SPECULATION Official Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) Discussion

Does anybody else think Jyn could be a double-agent? What if her backstory is a cover, and she's actually an ISB agent or spy trying to sabotage the Rebellion? Then, as she spends more time with the Rebellion, she comes to question the Empire and sympathize with them, resulting in a conflict of interest? At the very least, the trailer seems to hint at a conflict of interest for Jyn.

 

She has a 'chip on her shoulder'. That's what I pick up on about her personality.

 

The timing of this movie coming out and Episode VIII potential revealing Rey's parentage (if Rey is indeed Luke's daughter) would be on point, so I wouldn't call it too far of a stretch just yet.

Agreed; showing that in the trailer and then having it be a plot twist later in the movie would make it disappointing. It could also be who she was before she fought against the empire and later joined the rebellion.

TINFOIL THEORY CRAFTING TIME: The creators of Rebels said they were incredibly aware that Rebels and Rogue One were taking place. So - depending on Jyn's age in the movie (which I'm putting at mid-to-late twenties, which kinda ruins this theory but I'm gonna keep going!) maybe Season 3 of Rebels has an inquisitor who turns to the Light Side and betrays the Empire. She can't join the rebels because she doesn't believe in and refuses to use the Force because the Force is a beacon to other users (we've seen this in Rebels a couple of times and could make the debate that it's how Vader knew Luke and the rebels were going to Endor in RotJ). Five years pass, and she then gets picked up by the rebels and decides "what the heck," only to find herself actually believing in what they're fighting for. She survives the movie, and ends up marrying Luke.

Then again, if I can come up with this, I sure as heck hope Lucasfilm have something more interesting planned (and I'm pretty sure Gareth Edwards said there'd be no Force Users in the movie; that doesn't mean characters CAN'T use the Force, simply that they won't (or at least won't be Jedi)).

 

The only thing is the trailor saying she was alone from 15, and listing all her crimes against the Empire, "Forging Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest." So it doesn't appear as though she worked for the Empire, but I guess it's possible this could be a cover story.

I'm not sure, but I thought it was said no Jedi? So it's possible there could be Force users, just not Jedi, perhaps? Maybe we'll see some more Force users that fall outside the Jedi/Sith spectrum? Or maybe not, I do seem to remember something said along the lines of the good guys will have to deal with their problems without help from those with special powers.

 

Jyn has a last name. And they've told us what it is. It's a miracle.

 

I totally get what you're saying. I'm not saying she is going to turn dark in this movie at all. I think that would give away the twist. But maybe it's foreshadowing why we don't see Jyn Erso at all in the OT... either way there is some strong resemblance.

Don't get me wrong; Agreed, I don't think she is going dark in this movie. I'm intending that this image might be a potential foreshadow of who she ends up being and why we don't see her in the OT.

True, there's no reason Lucasfilm can't come up with a clever way to explain Rey's parentage. And thank you for not taking my speculation out of context. I do think it's a disguise. I just find it interesting Lucasfilm picks one very similar to the inquisitors...

Usually I hate double agent theories, but with this movie, I feel like that could definitely work.

 

A miracle, huh, well that's catchy, she is as awesome as Rey was.

 

I don't think she belongs to the Empire or Rebellion, She is on her own side. I think she is a lot like Han Solo, a rogue, with her own best interests in mind.
She is wearing binders, as if she's a prisoner of the Rebellion, she's not going on this mission voluntarily, so Diego Luna is assigned to accompany her.

 

She won't be captured or broken just continue her will to fight for a galaxy in a dark time bringing the light of hope through her.

 

I bet when she learns more about just what the Empire has built she will start to come around and become a less reluctant hero, and eventually a full-fledged Rebel.

Perhaps Ben Mendelson tries to make her an offer? "We know you're aiding the Rebels against your will. I'd consider you a fool otherwise. Look at what we are creating. Do you really think they have a chance to survive? I know you're a survivor. So I'm offering you a chance to do just that. Agree to work for the Empire, and we'll make sure you aren't in the company of the Rebels when we obliterate them."

 

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I would have made the lead character Hispanic or Asian. Why should main female character only apply to white girls? It seems to me that minority females are championing a cause that they're not even benefiting from.

 

Not an unpopular opinion at all (at least in the circles I run in). I agree that we need female leads that aren't Caucasian, and this would have been a good place to do so.
To be honest, it's not a dealbreaker, or even much of a surprise to me, but I feel like Disney should be making more of an effort in this department.
We have Kelly Marie Tran's character coming in VIII at least, but it really would be best if there was more. I mean why is Jyn the only woman at all on the team (as far as we know)? At the very least there could have been others of other ethnicities I feel.
