are all the same which makes for boring characters. If I want what you want then I don't want anything, so therefore I don't matter.

But the thing is, it doesn't have to. You can tell a great story with a character like Finn. If you take the time to put care into it, you can make any character arch work. The main thing is you have to add a lot of emotional depth and weight to it. It doesn't even have to take the lion's share of the time. Quality over quantity as the saying goes.
Let's be honest, there's no emotional depth to the Kylo/Rey story. Speaking for myself, I don't feel any sympathy for either of them. Finn's story is/was ripe for exploiting that angle to great effect. The problem is that Lucasfilm seems to be afraid of any other characters taking any attention away from Kylo and Rey so they inorganically popularize them by putting all the attention on them. Instead of letting the fan-favorite organically show itself based on the opinions of the audience, like Han Solo did in the OT, they're trying to make the fan-favorite who they want it to be.

I thought the Angel and Devil sitting on your shoulder paradigm could have worked if Finn self-interrogated based on their input instead of seemingly just accepting the input (from Rose) as fact. We establish that he has an ethical framework in TFA. We know, not only did he not have a place in the FO, we know the expiration for his time hiding among their ranks occurs in TFA. He knew it too, he knew he couldn't be in another skirmish and not fire when ordered to; he had to leave. He has thoughts, he has beliefs. THOSE should have driven his choice to be Resistance (even if Rose and DJ and others for that matter influenced them).

It's weird, Kylo gets an Angel and a Devil (Snoke and Rey) and Finn gets an Angel and a Devil (Rose and DJ) but Rey doesn't... unless you consider Grumpy Luke the Angel and the Dark Side the Devil, or Luke is both Devil and Angel (but both of those feel like a stretch).

I think the characters do have personalities, but they aren't put in positions to amplify them (well at least Finn and Rey weren't). If there is another ST (a SST if you will) maybe they'll do a better job. They have wasted a lot of bandwidth not advancing main protagonists in a way you expect or at least appreciate. It's like they were only certain that they wanted Kylo to be the main villain going into EPIX. Finn's place seems unclear and Rey continues to be a paradox, she doesn't need training to be a Jedi, but we're to understand she took the text to learn to become a Jedi? 2/3rds of the way in, this makes no sense.

    Poe's and Rey's shoulder angels/devils are different.

Poe's are the straight forward Leia and the confrontational Holdo. Though it turns out they both want the same thing.
Kylo and Luke are Rey's but how would you define them?

There is nothing special about the Kylo/Rey story except for what some want to put into it, and none of it has to do with telling a great story. They got so caught up into the survival of a character's bloodline that they forgot about that part.

It would have been cool if Maz was more involved in his situation like having her introduce DJ to Finn instead of the Canto Bight story. Let him hang out with him since he was neutral in the fight. This would have shown wisdom and patience on Maz's part. She understands asking him to give his life to their cause after what he's gone through might be too selfish to expect. It could have been the opportunity for Finn's character to breathe. Finn's character was never given the opportunity to express how he felt about anything, but we got to hear plenty of Rose's feelings. Finn hanging out with DJ could have really opened up the Star Wars universe. It would have been a perspective that we didn't hear before.

The first time I saw TFA I thought this could be a six part story. If they were willing to explore the characters. Lucas films had no idea what they had.

I have some ideas going forward, but after TLJ I can understand why there may not be one yet.

I just realized Finn woke up from his coma, and went on a kamikaze run to save people he barely knows in less than 24 hours. WTH? I highly doubt anyone would do that.

I just realized that if his arch was about making the choice to join the Resistance, then it was essentially already over when he decided to go to Canto Bight. Think about it, he went with barely a hint of resistance (no pun intended) and then when he got there he made no attempt to ditch Rose and go on about his own business. Then when he met DJ it's like he didn't even think twice about not joining simply because Rose showed him some stuff. Where was the big internal struggle? But this is what's supposed to pass for an arch in Star Wars these days.

Isn't that because he didn't want Rey to come back to a doomed fleet.

It was either protect Rey or protect the Resistance. What a joke. No human being thinks this way. Finn was written from the perspective of fantasy rather than reality. Certainly not Finn's reality.

I don't know how many of you saw Solo yet but there is a planet there with a visible amount of black people (Saverine I think). What are the odds that Finn has some lineage/origins from here

It's a nowhere planet, known only for it's Brandy, but it's also where the Rebellion ostensibly begins it's actual growth. Would it be ironic for Finn's origins/lineage to have been from a planet that made the original Rebellion possible?
