Rey and Finn are the two main characters of this trilogy, no matter what Rian Johnson tried to attempt in "The Last Jedi". Trying to shove the black guy to a supporting role already?

I keep hearing people say this, and honestly I just don't see anything more than speculation. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to get Rian out of the SW franchise forever after TLJ, he had his bite at the apple, he did it his way, I hope it was worth it to him. But did some communique come out and say that they weren't doing a SST? Or are we just taking the silence on the topic as evidence that it's being quietly shelved?

Because FTR, I'm not against a SST. I just wouldn't want to see Rian have anything to do with it.

I agree, its just speculation on my part. Once JJ saves the sequel trilogy, Disney will strategically part ways with RJ. Don't get me wrong, I like RJ and TLJ but now that RJ is working on a new film. I bet you he has other films lined up as well. The lies continue, no he's still working on Star Wars, He can work on 2 films at the same time...BS. Warner Bros., did the same with thing with Benfleck. Oh Yeah he's still Batman... until they snagged a new director who wants a different person to play Batman. I don't know what went wrong but reports are now surfacing that Benfleck's Batman script was really good.

RJ worked well with kk, TLJ made allot of money but the problem is TLJ's backlashed reached Iger's ears. I don't think Disney believes that another RJ Star Wars is a good idea. I want to see him give it a go. New characters, new Star Wars how can RJ mess that up he's a good writer and filmmaker. It hard to make a Star Wars film just ask the maker.

JJ is the rehash king so he'll give Star Wars fans what he thinks they want until the spectacle dies down and Star Wars fans wake up and say JJ is trash...

While I realize after peering through some of the pro-TLJ and pro-RJ threads here that certain YouTubers are pretty much hated, much of this information stems from insider information certain YouTubers have gotten. It's not all simply speculation. Some of these guys claim to have received information from sources working inside of Disney that claim Kathleen Kennedy is on her way out of the door sometime this year, some would say rather soon. In any case, after her departure, RJ is soon to follow (according to anonymous insider sources and speculation). From what I heard in the past and later to be followed up by claimed information from insider sources, was that getting rid of KK was difficult because of the loyalty, or fan club she placed around herself inside the studio. Later, others have speculated Disney is skittish about outright firing her because the SJW crowd would cry foul. So what most likely may happen is it may appear she is moving on to greener pastures. How RJ gets shown the door, I dunno.

In any case, one of the YouTubers testifies that his insider source assured him RJ's trilogy is pretty much a no go as of this point despite RJ's attempts to claim otherwise on social media. I'll also add that other media outlets, maybe not the big ones, have brought up the issue of R.J's personal trilogy getting the axe.

I personally don't see how a studio like Disney would let him do a trilogy after the divisive TLJ and his post-release antics.

R.J. is claiming his trilogy is still a go, but like you pointed out inside sources according to various critics I frequently listen to claim that R.J.'s trilogy is dead or at the very least on pause. More information as I said indicates Iger isn't feeling KK nor R.J., but most definitely KK. Much of this started hiting the rumor mill post Solo.

I can't really say R.J. is a good writer and filmmaker. Other than TLJ, the only other movie I've experienced from him is Looper. I admit I liked the latter so long as you didn't put any deep thought into it. It was a good action flick, but that's about it.

If Kk goes so does RJ. I think the only reason his trilogy is still a go is because KK is still around, and I think its on pause because he is working on a film with Daniel Craig. When you make a Star Wars film you must work closely with the art department to design new characters, vehicles, and locations. I don't see him able to tackle this while working on a film with a popular actor. His trilogy is on pause and will be quietly shelved. I'm not saying this because I hate RJ and TLJ. I've watched all of RJ's films and like them all including TLJ. I just see the writing on the wall.

If episode 9 is a hit and KK is still around then we might see RJ's trilogy... only time will tell.

Some have made some interesting observations that KK has been, for the most part, quiet in the public eye. As opposed to when she first received the position and was very vocal about productions coming out of LucasFilms, now she isn't as vocal. Some speculated this is primarily because she has been dethroned and is more of a figurehead until she's moved out. Again, some have claimed anonymous internal sources within Disney and/or LucasFilms confirms some of these details. I'm just conveying what I heard so call it hearsay or whatever. We'll have to wait and see.

I personally don't think KK and RJ would be kicked to the curb if it were just about the failures of two movies, but I think it's a combination of their antics when it came to dealing with criticism which caused division in the fan community and alienated a portion of said community that disliked the path Star Wars took.

A $750M+ gross against a $200M-ish production budget is a bomb? Yeah, no.
For one thing, she doesn't have any movies that need to be promoted anytime soon, and she's licking her wounds over the Solo debacle (which are still nowhere near enough to get her fired compared to the profit Star Wars has generated in the past few years under her leadership). Bob Iger was said to be incredibly happy with The Last Jedi and he was the one to greenlight Rian Johnson's film series (which will happen) and he doesn't strike me as the kind of person who'd fire someone, much less the most powerful woman working in Hollywood, over one movie that didn't deliver.

The "she's getting fired/stepping down" speculation largely seems to be wishful thinking on the part of fans who didn't like TLJ. Especially the stuff over her getting an award with her husband at next year's Oscars. The most prominent voice proclaiming that she's on the way out is Grace Randolph, who is a complete lunatic who makes complete nonsense up and appeals people who have racist and sexist tendencies.

I think it goes beyond just money. I was quite happy with TFA and R1 but hated the TLJ which in turn lead me not going to the cinema too see Solo.

Am more stressed out with KK only hiring White middle aged old men. Which is ironic because everyone says she has a feminist agenda and gave an OK for white male driven film in TLJ.

Maybe if she started hiring more women and minorities behind the camera the whole problem of TLJ may not have developed in the first place. That is firmly KK fault and the criticism is rightly pronounced.

Maybe if KK hired a female director her problems would be all solved.

It wouldn't save all her problems but either a poc or a female director would help her have more trust with these current characters and believing in those characters instead of pushing them a side. We are living in a current zietgiest which is pushing for inclusion which I think that JJ and KK pushed in TFA and R1. Lucasfilm has lost trust with the audience with old fashioned tropes. Plus I also think she needs to get hold of the story group. I think that's where the open wound lies. Have an anchored story arc not iggldy piggidly story line which don't segue.

What you said about KK would be true if you only look at one side of the story and then even narrow that down to a particular echo chamber of defending statements regarding fan backlash that come off as mostly imaginary rather than actually dealing with the reality of certain fan criticism as well as the aforementioned antics of KK, RJ, and the gang toward said backlash.

You repeat a lot of the usual nonsensical claims about fan disapproval of the current trends in certain pockets of entertainment subculture. If they're particular genre of entertainment wants to diversify and fans are upset that it goes against established lore, then they're racist or sexist. I'm black, I don't like a lot of uneccessarily forced representation, especially when for instance, when Marvel and DC has plenty of multicultural, ethnically diverse, female, and/or sexually oriented characters throughout their existing lore. It makes no sense to turn a white one black or a straight one gay or a male into a female. It's even worse when Marvel or DC does it themselves to pander to a particular identity politic agenda. But I get ignored and defense mechanisms only claim it's white sexist racists who are upset. Nonsense.

Grace Reynolds is but one voice amongst many who have claimed to have insider sources telling them their information. She's not the most prominent voice. You seem to be misinformed on that. It's interesting that insider sources are only accepted regarding things we like and not things we dislike sometimes. So whether it's wishful thinking or not is yet to be seen. I didn't step in proclaiming this was absolute truth, I said I heard this from sources who claim to have sources in Disney and/or LucasFilm feeding them information. Some of the people I've listened to have shown they do get insider info from time to time about a variety of topics in the entertainment industry to include comics, gaming, television, and cinema.

In any case, even when she had movies to promote she was far less vocal as opposed to her initial activity pre-TLJ. One would have to have some degree of blindly established loyalty to defend either anything Star Wars or KK to ignore the obvious fact there are troubles within the franchise. You can choose to believe the spin of the media trying to save the franchise for agenda driven reasons through the power of biased journalism or you can get out and listen to other vocal fans who may not think like you do and voice their disproval, etc. See that all is not well and perfect in the Star Wars Community to date. I also think the obvious failure of Solo is an indicator as well as Disney putting a pause on anthology movies.

While I recognize the possibility you two may be joking...

I would argue it's agendas like these, not saying you two are peddling them, but to the point, it's agendas like this "hire women, hire black people, hire asian people" that have many sectors of entertainment subculture in divisive territories. Why not simply hire the best person for the job? The best direcor? The best actor or actress? The best writer? The best this or that?

I don't think if she put a woman behind the camera that would've necessarily helped her. I think if she removed herself from agenda driven missions and sought to respect Star Wars and tell a good story she would have come away with some fans still unhappy, but not in the sense that they are now because of being labelled this or that pejorative simply because they recognize the agenda signalling and how it infected the product and voiced their displeasure.

Lastly, when they saw they had fans disliking their approach, instead of trying to label them sexist or racist why not simply address the fan issues? Maybe you shouldn't have killed off Luke the way you did and treated him as an angry old hermit who somehow developed into this character galaxies apart from the character we left in ROTJ? Maybe you should have addressed the fact that despite being self-proclaimed feminists you created pretty weak and stereotypical female characters? Maybe you should have addressed the reality that while you claim to be for inclusivity, you have a black character that started off as a main character then you regulated him to a side story? Or how about the Guatemalen actor who plays an ace pilot regulated to an idiot in order to strengthen a newly created female character just to make her look smart, etc.? Maybe if you had addressed the problems with your story telling and the seemingly hypocrisy in your social justice position things would've came out differently and would be different moving forward? Maybe. Also, the "you" in these questions are symbolically directed to KK, RJ, JJ, and LucasFilm at large under their rule and not directly to you p03 or you Rogues1138 although I quoted your posts.

I'm getting off my rant soapbox...

The issue I have with using racism or sexism for the reasons TLJ didn't resonate with the audience is I know it's propaganda. TFA had a black male and white female at the heart of the story and has become one of the highest grossing films. People didn't have complaints about TFA the way they did TLJ, so why is that same audience being accused of racism and sexism? It's the same audience for both films.

I think some people want to see more diversity behind the camera because they feel that might be the only way we get a film that's not formulaic. I do believe Star Wars needs to be seen through different eyes, because what we are getting right now doesn't look good. I have hope for John Favreau, but that's it.

Being a black man, I can recall a period when Marvel Comics was lead by Jim Shooter. Who for the most part was a great guy and very talented. He did some great things at Marvel during his tenure. All the super heroes were white(99% of them), I didn't have a problem with that because I was used to it.

These are the characters I grew up on, 99% of the creative team was white as well. Decades later a hispanic man heads the Marvel Offices and now the diversity is through the roof. Allot more hispanic and black creators now work for Marvel and lot more minority characters are launched. I was shocked to see a Black Captain America or a Black Spiderman.

It was shocking because as a black man collecting comics books for decades I was used to all the major characters being white. I started to pick up these comics to see if they were any good. But what really appalled me was when I was listening to a comic book podcast where the white hosts were upset that Marvel was changing their beloved characters into black characters. they said that they would now be buying more DC comics because you know what you can't turn Superman black( i know there is a Black Superman character named Steel... Steel isn't a major Superman ongoing title... anywho) . they also claimed that DC comics had better writers and creators. They were jumping ship because of Marvel's diversity.

ANYWHO, not to get off topic, no matter how abrupt or appalling it is to see more diversity in the Star Wars Universe it is by god needed. change has to be made and has to happen now even to the extent of hampering quality. You may call it affirmative action, diversity, or whatever, it must happen... or I ask you, when is a good time for it to happen?

Good on you JJ and KK ;) keep up the good work!

Depending on your age it could have been 99% all White, but only way back during the early stages of comics, but even then there are some debatable black characters. Most black characters of prominence began appearing in Marvel and DC around the early to mid 60's. Since then there have been black characters of prominence sprinkled throughout respective comic book universes.

I didn't mind a Black Captain America in the sense Sam Wilson took on the mantle while Steve Rodgers was suffering from a debilitating issue. However, what bothered me was the political pandering to one particular side of the spectrum with the character based on the current trend of anti-Trumpism, etc. Tell a good story, don't rob Sam Wilson of his ability to become a memorable successor of Steve Rodgers by making him unecessarily divisive as a character and weakening his stories as a result.

Same with Miles Morales, who appeared in an alternative universe which has recently merged with the original universe. Minus a silly minority that will always exist, the bulk of fans did not have a problem with Miles. Some actually prefer him over Parker. What fans would most likely have a problem with is something like turning Parker black or turning M.J. black just because we need representation. Doesn't make sense when Spider-Man's title has had black characters within it as far back as the 60's. One, Hobie Brown, for instance, debuted as the Prowler in the late 60's, started off a villain, became an anti-hero, then ally of Spider-Man to the point where he acted as Spider-Man to help protect Parker's secret identity.

The general point is that we don't have to force anything in comics, and I'd extend my argument to the whole of geek culture when there already exists diverse characters who can be strengthened by better writing, marketing, etc. I feel turning an existing successful white character black says something about laziness and doubt that a black character can't be made into a success. Something I believe Black Panther has disproven.

Depending on when this was, context would help. I know recently a lot of comic fans, black, white, and female, have been upset by the agenda forced into comics especially by Marvel. It has shown in sales and fan disgust. Only those who support said agendas praise them and they are not the original fanbase, nor do they seem to be supporting the move since the sales have dropped. Comic book stores have spoken out about these agendas forced into comics, etc.

Diversity is fine, but forcing it is another thing.

Then there's also demographics to deal with. As I hinted to above, most people who support identity politics aren't really fans of geek culture. They like to pat creators on the back for being "woke" or whatever, but they don't really shell out money in mass for the product. This is not to say that people who agree with these ideas aren't fans, just not en masse. Other fans just want good stories told of their favorite characters and if companies are up to the task good stories with new characters.

Same can be said for video games, science fiction, television, etc. in the geek culture branch of society. Since comic book movies have become a popular trend and to an extend other things in geek culture, certain agenda driven individuals think it is best that they try to implant their views of how society should be into these mediums. The problem is they don't tell good stories while doing it and they are very heavy handed with it as well.

Steel is but one Black Superman character and he is a prominent supporing member of the Superman family. So is his daughter, Natasha Irons. Both of them fight many battles with Team Superman. Batman also has Black characters in his Bat family. One was David Zavimbe, a Congolese police officer who trained with Batman and was proverbally blessed by Bruce to be sort of a Batman in Africa named Batwing who had a solo title running for a while. There is also an entire African-American version of the Justice League on two alternate Earths with a Black Superman named Kalel, human name Calvin Ellis who has interacted with Kal-El/Clark Kent from time to time. He is also the President of the United States in his world. He comes from Vahtlos Island along with many other Black Kryptonians, the island debuted in comics around the early 70's.

Again, the point in all this is that fans had no problems, the bulk of them that is. Sure, you can easily point to a minority who say absurdly racist or msyognistic things, but the majority didn't care that Black Kryptonians became established cannon or that Black characters became prominent heroes and/or heroines in Marvel and DC so long as the stories were well done. Look at Luke Cage, he got established as an Avenger, leader at that, albeit some Black fans were upset he married a white woman. So ignorance can go both ways.

My overall point is you don't need to force representation, especially when these intellectual properties transition to the big screen when you have established lore you can use in order to strengthen the popularity of existing characters.

Dude, they put a black guy in the movie. Teased he would be a Jedi, then turned him into a side character. That's not the type of diversity I was hoping for. Sure, we have Mace, etc. But KK, JJ, RJ and crew did what I'm talking about. They had lore they could've pulled from which had strong female characters, strong black characters, etc. in the Expanded Universe and they threw all that in the trash just to show they were making it up as they went along. They named Boyega's character "Finn" without even caring one existed and was a powerful Jedi who helped fight off an alien race invading the galaxy. They gave Leia and Han a son, turned him to the dark side and ignored a potential storyline they could've used in which a female (his sister) and male Jedi face off against the fallen son of the Skywalker dynasty. All this diverse lore they could've pulled from to utilize to enhance and strengthen the Star Wars universe while being diverse and telling good stories.

Overall, I have to say I disagree that "change has to be made and has to happen now even to the extent of hampering quality." Why does it need to hamper quality? Why can't change happen and enhance quality? Furthermore, why does the existing diversity in these properties have to be ignored for hamfisted attempts at it that ruin franchises? Why not just take existing characters and make them popular? Do the leg work? Do the marketing? Do the proper story telling? Hire competent writers, directors, producers, creators, staff, etc. and make it happen? Don't co-opt existing characters to get it done unless they're already in that diversity spectrum.

I can't applaud KK et al or pat them on the back right now. They seem to do too many counterintuitive things in regard to their supposed agenda.

Ignorance can go both ways indeed. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, my favorite super couple. Great post man... great post indeed.

I agree with this as well... well said. Change must occur no matter what hopefully they will learn from this and do the leg work...

So just to follow up from a few days before, according to Rian the trilogy is still happening.

    https://www.cbr.com/rian-johnson-star-wars-trilogy-still-happening/

Again, I'm not a fan, and given what he did with TLJ and the characters (especially Finn and Luke), I'm honestly more inclined to boycott this trilogy than anything else. I went to see SOLO, I went to see R1, and I'm still going to see EPIX. I've gone to all the movies that people initially grumbled about. Rian Johnson at the helm of more SW would represent tone deafness by LFL the likes of which we have never seen before. If he has anything to do with it, I won't. He had his bite at the apple and chose to shoot the bird to long time fans laughing and giggling the whole way. So be it. If they want to leave all of that money on the table for the greater good of Rian Johnson, so be it. I cease to be amazed at Rian Johnson being the hill that the franchise is willing to die on.

Just for the sake of discussion, what would it take for you to see his film?

For me, I'm waiting to see how things progress. I can't say I'm excited, but a part of me hopes that because he has his own story apart from the main Saga, it might actually be okay. Give him his own place to play around with things.
But again, I'm going to see how things progress; what they will talk about and show leading up to release, what's in the trailers, the marketing, so on and so forth.
I will probably see it in theaters. We'll see.

BLUF: If I'm being completely transparent, I don't think there's anything that could get me to see the film if Rian has anything to do with it. I am not opposed to a new trilogy. I'm not opposed to it taking place some place else in the galaxy, and not involving the same main characters or same warring factions. Conceptually it interests me.

What is off-putting is Rian. Nothing he did in the run up to it's premiere, nor in the following aftermath of the fallout suggests to me that he respects the art that came before (or the fans that enjoyed it). And I believe this is due to the fact that Rian is one of those people who believes he is "the smartest man in the room". We don't get it, but HE gets it. We don't understand what's magical in the GFFA, but HE understands what's magical in GFFA. All these years, decades actually... we haven't actually gotten what was Star Wars, but Rian, our benevolent savior, HE got it, and he was there with TLJ in the nick of time to enlighten us to our 40 year old folly. Now finally, with his vision in place, we can all actually enjoy Star Wars because... surely we didn't before. Not until Rian.

Mark Hammil tells you he fundamentally disagrees with the direction you've written a character that was LOVED long before you showed up, long before you made a film, long before you were getting rejection letters from USC's film school... and your response is that you shouldn't make the movie the audience wants, but the movie that you want? That's a problem; a huge red flag. It's true Rian would conceptually do less damage in an unexplored corner of the galaxy, but if he:

    1. Doesn't respect foundational aspects of Star Wars
    2. Is interested in making a movie he wants, not the one an audience would enjoy

why would you have any faith in him? He has demonstrated he'll willingly (and gleefully) make a movie that people don't actually want. Why wouldn't he do it again?

To draw an analogy, allow me to use NBA All Star Weekend. The OT (to me) was like NBA All Star Weekend when you had stars like Jordan, Spud Webb, Dominique Wilkins in the Dunk Contest. It was great. As the years started to go on, the dunk contest took a noticeable nose dive in quality... this to me is the ST. Still enjoyable, but clearly not the same caliber as the original. TLJ would be the years the NBA decided to replace the dunk contest with what they called 2-Ball Competition. And the same way some people tried (in futility) to tell you how much better the 2-Ball competition was than the Dunk Contest and how much you would enjoy the new change if you would just get out of your own head, so too were these arguments used in defending TLJ. It was new, it was fresh, it was different... so was 2 Ball. But it was bad; it was watchable, but not enjoyable. It was different in all the wrong ways. Since people showed up to All Star Weekend anyway I'm sure someone argued, "we made a lot of money so 2 Ball was obviously a successful endeavor" (much like has often been argued for TLJ).

I am confident Rian wouldn't change a single thing about his SW movie if he could. That would imply he made mistakes, and the smartest man in the room doesn't make mistakes, it's the audience that was wrong. I wouldn't have him involved in anything SW related - period. We don't need to "give him a chance", he's had one. TLJ was it. He made the film he wanted. He's not the right man for the job in this franchise. Just my opinion anyway.

But you forget something very important why did Solo bombed? It is because the Backlash from the Fans who did not like TLJ its a little more than 50%. This 50% who did not spend their money on Solo, plus the money that was wasted in re-shooting basically redoing the whole movie, this was not a smart move on KK's behalf. So even though KK made money off TFA, R1 , and TLJ , Solo failing due to the backlash its a signs the Fans are not happy. So either a few things are going to happen, either she steps down and let someone else take over LucasFilm if not the Backlash will enter Star Wars 9.

Most likely 9 will have at theme that will go with Disney new Star Wars' theme park. If Star Wars 9 50% + of those fans don't see 9 due to hating TLJ and did not spend money on Solo. Disney is going to have to make new changes related to KK either she step down before 9 comes out or Disney going to lose bigger than Solo, they going lose on 9 and their new Star Wars theme's park. So something have to be change because those 50% star wars fans who like the Last Jedi are not enough to make a box office hit as they was not enough to save Solo, neither are they enough to save 9 and Disney new Star Wars' theme park. Except bring back the 50% + who hated the Last Jedi and they will not be happy until KK is gone or her agenda is out of Star Wars movie forever. Only way to convince those fans are by letting her step down gracefully bow out. Take her agenda out of 9, have the new characters more of a back story with development, and restore Luke Skywalker honor.
