Gareth is a true inspiration for this generation. His untitled spinoff will only be his 3rd feature length film. Like the other directors involved with the upcoming movies he too is a huge Star Wars fan. May the Force be with him!

I love Monsters! An amazing achievement, considering how it was made on such a small scale. Unfortunately I missed Godzilla in the cinema, so I'm waiting for the Blu-ray, but I have faith in his ability to bring us a great Star Wars film. I'm really looking forward to it.

I wasn't a big fan of Godzilla. In fact, I was extremely disappointed after being really excited for it. But I guess that had more to do with the writing what with all the unsympathetic characters and the internally inconsistent plot. The visuals were really cool and I think he created a really great world for Godzilla. Plus, Monsters was great. I'm just concerned that someone as talented as Edwards is teamed up with Gary Whitta. Seems like a recipe for mediocrity. I guess we'll see. Don't get me wrong. I'm as excited as anyone for this movie to come out. At least we get a real Star Wars fan helming this film.

Big fan of Gareth. Came here to see what other people thought. I first saw Monsters right when it came out on DVD, and I thought it was a marvelous little film that captured great political commentary in a sci-fi monster movie. The effects were gorgeous as well, considering the budget. Godzilla (2014) has been one of my favorite movies this year, it had a wonderful build up/suspense factor going for it. Gareth does right by the source material as well, he knows how to make an excellent movie. Can't wait to see what he has in store for Star Wars.

I actually just got to see Godzilla today . . . finally. My 6 days a week job (3rd shift) prohibits me from seeing movies much.

Anyway, I was very impressed. Great movie! I agree with @jarjarstinks in that the story was rather weak BUT I disagree with the idea that a Godzilla movie is about story to begin with. It's NOT. It's about spectacle and special FX and Gareth delivered in spades. Wonderfully visualized and conceived movie that did exactly what it was supposed to while having a modest little story that took us on an adventure. I mean the movie Twister has no story, yet I love to watch it anyway just because of the spectacle.

I can't wait to see what GE has in store for us with his spinoff. I suspect it will be Boba Fett but we shall see. Whoever the subject is it will rock hard!

The important thing about Godzilla, is not how good a movie it is in a vacuum, but how good a movie it is in the continually developing Godzilla universe (he's like James Bond in Japan, practically).

You can take all that back story and budget (read Disney Star Wars) and create Godzilla 1998 (terrible) or Godzilla 2014, which I really enjoyed.

If he can do the same with Star Wars, we're in for a treat.

There was an alleged schedule leaked to a German website that was listed as follows:

    2015 - Episode VII
    2016 - Boba Fett
    2017 - Episode VIII
    2018 - Solo
    2019 - Episode IX
    2020 - Red Five

I tend to think that with the concept art leaks we obviously see a use of code names -- Foodles, Avco, Kira, Dark Knight etc... BUT the titles pretty much reveal the subject IMO. So I would say we're going to see one kick-ass Boba Fett movie and I am psyched about it!

I loved Monsters, but Godzilla fell flat for me at about the 1/3 mark. It's difficult to know what to expect from someone without much in his portfolio of work.

My hope is that they will give him a character/subject to work with where only a couple characters need to develop throughout the film. In Godzilla, there were a lot of characters that I felt could have been "cardboard cutouts" because of the lack of development. However, the main characters in Monsters were incredibly fleshed out.

I think Gareth is a competent director; I just hope he plays to his strengths in his film and doesn't try to experiment too much (a little is ok).

What kind of sick joke is this? He only has two barely above average monster movies under his belt. If such a low caliber director is allowed to put his hands on the Star Wars universe.. then the franchise is doomed outside the episodic films. It's as simple as that. His direction of Godzilla was far from impressive, I guess Disney will be hiring Neill Blomkamp and Shane Black to direct the other two.. If we're lucky.

In all fairness though, as far as Star Wars spinoffs are concerned they really only have one direction to go: up.

    So at least there's that.

Disney is clearly going with up and comers who have shown promise in Johnson and Edwards. And he did show significant promise in Monsters. The movie is far from perfect, but it is interesting. Godzilla was somewhat forgettable. But most young directors aren't entirely successful their first time on a major studio tent pole. He showed flashes of talent in both. So I'm optimistic he might be able to pull it together here. It usually takes a few movies for a director to get everything clicking. But he has the eye and the brain. Just needs to make it all click.

I've been very impressed with him. What he did with Monsters on a small budget was impressive, and I thought he made the most out of an average Godzilla script. Keep in mind that Godzilla was his first big studio effects film based on someone else's script. Alien 3 was a terrible movie but that had nothing to do with Fincher.

Edwards has shown he knows how to handle special effects without losing the humanity of the story. That's the main thing you want out of a Star Wars director.

Thank god they didn't get David Fincher. Remember Alien 3?

Gareth Edwards is going to knock it out of the park. It's Gary Whitta's/Chris Weitz script I'm worried about.

Disney should not be taking these sorts of risks, regardless of whether Gareth Edwards is the next Scorsese. I guarantee that none of these spinoffs will compete with Revenge Of The Sith.
