I was right in suspecting Poe's place in the story and his relationship with Leia. Very good read!

Rian Johnson: “[Leia's] character to some degree or another has been defined by loss through this whole saga, starting with the loss of her home planet. She’s just taken hit after hit, and she’s borne it, and she focuses on moving forward and the task at hand.” “No, no, no. [The Resistance doesn't replace the New Republic] not at all. [The Resistance is] a small band that’s now cut off, on its own, and hunted when the Republic is shattered. When the First Order did that hit, the Resistance is isolated, and they’re very, very vulnerable. That’s where we pick them up.” “[Leia]’s suffered quite a bit. While I was figuring out what her deal was going to be in this film, it’s one of the things I talked about with Carrie before I started writing: where the character would go.” “There’s no way that we could’ve known this would’ve been the last Star Wars movie she would be in, so it’s not like we made the film thinking that we were bringing closure to the character. But watching the film, there’s going to be a very emotional reaction to what she does in this movie.” (August 10, 2017)

Just made this photo of The General contemplating, ...

I wonder if she will have resolve or screen time or a genuine connection/conclusion with these important men in her life

I love that poster ("you cannot deny the truth that is your family"). One of the best fanmade posters I've seen!

Also, is anyone else pissed that Leia totally got snubbed in the first wave of The Last Jedi action figures? I get that there was a lot of secrecy with The Force Awakens, but pretty much every other major character gets an action figure this time around (including Snoke, although his is only available in one of the playsets being sold). You'd think, especially considering this is her final Star Wars film, they'd release more Leia/Carrie merchandise.... I'm actually really irritated by this.

They're saving it for the Christmas wave, where it will undoubtedly sell a greater number of units. Right now they're just getting the essentials out there.

It's been bothering me too. We even have Hux toys, yet he's had no marketing at all. I think when we do get Leia, we'll also get DJ and non-Lego ones of Holdo too.

I hope so! Originally, there was a rumor that Leia would be one of the 3.75" figures released in the Black Series line, but apparently that's not true (yet), so... Hopefully by the time the movie comes out, there's some more merchandise with her. I'll be disappointed if there's limited Leia merchandise like there was for The Force Awakens.
Right? Like, I don't know... Personally, I don't see how Hux could be a better seller than Leia would be. I can't see him being that appealing to kids. Not that an older Leia figure would be, but I mean, let's be real—Luke, Rey, and Kylo Ren (Finn and Poe, too, I suppose) are the big moneymakers here. I'm hoping that we do get figures for Leia, DJ, and Holdo together eventually. It's a shame there's so much secrecy surrounding this film that certain characters don't even get figures, or if they do, they're much later. I miss the Revenge of the Sith line—there were SO many characters, it was amazing. Say what you want about the prequels, but at least all of the characters (for the most part) were included in the toy lines and stuff. It just sucks that Leia is a main character and has been since the original films, yet she's totally getting ignored in the Sequel Trilogy's merchandising.

To speak completely cynically here, there's no way that a corporation like Disney isn't going to use the tragedy of Carrie Fisher's death to exploit an increased demand for Leia-based merchandise. There was already going to be an uptick in merchandise due to her increased role in the movie, but they absolutely know that they're going to move a lot of units of Leia-related material now that it's clear that this is her last movie.

Remember how much Joker-related merchandise was sold when Heath Ledger died before the release of The Dark Knight? Same principle.

i'm encouraged by the recent Walmart Funko Pop exclusive and the recent reveal of an ANH Leia for FoD.
Leia actually has more dolls than any of the other characters so far.

a lot of it comes down to marketing, as you said.
i mean, they know who they're making these toys for. kids, yeah, but also the collectors.
they just haven't quite got there that the collectors want all the characters (because the truth is, some of them don't--read the release thread and people complaining about "fringe" characters like Zuvio and whatnot).
not that Leia should be compared to a minor character (cut from the film, no less), but goes to show the range of reactions.

and don't underestimate Hux. weirdly, he has a very vocal, very dedicated fanbase.
so much so that he outstrips all other characters on one particularly prolific fanfict site (though i expect the Reylo crowd will eventually overtake him).
he was the only character i could never find in the stores.
also, he's just a safe carryover from TFA. DJ, Holdo, etc. are new, so give them time.
it looks like they went with Rose, for example, as one of the new characters instead; probably because she has a bigger role in the film.

we're all perplexed at the choices in our own way.
i sure didn't miss a TFA Snoke figure.
it was inevitable that we get one, but i likely won't buy it.
Snoke! with Force LinkTM child molestor phrases!
yay! a toy that children will love!

i'm seriously holding out hope that Hot Toys makes a TLJ Leia.
it's a long shot, but like you said, with her death now's the time to capitalize on her merchandise. : o (

I agree. As horrible as it sounds, it's true, and to be honest, I think the only reason she's gotten as much coverage as she has so far in magazines and stuff is because of her death. She's already been snubbed a lot in the marketing campaign, and I'm hoping some of that is to avoid spoilers surrounding her character, but like you said, it's inevitable for them to capitalize on Carrie's death because it's Leia's last movie.
That's true, although the Funko Pop collection seems to have a much larger variety of characters than any of the action figure lines do, unfortunately. They are making these toys for kids, but I believe I read recently that there's been a decline in Hasbro's all-around toy sales for kids. Half the time when I'm at the store, it's adults down the Star Wars toy aisle, not kids. And I'm even okay with not having every single last character (although it would be nice), but it's absolutely inexcusable to snub Leia altogether because she always has been an important character and will continue to be one in this film (perhaps more now than ever before). All we got for The Force Awakens was one figure in the 3.75" Black Series line MONTHS after the film's release. Even Han got his own figure in the basic The Force Awakens line (although he was a more major character in that film).

Yeah, I've never understood how there's such a big fan base for Hux. And I think it's really strange that we have yet to see him in pretty much anything related to The Last Jedi so far, yet he gets an action figure for this film, but someone like Captain Phasma doesn't? Granted, I can't see it being much different than the figures released for The Force Awakens, but I feel like she must have a bigger fan base (and definitely is more appealing to kids). You do bring up a good point about DJ and Holdo being new characters that some kids may not be interested in.

Oh, God, I can't stop laughing at the comment about Snoke's child molester phrases! :) That just made my day!

Anthony Daniels at Fan Expo Canada, talking about Carrie Fisher as Leia in TLJ:

“The magic of the movies is you will see her as you’ve never seen before. The other day when I was putting my voice back on [The Last Jedi], I had completely forgotten what we had shot. Suddenly in the footage that I’m watching, there she is, living forever. That’s movies for you.”
