It could be just an innocent pun based on the image - he's in the foreground and in complete shadow... :p But well, I guess the time is right for Mark to read the script if he's in IX, so maybe it's not crazy to search for hints. Don't think they would let that slip, though.

JJ is notoriously secretive, but I don't think they'll be able to keep his casting a secret. Even if it's just a small part.

I'm sure they won't and he's going to be listed once they kick off the production and reveal the casting. It would be pretty stupid to hide him too... I mean, we all know what to expect - a Force ghost Luke. If J.J.wants to make a secret out of it then they would have to hide Mark's involvement and that would make people upset and would be just annoying because we're 95% sure he's coming back anyway...

By "slip" I meant Mark doing this on Twitter rather than waiting for the official announcement. ;) Overall, though, I don't think it's going to be a secret. There's just no point.

Are people really doubting that Luke is in IX? Of course he is. TLJ pretty much told us his return, even though it might be small (hopefully).

I suppose if they really wanted to show luke alive (properly), and give him lots of screen time, then they could structure the movie like The Godfather 2 (or was it The Godfather 3? I can’t remember) — the one where they told two stories in two different time periods, and intertwined them.

half the movie would be showing Kylo as he is now, as the bad guy, and the other half would be when he was still learning with Luke. So we’d be watching both ends of Kylos life, and how he became what he is, in one movie. Maybe they could use the opportunity to reveal some stuff about Rey’s early years as well -- maybe theres a connection with kylos early life?

It could actually be quite good - it would be a bit like the story of obi wan and his Padawan, anakin

It wouldn't be the first time he let something slip, though. One of the TLJ trailer's was teased by him when it wasn't supposed to.

and that's the bad thing, just a force ghost cameo cannot repair the damage that was done to Luke. For sure only to show how great untrained Rey is now and how much she learned from the books. :(

There was no damage done! People change. - Sometimes I wish the ST wouldn't feature the OT. All this useless nagging makes me sick. We should rather discuss about the real problems of TLJ or in general the ST.

Luke's treatment was the main problem of TLJ.

Luke Skywalker is my favorite character but there's a case his part was too big in this trilogy. The ST is about Rey, Kylo, Poe and Finn. Finn and Poe basically lost screen time in TLJ so Luke could get the time he needed. They couldn't go the Obi-Wan route after TFA. Luke's arc was brilliant. They added new depth to the character. He was my hero yet again. I'm looking forward to how he's used in Episode IX.

I disagree there were 9 billion ways they could have shown Luke, not only either Obi-Wan style or failure Luke (this shows how little work they did to develop a good story). This was a decision to make Kylo look better and to show super duper Rey without training. It failed for me completely.

sorry, I forgot to add this failed for me. I see that there is an amount of fans who like this route.

@DailyPlunge are we again starting this negative rating game? Is it not possible that we ignore each other? Or that we accept that we have different oppinion???

I want to hear Luke's third lesson in Episode IX. He can teach it to Rey when he appears to her.

Rey: "What was the third lesson you wanted to teach me?"

Luke: "The same lesson my master taught me: Failure the greatest teacher is."

    Rey: "Huh?"

Luke will be a prominent part of Episode IX. Although I think he'll haunt Kylo, more than he'll mentor Rey. Just a hunch there, but I think Ren will be obsessed with finding and converting Rey to his cause, but haunted by the fact he realizes Luke was his only real salvation and that his lack of faith in Luke led to the destruction of his parents and his general misery.

What I like about Kylo the most is he's a very regretful villain. That's a rare thing in stories catered to beta-males who want all their characters to be made of ivory or obsidian, stand tall, firmly entrenched in power and purpose but with no real humanity to them.

Star Wars has always broken that mold, what makes Vader great is not because he's omnipotent, or well-purposed, it's because he's conflicted, regretful and ultimately very sad.

If you've ever met very rich, highly ambitious people in real life, one thing you know is they are some of the most miserable, saddest people you'll ever meet. Ambition exacts a heavy toll and power, well power will make you utterly miserable and Star Wars holds this truth front and center when it weaves its tale.

We boys often fantasize about power, unfettered, unrestrained power, but it can destroy happiness and enlightenment. The saddest souls in the universe are always though who become addicted to power. And unlike a lot of other action-film franchises Star Wars holds that truth as a central pillar of their story.

@Trevor posted this over on the TLJ forum, but it works here as well.

There's been some talk of JJ retconning some of the elements of TLJ, but this seems to be the most likely change (if there are any changes).

Yeah, Luke is alive. Rian Johnson may not think so but J.J. knows so. If not, I'll be ok re-watching EPs 1-7.

"An old friend has learned the path to immortality. One who has returned from the Netherworld of the Force."

I want this to be explored... and then Luke returns, ignites the green and saves the galaxy.

It's not his to save anymore. That's the point. Luke gave the torch to a new generation of heroes.
