It's strange to end the trailer on the ominous note of "If you continue to fight, what will you become?". We don't even know Jyn Erso so her going over to the Empire/Dark Side doesn't hold much threat than if Rey or Finn were to switch sides in Episode 8.

Exactly. Why would they even make the lead character a human? Why not a cat, a horse, a tree or...a gungan? Yes. They should definitely make a movie with a gungan as the main character so as not to discriminate all the gungans of the Earth. This sh*t has to be stopped. #Stopgungandescriminaton

couple more thought after going through the trailer shot by shot I think she is captured by the empire then freed by the rebellion (Which would explained why they have her criminal record) in the scene where she is attacking the stromtrooper it some one else who sets of the explosion & he is watching her plus you can make out that she is also caught in the explosion then the scene with her in the ship is her being transported to the rebel base.

It could well turn out that she is only meant to help advise the rebels on the theft of the DeathStar plans but when the imperials attack the base (as a criminal maybe she has a tracker implanted in her) she is kind of forced into going along with the strike team.

Rogue One has nothing to lose when they actually make Jyn Erso an imperial undercover infiltrator...Really...At least it would be something new....

I'm agree with you, but I think both Rey and Jyn are justified actress choices.

    - Rey is a Skywalker (it's the Skywalker saga, the lead is a Skywalker, period!). They could have added other DNA on the Skywalker family, for sure! but I think this movies are visual and we need to see the whole picture clearly. That's why Rey stars in a desert planet, dressing like Anakin Skywalker (slave outfit)

    - If rumors are true, Jyn is the daughter of the imperial man who builds the Death Star. If there's a "diversity exception" in Star Wars, that should be the Empire leaders. Not only white, but pale and cold. You've got black soldiers, sure, but they "hide" in a white armor. The empire represents the European fascism from the XX century, which was only won by different cultures and colors joining forces, something that Lucas cares about, as it's, again, what Red Tails talks about.

After seeing the trailer I am concerned about the script and Felicity Jones.

That "I rebel" line is just awful. It isn't helped by Mon Mothma looking like she is about to facepalm.

I don't like the way Jones delivers her lines one bit.

It possible this is leading towards a turn for her. But I took it as more an illustration of the central themes of the film. I would imagine this movie is going for the classic war theme of, when you go too far to beat your enemy, you become them.

I would imagine, the team of rebels will need to do some morally questionable things to get those plans, and the film will examine what that does to those who have to commit those acts for the greater good. I think that is what Whitaker is warning her against.

I've seen two movies featuring Felicity - The Amazing Spider-man 2 and the Theory of everything. I know, she was nominated for Theory of everything, but I wasn't impressed by her acting still. Her face is always so stiff, especially if you compare it to Daisy's. Of course, i might be wrong as those are just two movies and perhaps i should watch some more.

I thought she did a great job in Theory of Everything. I do think she was stiff, but I think that was by design. A part of her reserved character dealing with the seething frustration of her situation rather than a fault in the performance.

Its possible stiff is all she can do, but I didn't think she came off stiff in the trailer. I though she was doing tough, but there seemed to be life in her eyes underneath the controlled "I'm tough" exterior which i think worked.

I think not working in her favor was the poorly written "I rebel" line. I'm not sure anyone could sell that without giving the audience a chuckle.

I like the line. I think it adds to Jyn's character.
And I'm looking forward to find myself wrong about this whole acting thing in December.

How does it add to her character? It sounds like a teenager who won't tidy her room or do her homework. It is cringeworthy tbh

So, the situation is that she's been arrested by the rebellion. And in given circumstances by saying 'I rebel' to face of the rebel's leader she pretty much 'rebels' against the rebellion itself. It reminds of how Poe said 'who talks first?' to Kylo Ren in TFA. I liked it.

Agreed, I've always found the women quota to be ironic because it is usually only fits white women. Then again, I think quotas are stupid in general as it strays away from talent and merit. Maybe they should just have a poor orphan transgender bi-sexual native-american/latino/african/ non-force using women who abides by the true interpretation of Islam from a third world planet rebelling against the patriarchy. Then nobody feels left out.

At first, I thought that the last shot of the trailer was an obvious misdirection. However after watching it a few more times, to listen to Jyn's background and listening to Whitaker's words....I think she's either going to be an antagonist from the start, or turn.

Otherwise she's way too similar to Rey.

I had no problem with the "I rebel" line, and hokey dialogue and SW have always gone together like peanut butter and jelly. And it is part of her apparent "I don't give a crap" attitude. And I'm pretty sure that she's just in disguise during that last shot (that corridor looks a lot like the one Luke walks down in Bespin in ESB, so that could point AWAY from her being bad, if we're overanalyzing things out of context).

Umm no, one doesn't automatically equal the other. She already looks to have a very different personality than Rey does. And there are plenty of other ways to distinguish them from each other besides jumping to the most extreme, "she's evil/a traitor" option.

The marketing is positioning her as a rogue, coupled with her rap sheet and her attitude.

Meh. There have been mainstream movies and Tv shows in which there are a bunch of white male leads and the one lone female lead is a woman of color (like Star Trek......or most shows on the SyFy network). I find that scenario to be more insulting because TPTB could have easily made one of the three or so males someone who was not white but chose not to. But in a scenario like Rogue One when there is only one female among the leads why quibble if she ends up white? Since only one can be picked obviously some racial groups will be left out in terms of female representation. At least the male stars are diverse.

It seems pretty quite plausible that Jyn is being recruited into the Rebel Alliance (or into a core operation within the Rebel Alliance) during this scene, and is not yet a part of it, or a part of its central operations. The way she says "this is a rebellion, isn't it?" makes it pretty clear that she views the Rebel Alliance either from the outside as a non-member of the Rebel Alliance, or as a rogue individual Rebel, who has been operating on the ground, on the periphery, very far away from command centers and clear chains of command. This suggests that she will have an arc. From a rebel without a cause to a rebel with a cause (and perhaps to a dead rebel).
