THE CRYSTALS GREW.
Clear as ice and cold until they found the hands that waited for them, they added structure in an ordered way, one prism at a time. And while they grew, they waited.
From time to time, someone would arrive and call to them, like the harmony of a perfect song.
Each crystal had a chosen bearer, and only that bearer would hear the music and see the glow. All others would pass by, seeing nothing but more ice.
There were larger crystals, visible to all but inert unless properly calibrated, and there were tiny ones, the size of a fingernail or smaller. Even the smallest could channel power and find a bearer. All they had to do was be patient and grow.
There was no particular pattern for where the crystals might be found. There were some planets that hosted them in countless numbers, and those places were often considered holy or special. Pilgrimages were made and lessons learned and lightsabers crafted. And thus the light crystals went about the galaxy to be put to use.
Dark crystals were made, too, but not in that holy place. They were plundered from their rightful bearers and corrupted by the hands that stole them. Even rock could be changed by the power of the Force, bleeding alterations until their color was the deepest red. The balance was finely staged between the two, light and dark, and it took very little to upset it.
When the first ships appeared in the sky over a planet where the crystals grew in number, nothing seemed amiss. Ships visited the planet all the time, and crystals were taken away, but this occasion was different. There were no young bearers to hear the songs, no attentive students to learn the lessons. There was only greed and a terrible, terrible want.
The planet was ravaged, its crystals broken by uncaring hands who thought to twist them to their own uses. No more could the planet be considered a holy place, and no longer would pilgrimages be made. Instead, those who had once gone there would avoid it and despair for the loss of the crystals that once sang to them.
But in the wideness of the galaxy, there were many planets and many places where the crystals could appear. They would be harder to find, their concentration lower, but it would not be impossible for one who sought, for one who listened—for one who had learned the first lessons and had the patience to learn more.
The crystals grew, adding structure in an ordered way, one prism at a time.
And while they grew, they waited.

From what I understand from that interlude, it is the Dark Side user who chooses to plunder the crystal from its rightful owner and by doing so, it bleeds by the power of the Force.

The color depends on the owner. How Mace got his on a purple shade? I guess it was because Samuel L. Jackson, I mean, Mace Windu wanted it that way LOL.

Regarding Rey and Kylo, the lightsaber would not turn red if Rey used her hate to fight Kylo the same way it didn't change color when its rightful owner - Anakin Skywalker - turned to the Dark Side and killed the younglings and the Separatists. My guess is that the lightsaber might need to be deconstructed and the hilt changed to adapt to the Dark Side wielder.

Having said this, it would be interesting to find out how Vader got his red lightsaber after Mustafar.

Are Jedi with blue sabers more prone to being seduced by the dark side? Maybe. Maybe not. Obi-Wan and Kanan could be the exception that comes to mind.

What about the Temple Guards with yellow blades? Same thing: the color depends on the user, I guess.

For me all this seems like what Ollivander used to say: the wand chooses the wizard. (Sorry, big HP fan here )

 

i remember reading something that suggested that once made, the lightsabers stayed their original color; they aren't subject to changing color unless they are forced into a dark sider's new lightsaber. if i'm right, then the color is only determined by the person who found them, or by a dark sider corrupting them by making a new saber. anyone of any affiliation could potentially use any color lightsaber and the color would stay the same; they aren't prone to changing colors simply because someone clicked them on, i don't think.

@Dark Cutie i don't think Grievous was ever really a dark side user, more like a cyborg with implants to make it possible to go toe to toe with a Jedi.

 

Exactly! They stay whichever color they are unless they are forced to be part of a dark side's new lightsaber. If that happens, the crystal will work but this alteration will make it bleed so the lightsaber will be red.

 

THIS. And the fact that the droid moron didn't construct a single one, he used the weapons of his fallen adversaries.

 

Kylo's cross guard lightsaber is more orange than red...as in combo of red and yellow...i dunno where but i remeber a duscussion about it sometime ago...will try to find some links...

Mace Windu's was purple cuz he used both sudes of the force? Light and Dark red+blue=purple?

So the preference of the side of the Force influences what color if the lightsaber will you construct? What is the difference between blue and green or Ahsoka's silver or gold ones? Hmmm

 

It is red. If you check any merchandising product for Kylo Ren you will find there is no doubt his lightsaber is red.

No. His allegiance was with the Jedi and so far there is no canon source stating he was using both sides. Maybe the Force does not take into account any primary color combinations.

Please read the reference from Ahsoka's book above. Any dark side wielder forcing a kyber crystal will make it bleed and thus his/her lightsaber will be red. All the rest will be either blue, green, yellow or purple. About the white ones for Ahsoka, that is something that is explained in the book as well. (And it is really awesome how she gets those crystals!).

Magic the Gathering never was my cup of Cassius tea and neither are these new kaleidoscope lightsaber crystals. In the name of continuity: if Anakin's saber didn't "talk" to Luke in Star Wars, or "reach out" to him after being lost in TESB, then I don't want to know why it waited until TFA to "call" Rey. Like my fireplace dialog, some things are just too stupid to get into.... even though I wish I could just wish this all away.

But I'm just a grumpy old dark sider, so really, there's nothing to see here...
my iron lung is just expelling a ton of hot air.

On the color of kylo's lightsaber...
This is from the script:

"FINN: Rey! Rey! Rey... Rey... Oh no. Oh no no no...
Finn turns to her, afraid and concerned. But the SOUND OF KYLO REN'S LIGHTSABER moving makes Finn TURN BACK TO KYLO REN, lit by the glowing YELLOW AND RED BLADE. "

From the script to the finished product a lot of changes might occur. Here is from the junior novelisation - which it is official:

Ren appeared to rise in stature. A metallic cylinder flew into his hand. From it ignited a fiery
crimson blade. Two quarter beams formed a hilt. It was the legendary weapon of the Jedi Knights. A
lightsaber.

Without warning or sound, the man in the mask strode out from the darkness of the forest. How he
had managed to get in front of her, she could hardly guess. But she didn’t have to guess his purpose.
He ignited the long red blade of his lightsaber.

Ren activated his blade. It flickered like a sword of pure fire and cast a hot red glow on the snow.

The problem is simple, I don't like their explanation.

Its stupid. Like Jedi celibacy.

 

Good thing none of us need that to voice our opinion(s) whenever they make a craptastic corporate decision.
