    They said a couple of times that Epsiode VIII will not be affected in any way by Carrie's unfortunate passing. Also, the work on the film will be completely finished by August (Rian told so in a podcast a few weeks ago,) so it's not like they don't have enough ready footage to show us. TLJ follows closely the marketing schedule for Rogue One, so it's safe to assume that we'll get a trailer next month.

    So....
    in the BTS reel you can see both Rey and Leia on Crait. Leia looks sad in that shot, could Rey be telling Leia that Luke decided not to come back?

    Oh wow, I just assumed that was just a crew member! But yes it looks like it could be Rey. Or rather, Daisy (or her stand-in) delivering lines for Leia's close-up.

    We didn't get a D23 trailer because that wasn't ever a part of the plan, and they have long since confirmed that TLJ is not getting altered at all to accommodate for Carrie Fisher's untimely death.

    Well....
    There was a rumor I think originated from MSW that Leia gets severely injured in TLJ in an attack by the first order and falls into a coma and that Poe and Holdo fight for control of the Resistance.

    I don't think he's saying LOL LEIA DIES IT'S AMAZING IN VIII, just that this movie is an amazing place for them to be forced (by circumstance) to end the onscreen role of the character.

    Rian Johnson has said the same in other words.

    Rian Johnson: “I guess I’ll say that Carrie [Fisher] gives a really beautiful performance in the film. And, obviously we didn’t make the movie to be her final film, final Star Wars movie. Given that though, I think there are scenes that she has that are gonna mean a lot to people. And there are scenes that we have with her where now – having her, not having her around – I watch them and I think I’m just really thankful that we have that where we can give that to people. So, yeah, wraps up nicely – I don’t know, but is emotionally gives some kind of catharsis, it gives some kind of like emotional satisfaction. I think so, I really hope so. I know for me it does.” (July 15, 2017)

    There's other ways of being an amazing or emotional satisfying role for Leia...

    I think every Star Wars movie is a bit of an emotional experience for me anyways because those movies are very special and each one brings a different sort of emotion. So, I'm 100% positive that this film is going to wreck me emotionally. My best friend and I both loved Carrie because she was so outspoken about so many things, and she just embodied everything about female empowerment, both as herself and as Leia. Losing her felt like a personal loss because Princess Leia was a part of my childhood and has continued to be a huge part of my life ever since because of how important Star Wars is to me, and it would feel that way losing Mark or Harrison too. The Last Jedi is going to be hard to watch knowing it's her last film, but I really hope they do her justice and are able to bring her story to a close in a meaningful way.

    I'd love for them to use footage of her from The Force Awakens and/or The Last Jedi to create a Force ghost of her for Episode IX. I don't know that they will, but it would be really amazing to see them do that.

    If they did, though, they'd have to explain how she became a Force ghost. After they included Yoda and Obi-Wan's conversation about Qui-Gon teaching them to become Force ghosts in Revenge of the Sith, it really messed up the whole idea of Force ghosts and why Anakin becomes one in Return of the Jedi. It wouldn't be hard because they could always say that Luke taught her how to do it or something, I don't know. The Skywalker family has always been extremely strong in the Force, so maybe their strength alone allows them to survive as Force ghosts with no additional efforts. Who knows?

    I'm just praying that Leia is still very much a part of Episode IX even if she's not in it, and based on what everyone has said so far, it sounds like continuing to make her a part of the films beyond the death of Carrie Fisher and keeping her alive in memory is definitely going to be an important aspect of the last film.
