obviously other people feel like he actually was pro-active when it mattered and it was plenty resonant. [shrug]

again, it's your perception of the character. it's totally subjective.
when Ren calls his father "weak and foolish" there is some truth to that. whether we like it or not.

 

I really do understand being frustrated with having Han regress. I hate that we didn't get the happily-ever-after that RotJ promised. (I think sometimes our own personal head canons are useful to help us cope with what we don't like about canon, as long as we realize that we made them up. )

But I don't think that having Han die as the culmination of hunting down his son makes Han's death resonant at all. In fact, I think it would belittle it. It would turn Kylo Ren's act of patricide into nothing more that reasonable and perfectly justifiable self-defense. How does that help Han's character or the story? What's the point of his death then?

 

I understand you have to give the film an edge and I understand having the characters be separated. That being said, yes Han hunting down would give Ren some empathy but it makes Han’s arc have an edge. He’s trying to put down his son because he is murdering people. The reason why his death would resonate more because we are lead to believe he is going do this but by the time we see him confront his son and when Ren takes off his mask, Han can’t do it anymore. He realizes he can’t kill his son so he allows himself to be killed.

He doesn’t necessarily have to gun him down but he could at least try to hunt his son to bring him back. I mentioned earlier but what if he got in the way during the fight between Ren and Rey and Ren killed by accident? He dies trying to stop the two from fighting because he knows they’re both related. I know that’d make a different story but at least it does away with the mystery box and gives you something to care about

All I am saying is the film lacked character consistency and wasn’t committed to one storyline. Han’s characterization was one of them. Rey deciding to run away from the lightsaber is another unearned beat. She decides she’s going to get BB-8 to safety but sees these random images and then decides run away. There’s no consistent arc. There’s a lot of short cuts that the film takes, which makes the film feel emotionally all over the place.

Again this is just me and other people feel differently and that’s ok. I liked Force Awakens but didn't love it for those reasons.

 

I'll tell you what: we'll agree that the mystery boxes stink. I resent these two whole years we'll have to spend shaking them and trying to figure out what's inside!

Monday again Han.

 

I mean, that's one way the story could be told. The one big thing we're leaving out, though, is the reason that Han tried to bring Ben back. It wasn't necessarily because Ben is his son. No, remember that Leia specifically requested to Han to bring Ben back. After the sleazy path Han's apparent'y been down since Ben's departure, we see Han finally act like a family man for the first time in the entire movie. He's doing what he has to do for his child and his wife, and even though there's a huge dissonance between what fans expected of how Han would be (especially EU fans) and what he eventually was, he eventually redeems himself.

In a way, I like it, because it's a sort of "meet your heroes" kind of thing. Like, for decades, fans have imagined what Han would be like after ROTJ. We got books about it, comics, headcanon- but hen all of that was retconned and we got a new movie showing it, Han's kind of devolved into a scumbag again. It might not be pretty, but it's far from unbelievable- many real life marriage suffer the same fate. But, in the end, Disney does give Han his chance of redeeming himself, and simultaneously Kylo Ren gets his chance at earning his place a a villain in the franchise.

So yeah, there's definitely a sort of dissonance in this film regarding Han and the audience's expectations, but I think on subsequent viewings that he was actually handled pretty well.
