The more I think about the messages in their stories, I think Finn and Rey's stories should have been switched. Think about, Finn was already raised to believe in putting the First Order before himself and Rey was raised alone and fending for herself. Wouldn't it make more sense for Finn to be the "nobody" hero that finds his purpose and Rey the one that has to learn to think about more people than herself?

Please note: No I am not saying Finn needed to be "the Jedi" I am strictly referring to the function of their respective stories.

No. Finn can't be self doubtful as a nobody as he was already forcibly indoctrinated into an evil organization.

Rey is a Pollyanna. She already thinks about people other than herself because that's her ideal dream life. It's what she craves for validation.

Finn on the other hand, doesn't give a %$@% about validation.

You can tell this by just their individual interactions with Han in TFA

Finn just has more 'lead character' qualities for me than Rey.
So no, it makes no sense as to why their roles are the way they are.

JJ set Finn up to be a big deal. Between the three leads. He moved the story the most. JJ never had any intentions of this being the Rey and Kylo show. That's why TLJ didn't make any sense. Rey, Kylo and Finn's story is too intertwined to leave out any character.

I almost inappropriately giggled at this. I DIDN'T, but I almost did.

Never caught that similarity! Another parallel between Finn and Luke.

Haven't read the book yet, but thanks for catching this!

I agree but unfortunately being that they're in the Star Wars universe, the head honchos at Lucasfilm can get away with not realizing the potential of his character with nary a dissenting whisper from the fandom at large. The reason why is because, again unfortunately, as much as they state the contrary, they don't really have any interest in any protagonist that's not "the Jedi".

I agree but I think he should have been more clear and concrete about what he was setting him up to be and shouldn't have leaned so heavily on the comedy angle. If he had done and not done those two things respectively, I think Rian wouldn't have had any choice but to give him the attention and care he deserved. Of course some of that is Rian fanboying over Kylo and the fandom doing the same for him and also Rey while taking away nothing from Finn's story except the idea that he was a janitor, which isn't true and that there weren't even hints that he was potentially being set up as force-sensitive, which I personally think is true.

I hate to rain on the parade, but this trilogy was always about Rey. Lucas' original pitch was a young woman becoming a Jedi. I love Finn, but JJ didn't set Finn up to be the center of the story. This is the Skywalker Saga and Kylo Ren being the Lillian and the grandson of Anakin meant he was also going to be a significant part of the story.

I 100000000000000 PERCENT .... Agree with you, the set up was not for Finn. He was just the Marketed as being someone important or as the main hero to promote the movie and to bring the element of surprise. At the end of 7 it was clear he was just a side kick for Rey, and in 8 was a better picture that he was only a side character and these leaked pictures for 9 its clear he just will be Rey and Poe's side kick.

and this picture that was shown by JJ of as we can see Finn standing in the back while Poe flies the millennium falcon and co pilot is Chewie, and Finn standing in the back he now Poe's new sidekick Finn. So Finn is Rey and Poe side kick now that all he is. We will see in 9 he is in a lot of fights along side Poe and at times with Rey. The new characters they have in 9 they will need more time on screen to show who they are to the audience, so that forsure will take more time away from Finn. He only a side character who is a token character. Dont put your hopes to high about Finn.

Even in all these pictures you notice he standing in back of Poe, not on his side or even in front of him because it a sign that he is his sidekick, he is assisting Poe.

Then why did he have more dialogue than any other character in TFA. Rey doesn't even have a story to tell, so what are you talking about. You guys use the words of the press when it fits your description on how you see things, but ignore it when it does not. Kathleen Kennedy also said Boyega was a lead, but you all ignore that too. I could think of a number of better stories with women at the forefront than using some force wielding female. These trilogies have had two women placed into positions of power at young ages. That would have been a better story to tell about women in the war instead of this nonsense. She was intriguing until Rian screwed that up. What are we suppose to follow when it comes to Rey and what are we suppose to cheer for?

Notice how they went from him and look how the numbers took a nosedive. Everyone that went to see TFA wasn't going because of Rey. If people don't see themselves as bad ass you won't make a dime from them. The choice is theirs, and in a world full of choices. A franchise can be forgotten real quickly.

Who cares who talks the most? That's irrelvent when it comes to who is the center of the story. Boyega, Issac, Ridley, and Driver are all leads in this trilogy. Rey is the clearly the center of this story. To suggest otherwise is wishful thinking.
That's awesome. You should pursue a career in storytelling. We definitely need better stories with female leads.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Anyway, we get it. You love FInn, hate TLJ, and you could tell a better story.

So... something I've noticed that is common to all of Finn's melee incursions; it seems like they all have a checklist.

Finn takes the first steps that lead to the confrontation
    • He goes out on Takadonna looking to save Rey
    • He rushes at Kylo
    • He rushes at Phasma
    Finn scores a minor victory
    • He stabs a ST that just shot a rebel
    • He wounds Kylo's arm
    • He knocks out a trooper on his way to Phasma
Finn spends the majority of the confrontation overwhelmed, back pedalling, and/or on defense
    • He is back pedalling and being overpowered by TR-8R most of the fight
    • He is back pedalling and being overpowered by Kylo and being easily parried most of the fight
    • He is back pedalling and being overpowered by Phasma most of the fight
    Finn is ultimately defeated
    • TR-8R knocks him off his feet and is poised to deliver a finishing blow with the riot baton
    • Kylo cuts his back and leaves him for dead
    • Phasma knocks him off his feet and down what appears to be a shaft
Finn is saved by an outside source/event/occurrence
    • Rey picks up the LS and defeats Kylo, saving Finn
    • Han shoots TR-8R and kills him, saving Finn
    • Rose distracts Phasma and the platform rises allowing Fin to avoid death/serious injury

Any reason to believe this pattern doesn't continue in EPIX especially since most of the Pro-TLJ contingent believe that the character exhibits tremendous growth between TLJ and TFA? I have also heard it said, that JJ liked the Finn character and therefore will take care of him to which I might point out, that two of the losses on Finn's resume occur on JJ's watch in TFA. Are we sure that he sees a need to reflect Finn differently? Is it possible/preferrable that we don't see Finn fight at all?

It all depends. If we go by the Finn we had in TLJ. I don't want him using any other weapon besides a mop. I've heard more about his cleaning duties than combat skills. Perhaps the Resistance will win thanks to Finn making sure the windows are spot free. Then again it will probably be BB 8 showing him how to do that. At least this way there will be continuity.

I wonder how many people are sitting at home thinking to themselves how they can't wait to see Finn kick ass with cleaning supplies. What's so sad. I would take that, because at least he would be doing his own thing. One thing I do not want is for Finn to be like everyone else. That's corny. Either make him force sensitive or make him a bad ass Star Wars Mr. Clean. It would be different too.

I do believe JJ always had something bigger in plan when it came to Boyega's character. Unlike Rian Johnson. JJ isn't that tone deaf to realize that a franchise needs to have bad ass characters to sell. Something Rian Johnson knows nothing about. The biggest thing coming out as a toy was freaking Porgs. Lol. No new constumes for the leads. No new weapons or anything where children can play pretend.

Seems like there was more thought and care put into Finn's fight with Nines (TR-8R) than there was in his fight with Phasma. Remember how people were talking about how she was going to be so great as his main antagonist? Then she appears in TLJ for the same exact amount of time as she did in TFA (1:45) bringing her total screen time up to an astounding 3:30. Rian couldn't even be bothered to even expand her time literally one second and gave her and Finn about ten seconds total of fight time simply because of what seems like begrudging obligation. I say if he was going to waste her and their fight like that then he should have at least had Finn win convincingly. At least then we could have seen some growth for Finn as a warrior.

Side note: Before anyone tries to argue against Finn hypothetically winning their fight straight up due to lack of experience or something, I expect the same amount of pushback for all the other character's inconsistencies, that are actually in the movie.

They need to answer why Finn couldnt fly a Tie fighter in TFA, but in TLJ he was able to fly a shuttle and the crait speeders. All continuity was lost.

OK I was just kidding. Just had a long twitter battle where the guy didnt like TLJ because Finn couldnt fly a Tie fighter, but could fly a shuttle and a speeder. Cant find where in TLJ he flys a shuttle. The person said it that not only flow the shuttle to Canto Bight, but had 2 lines in TLJ where he said he could pilot the shuttle. All I can find is him sitting in a chair and stating how much time the Raddus has left. Assuming that is the pilots chair it is Rose who walks up and flips switches and stuff.

Read the novelization of the Last Jedi , Rose teaches Finn how to fly the shuttle when going to Canto Bight.

I hated the Last Jedi, but all the plot holes they try to fix it in the novel.

So what I've notice in the novel and the movie Finn and Rey goes through the same learning task.

Rey had Luke to teach her (the way of the Jedi) and on the other side she had Kylo pulling her to the dark side and she had a decision to make, while Kylo was telling her do not join a side Jedi or Sith, both sides had flaws.

Finn had Rose to teach him (they way of the Resistance) , and DJ was calling him not to join a side the Resistance or the First Order, how those on Canto Bight were selling weapons to the Resistance and First Order. Rey had to face Snoke, and Finn had to face Phasma. Snoke got the best of Rey, as Phasma almost had Finn beat. Snoke was destroyed by the help of Kylo Ren, and Finn destroyed Phasma in the novel of the Last Jedi that moving plat form, while Finn was fighting Phasma he notice it and used it as a tactic to fight her. While they did not show this in the movie.

Rey had to make a choice when she was asked to join Kylo , and Finn had to make a choice to join the Resistance when DJ told him not to join a side.

Rey in the novel and the movie was thinking about Finn, and Finn was clearly thinking about Rey all two movies.

Difference between Rey and Finn, Rey join the Resistance , Finn was running from it. Rey is not happy about who she is her past related to her family. From TFA Finn's confession to Rey he accepts not knowing his family but he running from the fight.

Rey told Luke the Resistance need him and Finn. That was odd how she said Finn, which shows she was thinking much of Finn.

Teachers/ Role Models and heart breaks in the last Jedi:

Rey and Rose was alike in the last jedi in a small way.

Rey looked up to Luke Skywalker and when she meet him she was disappointed by Luke refusing to teach her and Luke not wanting to return to help those who depended on him and who she love. Luke ends up returning and save the Resistance.

Rose looked up to Finn, from what Paige told her what Finn did in Starkiller Base. When she seen him trying to escape she was disappointed. Finn ends up joining the Resistance and Rose see Finn in action when he fights Phasma. Rey did not witness her role model teacher fight Kylo. She did feel him when he died. Rey was heart broken when she seen Kylo killed Snoke but he would not help the resistance.

Snoke was killed with Rey's melee weapon, and Finn defeated Phasma with a melee weapon.

Rey's role model/ teacher sacrifice himself, Rose role mode sacrifice himself but Rose prevented him.

Something I notice that was odd of the Last Jedi because it followed the Return of the Jedi beat by beat.

Luke when he went to Vader and Sidious, Luke could fell they was in danger. Luke had feelings for his friends Leia his sister and Han Solo and Chewie.

Rey had feelings for Finn but she did not know he was Snoke's ship along with her and on screen the passed each other she was going up on the elevator and Finn was walking with Rose and DJ and BB8. Which can be a sign Rey did not reach her full power yet, or RJ did not think about this, or he did her thoughts at that time was about about redeeming Ben Solo.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 11, 2019, Original Post Date: Jan 11, 2019 ---

I have my theory about FInn and Phasma fight. In the Force Awakens 9 beats Finn when he had a light saber in his hand, but Finn later on gets a hit off Kylo Ren but not a hit of Nines?(*)* Sounds crazy, Finn somewhat kills Phasma but lost to Nines? Is Nines better that Kylo Ren and Phasma lol he should be the main villian of the movie lol.

But this is my theory why Finn lost to him but gets a hit off Kylo Ren and later defeats Phasma.

When we see Finn fights Nines lets take a look what happen before that while in Maz castle. Rey had a force vision by touching Luke's saber that once was owned by his father. Then Rey runs out, the next scene is Finn caring things into a ship, he hears screams turn up and look. But there no one outside of any balcony on Maz casstle despite what Pablo said, because when those in Maz castle came out they was quiet and surprised. My theory is Finn had his connection with the force there he heard those on the Hoziaon System screams because it was those same screams they let you see what screams Finn was hearing. That was his small hint of his force connection, and next what happens we see Rey outside running from Maz's castle . Fight and First Order invades them. Maz gives Finn this light saber and told him he has a weapon and Rey needs him.

Finn first fight with the saber to Nines and his lost it was Finn connection with the force start with him, he not like Rey as every force users are not on the same level some are stronger than others with the force. Finn has no teacher how to use the force. But its showing you Finn has a connection he loses to Nines, but killed Trooper before that, loses to Nine, his next fight with the Saber was Kylo Ren he loses but he holds him self for a while with Kylo Ren who trained in the force. If Nine beated Finn with ease but Kylo struggles either Kylo a weak villian or the reason why Finn gets a hit is because its the force growing with him slowly. That explains why he was able to get a hit off Kylo Ren. Force with Finn growing. Finn next fight after that we see in TLJ scene with the First Order and Phasma. Once Snoke's ship was strucked when Finn picks up the melee weapon that looks like a saber, the first trooper came to him one strike Finn kills him striking him accross his neck and this trooper was in the way of Phasma. He takes him out with no struggle, while he was heading to Phasma. Finn gets a hit off Kylo but he fights Phasma, is Kylo weaker than Phasma ? No. He is not, its Finn's connection with the force it is growing more. Finn fighting Phasma and he wins with fighting her with using tactics which the novel said he seen the moving plat form while he was fighting her, and Finn beats her with striking her across her helmet and she falls to her death.

My theory they are showing little by little the force is growing with Finn. If you disagree then Kyo Ren and Phasma are weaker than Nines and Disney Star Wars main villian who to be the next Vader is a big Joke. That also makes Snoke a bigger joke because Kylo beats him but Finn gets a hit off Finn, but defeated by Nines. Nines should be the leader of the First Order if you disagree with Finn has a connection with the force.

In 2019 there is a Finn Star Wars comic book coming out I hope they explore this more for those Fans who dont want to accept Finn has a connection with the Force. If they do not make that clear then it will make their main Villian very very weak!

    Whoa. Didnt expect that.

Well one I disagreed with the other person. The line he said was said twice in the film wasnt said. I have checked and double checked and no where does he say that and no where in the film does he pilot the shuttle. Now I did read the novelization of The Last Jedi. Dont recall the training scene of Finn, but that wasnt the argument either. The other person said that Finn's ability to fly the shuttle in TLJ negates his need for Poe in TFA. He should have simply stole a Tie fighter and left on his own in TFA.

As for me. The Last Jedi is my new favorite Star Wars film and if you want to nitpick it to claim it has plot holes then do the same to all the Star Wars films starting with ANH.

All that is in the novel of the last jedi, there a part from the novel when Poe thinking about the plan to go to Canto Bight he said either to him self " Finn can't fly but Rose can fly a shuttle {she has this training}) this is the same chapter when they leave and Rose tells Finn 'do not touch nothing ' on the shuttle and he does, and she tells him she will teach him to fly/ land the shuttle and this is the same time they learnt BB8 was on their ship. Then Finn in the novel crash landed on the beach it said clearly that Rose was in the Co pilot seat. Means Finn flies the shuttle. Go back and read that section of the book I was listening to it last night on my Alexa she read books aloud from Kindle.

If I get some free time will post the pages here .

Doesnt matter because then Finn is taught how to fly in TLJ so TFA is not contradicted.
