"There is no death, there is the Force." Considering that the new canon shows that the Jedi learn even after death, Luke becoming even greater legend isn't inconceivable. I can't see JJ missing the opportunity to write for Luke, especially when Rian gave him the perfect opening: "I'll always be with you." and "See you around, kid."

Luke Skywalker must unite the Knights of Ren(kylo and his jedi friends who are dark siders with light sabers) and the new jedi(Rey and broomboy, Finn and others) to fight a ancient evil once known as the prime jedi(first jedi in history...who we know as snoke).

the decades before The Force Awakens, Luke Skywalker’s journeys to the ancient Jedi Temples led him to discovering ancient scriptures on the Origins of the Jedi and the Sith and the division between light and dark. Luke discovers the true origin of the ‘Prophecy of the Ray of Light,’ it speaks of how Light & Dark once lived in harmony and balance. A state known as ‘Ren,’ the state of ultimate balance in the Force. The true prophecy speaks of not just one but two beings that reincarnate to fight against an entity called The Ancient Fear when it rises and infects the Force. One light force user and one dark force user. Dark and Light must work together in harmony to achieve Ren, Yin & Yang. This is the infinite dual, binary nature of the Force & the Galaxy. Life and Death. Twin Suns. The hubris of the old ways of the Jedi and Sith interpreted this arrogantly and each instilled their faith solely into one being.

"The Ancient Fear" is the Prime Jedi of the First Jedi Order. The myth of the Fallen Jedi tells of a force user on an ancient Jakku, when it was lush, green and connected to the Force. He was so powerful he attempted to seize control of the Force itself and rule the Galaxy, this caused a rupture in the Force that leaks into the Galaxy and feeds the Dark side of the Force. Jakku was destroyed and turned into a wasteland, the special connection the planet had to the Force was closed shut for eternity. The Fallen Jedi destroyed his spirit and became The Ancient Fear, a cosmic force of immense power. The pure essence of the Dark side of the Force, blinding both sides and causing the eternal Galactic conflict, similar to Lucifer. The Ancient Fear leeches off the Light & Dark side of the Force feeding the entity for all eternity. The Anti-force of the galaxy

The Ancient Fear has manifested as the Sith, the Empire, the First Order and been the driving force of the eternal Galactic conflict and imbalance. an Ancient Jedi called revan from the wars of the Old Republic trapped The Ancient Fear in a tomb in the Unknown Regions. For centuries he remained dormant, until Darth Sidious felt his call. Darth Sidious set forth a plan before the birth of Darth Vader. Anakin was being groomed. Darth Sidious believed Anakin was the pure creation of The Ancient Fear. Emperor Palpatine set forth a contingency plan shortly before his death to explore the Unknown Regions and search for The Ancient Fear. Imperial loyalists and Dark side worshippers formed the mysterious Shadow Council and were instructed to excavate the tomb and perform the perverse ritual to harness the entity into a body and resurrect The Ancient Fear. The body of a respected figure from the New Republic, a force sensitive, wealthy artifact collector named Zoroaster Snoke, was chosen to lead The New Empire of the First Order and branded Supreme Leader Snoke. The unnatural dark process left Snoke with those injuries and deformities and his true life force was gone forever. The remnants of the Empire and Sith worshippers reformed into The First Order and built the most massive weapon the Galaxy has ever seen.

Once the Ancient Fear was resurrected, the Force responded by birthing the incarnation of the being of light spoken of in the Prophecy. A scavenger on the desert planet, Rey of Jakku. The Force placed the Son of the Chosen One before her path, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. Meanwhile, the birth of the being of darkness was occurring simultaneously in a much different way. From the Unknown Regions, The Ancient Fear began to awaken and groom Ben Solo from birth, in the womb, tainting his life force, the source of his conflict and pull from the light. When Ben Solo was young he previously had a casual relationship with Zoroaster Snoke when he was himself, young Ben was intrigued by all the Jedi & Sith relics he had. He was particularly intrigued by a smashed and burned helmet in a glass casing. Zoroaster Snoke wasn’t one to be bothered but he was a mentor to Ben, being force sensitive, he enjoyed Ben’s curiosity and taught him very pragmatically about the Jedi & Sith in a very subjective way. He was wealthy and scholarly and more concerned with acquiring and amassing his collection. Zoroaster dealt with shady people to obtain his relics, such as the Acolytes of the Beyond. Zoroaster disappeared for some time and Ben lost contact and started training with Luke. Leia always had a hunch about Snoke, she didn’t tell anyone. Han was gone and she didn’t think it was urgent enough to warn Luke.

Once The Ancient Fear took control of Snoke’s body his mission became easier than ever. The injured man came back into Ben’s life, recounting an attractive false tale about his deformities and grand journey exploring ancient Sith and Jedi temples. Ben was captivated. Luke wouldn’t take him on his more dangerous adventures. The final nail to the head was his revelation to Ben that he is a descendant of Darth Vader. Ben Solo felt betrayed and lied to. Snoke gifts Ben Solo the mask of Vader. He has Ben on a string. He began manipulating Ben Solo to no end, about how his family does not believe in his potential. He preaches the State of Ren to Ben, balance in the force between Light & Dark. Snoke tells Ben he is perfect because he has equal parts Dark & Light due to Skywalker blood. He preaches he is the chosen one. Snoke gives him the name Kylo Ren and tasks him with founding the new Sith Order: The Knights of Ren. However, Snoke sees his light force and knows he will have to force the darkness out himself. Snoke began to project false visions of the future not only into Ben’s head but Luke’s and his students. His influence was growing. Ben began to seduce Luke’s students behind his back and soon enough Kylo amassed followers to join the Knights of Ren. The attack on the Jedi temple occurs. Luke flees.

However, Snoke has a sinister purpose unbeknownst to any living being. The body Snoke is inhabiting is old and weak. His ultimate purpose is to find a younger, more powerful body to inhabit. The descendant of the Skywalker bloodline, Ben Solo. The Ancient Fear instinctually gravitates to the Skywalker bloodline because of it’s pure Force energy. Snoke is obsessed with the Skywalker legacy and is the true the creator of Anakin Skywalker. He wants to vanquish Luke because he believes him to be the poison that caused the fall of Darth Vader, the bad seed. Snoke’s grandest flaw is that he abuses the force. The chosen being that catalyzed the awakening of the Force. Kylo Ren and Rey of Jakku are destined to unite and bring Ren to the Force, balannce and peace to reign across the Galaxy concluding the saga of the Skywalker family.

luke must find a way for the knights of Ren and the new jedi to work together to stop him along with Rey and kylo.

he is the master of both the spiritual and material world's...able to return from the netherworld and perform feats more in line with lord of the rings than star wars. controlling the weather being among them...like the bendu.

Rey hates kylo and want to kill him and the Knights of Ren while kylo wants the same.

this is a story of forgiveness and coming together from different ideologies. the jedi and knights of ren teaming up

the chiss ascendancy, the galactic alliance(the worlds inspired by lukes sacrifice formed the galactic alliance to replace the republic, countless worlds joined), the moderate factions of the imperial remnant all go into battle against the first order....which has fallen off the deep end and pledge their allegiance to the ancient fear.

while this is happening both finn and Poe are haunted by not being able to stop the death of Leia and goes on a investigation of her death. where they discover the truth, Leia was the one who discovered the truth behind snoke, and hux silenced her by shooting her ship down. Not before Leia gave all her essence to bring luke to his final ascension...allowing luke to cross between the material and spiritual plane of existence. Luke is emotionally grieved by this because leia is now stuck in the cosmic force without her identity after death....effectively trapping her in oblivion.

The only way he can save her is to destroy snoke and bring balance to the force

this is the backdrop....not exactly the whole story. Rey and kylo and luke now must destroy snoke, Finn now must become a leader of the imperial remnant troops, Poe must confront his guilt, and rey must forgive kylo ro fufill her destiny. Luke must make amends before going back to the netherworld.

while in the ending rey and kylo's marraige with chewbacca walking rey down the aisle(effectively establishing chewie as reys father figure)and lando calrison as Finn as ben solos best man, leia and luke both watch in peace with yoda, anakin, obi wan

I think as we have already seen a Luke Kylo show down you can't really replace what they would likly have done with Leia with Luke.

For me the likely route they will go is that the big emotion scenes will be between Rey and Kylo now. Though i would like to see a Kylo Anakin encounter.

I like the idea of Luke playing around with Kylo's mind. Luke's lines at the end is the perfect segway into it. Also, the idea that Rey could sense his death, could also be a way the Luke and Rey begin a line of communication that may begin off screen, but be established by IX as small a part it would be in this last film. Then again, I'm trying not to get my hopes until I hear an official announcement that MH will return in some capacity.

I think possible force ghost appearances, along with maybe some flashback/memories from either Rey or Kylo...maybe a force umm...opening dialog? I don't know, (giggles) -just an idea. :)

My guess is that we will see quite a bit of Luke for numerous reasons. Hamill did an outstanding job portraying Luke. In TLJ he delivered his best performance as an actor yet and yes, that includes the OT. As OP mentioned now that Carrie is gone and Harrison won't return either he is the only one of the original cast which will be a big factor too. I also think that his line "See you around kid" should be taken literally. Alec Guiness had quite a bit of screen-time throughout the OT and they will probably handle Luke in a similar way in IX.

Personally I hope to see Disney put some more emphasis on the esoteric nature of the force. It would be cool to have some kind of space beyond reality where forceuser can tap into via meditation. They could also use this to surprise audiences with a return of Snoke. Since he is not a Sith he could potentially become an evil counterpart to force-ghost Luke. Snoke deliberately chose death in IX to free himself of his crippled mortal body. When Yoda set the force tree on flames in TLJ we saw a force ghost directly interact with reality for the first time in the franchise. I can only imagine the kind of havoc an evil force ghost could wreak. After all, how do you kill someone who is already dead? Unless of course you are dead as well ;) A Snoke vs Luke finale in some bizzare place beyond reality. That would certainly top the finale in TLJ.

I would love to see him as a beefed-up Force ghost. One who does something instead of just talking. We saw what Yoda did, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that Force ghost Luke could help Rey (or redeemed Ben) during the climactic fight or something like that. If I remember correctly, there was an initial idea to have Obi-Wan and Yoda help Luke at the end of RotJ, so they can draw upon it.

I had this idea recently. Imagine Rey/Ben in a situation similar to Kanan's before he died: struggling to hold something off or whatever. And then we see Luke beside her/him doing the same thing to help (and saying something wise, lol). Was he there as a ghost and really used the Force? Or was it more of a hallucination which still had a strengthening, motivational effect on the hero? Could be left unspecified.

For those who know Dragon Ball Z, I'm thinking about something like Goku helping Gohan defeat Cell. :p It's quite a powerful image.

Yeah, I don't see why he can't force project himself in the afterlife like Yoda did.

As we all know, Luke has died and passed to the Force...or did he? Were we MADE to believe that by his disappearance before our very eyes?

I'm taking into account that as Luke has managed to project his likeness to other places AND engage those that see him, I'm also beginning to wonder if he's learned to "physically" project himself away...like in order to leave Ahch-to and leave no trace of his whereabouts...until he's ready.

I've actually considered that IF he's still alive, that he will watch Rey essentially train herself, then perhaps show up to finalize her training.

    OF COURSE, I haven't dismissed that he's just "Force-Ghosty" now. :)

I'd be shocked if he doesn't appear in IX as a Force ghost. It's a no-brainer. As I've written in another thread, I want him to have a bigger role than Obi-Wan had as a ghost, but nothing too overwhelming (the new generation has to be in the spotlight this time). We saw what Yoda did, so there's a lot of possibilities with Luke. I really want him to pull something cool again. He should definitely stay officially dead, though.

Btw. how cool would it be if Force ghost Luke was in the final shot of the film? Maybe with the rest of Force ghost in a scene that would show that Rey is not alone on her journey to potentially rebuild the Jedi Order. Just an idea... ;)

I'm torn on how much I want Luke in Ep IX. Of course I want him there - I want as much as I can get for one of my childhood heroes. But I'm afraid that his presence will might overshadow everything else, and even more than a fantasy of my hero coming back and saving everyone, I want a good story.

So maybe make it like Obi-Wan and Yoda in ROTJ with one scene that really counts and a cameo near the end?

i 100% want to see Luke alive and well. as many here and elsewhere view it - Luke was treated pretty piss poor in TLJ. the only thing is - will the 'correction' or justification of keeping him alive be just as bad? as in, will it open up a new set of rules with the Force (sort of like Super Leia - except an even bigger deal or evem his new Force Power, that seemed at best inconsistent). thats the issue for me. after that, then what/how will they write him? will he be a rejuvenated Luke Skywalker, or a cautiously optimistic Luke, or even the Juke we met in TLJ?
personally, im going to be on the hunt for spoilers right up until release of IX. i cant justify seeing it unless i know theres some point to it - and whats central to that for me, is how Luke's story is concluded (Kylo's too, for that matter). i hope he can come back, have moments of importance that exemplify the Jedi Master we should have seen, but im wary.

id say Luke is going to be played super safe, though. JJ is that type of guy - im sure theres added pressure from LFL/Kennedy, too. i think that we'll get a short Force Ghost appearance, with an added Force Ghost Voiceover (right at the critical moment - sort of like Obi-Wan when Luke was prepping for the Death Star Shot) for good effect. the appearance will, i think, be played differently to expectations. Rey is now self-sustainable (somehow) and there's really no drama or tension created with Luke appearing to her. what i think will be the case is Luke will appear before Kylo. what that means will be one of two things: to distract him (again) or to sincerely talk with him about what hes become/ing, with the aim of converting him back.

Something I always wondered if anyone else picked up on. As Luke is "dying" doesn't his robes as the "fall" act like they're walking? I seriously doubt he is "alive". Considering that Yoda brought down literal lighting. I think that opens the playing field to what's capable of a Force ghost Luke.

Luke is and should be dead. At least for the sake of the story. I think originally Luke would have played a minor role in EPIX. But after Carrie's death he will have more of a role, but still not that huge. He will probably show up for Rey and and haunt Kylo.
