I think the light hearted moments are there to engage the disinterested members of the audience, those who can't take the story seriously. I think good story depends upon being attached to the characters, strong characters make a strong story, and at the moment I'm (personally) running dry on the ST. Kylo Ren is my only hope and that's not a rock to build church on.
    Cheerleader Finn, motivation character. Wonderful.
    I'm_outta_here!.gif

No, but seriously let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'd wait until TLJ before I fully drop interest in Finn, at the moment the box is still closed and we don't know whether the cat is dead or alive in there.
But he likely won't be the underdog. His non-superpower character will remain in the non-superpower story against other non-superpower antagonists. In the rare occasion he ventures into the superpowered side of the story he will be crushed and rescued by our superpowered protagonist. It's exceedingly rewarding.

Someone had to say it. Although I disagree with the cartoon imbecile part, yes he was comedic but I wouldn't say he was stupid.

I'm also not comforted by the "badass" Han comparisons. Maybe it's just me but I never thought of Han as badass, I thought of him as funny.

I despise the word "badass." It's an empty phrase. Arguably every hero of a film that has at least a minimal amount of action is a "badass."

I wouldn't care so much for how does starwars.com represents the characters of ST, especially since we have two more films before us. I wouldn't also have too much hope for Luke after seeing only Episode IV, as he's incredibly childlish, irresponsible and a bit annoying in that film.

I suppose badass is so loosely defined that people use it for any old thing now. I suppose I interpret it as "formidable" from a combat perspective.

And totally with you there on Luke in ANH, he was whiny and childish but I suppose that was intentional.

"What Finn lacks in Force sensitivity, he makes up for in courage and dedication."

Just sayin. I'm sure someone will have excuse for why that's somehow just misdirection etc. even though I think just the title of VIII makes it pretty clear force sensitives are going to be at a minimum.

That works if you're the only central protagonist (or Batman) because in that case the writers are pretty much guaranteed to make accommodations ( prep time, training) for you to defeat the main villain and to at least look formidable next to the ones that have powers. It doesn't so much work when the other of the two main protagonists is so overpowered that they're completely outclassing you and the main villain with no problem at all despite a lack of training. Not only, that but the training you do have, which you've had your whole life, is shown to mean pretty much absolutely nothing as while your co-protagonist is allowed to walk through the main villain you're shown getting beat down by a henchman that has the same training as you. It's even worse in this case where you're starting off in the second movie exactly where you ended the first, in a coma, with no time to train and get better before being thrust back into action.

    5. Finn

In a world without a Jedi Academy or Padawans, or any of the other pre-Empire comforts, every Jedi needs someone to pick them up when they fall. Luke had Han, Ezra has Kanan, and Rey — Rey has FN-2187. Finn. While Finn doesn’t quite have a handle on how the Force works (and Han tells him as much in one of the best moments in The Force Awakens), he proves he doesn’t need to in order to save his friend from Starkiller Base. What Finn lacks in Force sensitivity — though he may want to take a class or two in lightsaber dueling, just to be safe — he makes up for in courage and dedication.

So in that list it compared him the han a non jedi force sensitive and kanan also a non jedi force sensitive. Then they say what he lacks in force sensitivity he makes up for with courage, but he may wanna take up lightsaber training just encase?

If they aren't telling you the guy is still non jedi force sensitive character why make those comparisons?

That same list made reference to Chirrut Imwe, noting that despite his inclusion on the list as "non-Force sensitive" he may essentially be able to use the Force:

    (emphasis added)

My point is, I don't think we should read too much into this list... as it is what we know at this point in time about the characters.

Chirrut Imwe is attuned to the force. that is how he senses the kyber crystal in his staff. No he isn't adept with it like a luke or obi-wan but he still uses it. I think that is what we will get from finn. A connection with the force but not a Jedi.

Obi-Wan, according to George Lucas, was an average level force user. He wasn't on the same level as Luke who was unusually strong.

Luke and Rey are the last Jedi, maybe also Ben Solo... but Finn no.

just to play devils advocate here... but who decides that Finn isn't force sensitive?

i'm not referring to the story group or film writers, i mean in TGFFA which Jedi has he met that could have picked up on FS within him or not?

not saying he is FS or not, but until he meets Luke we won't actually know if he's capable of becoming a Jedi or not.
right now, he is a non FS hero.. of course he is. only a Jedi could decide otherwise ;)

Rey's journey was different, the force sought her out. it wasn't until the force back occured that maz picked up on it.

that's from the databank under 'Rey'. these things can be easily mis-read, and these entries will all change during the course of the trilogy.

Nobody will accept this argument but I have to say it: Finn will not be Force Sensitive because that's not how story beats work.

Well he wasn't in TFA, he talked many times about using it but we never seen him use it.

You mean story beats like the evil dude you have been training to kill is actually you long dead father? Or the chick you tried to make out with is your lost sister, heir to the galaxy and the back up plan if you fail? Or prehaps you mean a beat like a girl knocked out wakes up and can force pull a saber from a trained force user? Yep star wars stories never have a twist.

People argue about what Finn will and will not be. At the end of the day Finn's character will be whatever the creators of the film decide they want Finn's role to be. There is very little logic to it. From Finn's back story in the movie much of his behavior makes hardly any real world sense, and the same goes for Rey.

They mentioned that they left it wide open in the TFA, but in an ambiguous way, for Rian Johnson to make the decisions on the direction of characters like Finn, Rey and Poe. Whether Finn and Rey end up together, or Finn being force sensitive etc. There's clearly hints at Finn being force sensitive in TFA. The most alarming one if him hearing the Starkiller base firing on the New Republic. There's no noise, and his back is completely turned, and he turns around with a shocked facial expression already on his face.. that was a subtle seed planted imo just incase Rian Johnson wanted to take the route with the character, so we could look back and be like OH it makes sense.

With all that said.. I think Finn NOT being force sensitive makes him more of a badass character. He had such development in TFA, he was funny, brave, unsure of himself, but in the fight with Kylo Ren, we had a glimpse of the Finn we are going to see in the next two installments. Finn taking on Kylo Ren, as a non force sensitive just gets me more pumped at that fight for the sheer bravery of the character.. As Boyega pointed out, Finn got to hang with Han Solo and Chewie, use the gunner on the Falcon, and use Anakin Skywalkers lightsaber. Standout character for me personally. Finn, Chirrut, K2S0 and Admiral Raddus are the 4 characters of these new Star Wars movies that really had me on the edge of my seat with all kind of emotions
