I think here we can discuss what Luke will do in VIII. We heard a few things about Luke from VIII, but what may be his fate? Does he leave Ach-to, does he die, or does he return to the resistance and back into the conflict? ;)

Thanks to @LadyMusashi for collecting all the facts we know until now about Luke:

"1. At the end of ROTj, Luke is 23-4 years old.

    2. Shortly after battle of Endor, Luke went on the mission to the Imperial research facility with Shara Bey, Poe Dameron's mother. They rescued two saplings of the tree that grew in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. He gave one to Shara and kept another. (Shattered Empire)

    3. Although the war is still ongoing, Luke goes away (Aftermath: Life Debt) though he had some time to show Leia some Force tricks. We will see if he shows up on Jakku for one last hurrah before the ending of the war, but considering that Norra Wexley's mission there is secret, the Republic forces would have to show up posthaste once she and her crew discover Imperial fleet there, so it's unlikely.

    4. He spend some time traveling with Lor San Tekka and exploring Jedi Temples (Databank).

    5. He completely withdrew from the public life, he is not involved in the politics of the Republic (Bloodline).

    6. After some time, he established a new Jedi Temple (burning temple are the words used in TFA script).

    7. He continued his travels with his students including Ben Solo (Bloodline).

    8. At some point, a student (we think it's Ben) turned on him and destroyed the Temple.

    9. "Those who knew him best believe he went in search of the first Jedi temple."

    10. He is found by Rey, Chewie and R2D2 on Ahch-to.

This is EVERYTHING we know about Luke after Return of the Jedi. These are the only facts that we really know. For a period of 30 years, this is basically nothing.

And I will use only two of these facts and make them match the two sides.

    Luke is not Rey's father

Luke does not participate in the public life, goes to explore Jedi Temples with the man who belongs to the Church of the Force and knows Jedi ways - he clearly chooses the monk's path, complete dedication to the Force like the Jedi of old - so he wouldn't even explore attraction and love and isn't Rey's dad.

    Luke is Rey's father

By choosing not to be part of the Republic and the public life, Luke already deviates from the Jedi that preceded him. Even before they strayed and became warriors, Jedi played an active role in the galaxy - for thousand generations they were guardians of peace and justice. Luke chooses to explore the Temples and the Force in his own way. He travels the galaxy, he is very young, what the old rules mean to him? Who's to say he didn't meet someone on the way, had a fling and fathered a child, knowingly or unknowingly?"

Luke and Rey will break their silence. They will train on Ach-to and then slaughter the KOR. Then he or they will start an adventure that will reunite the twins.

What twins ? Luke and Leia ?

Slaughtering people isn't really the jedi way ... Bad start for a training.

BTW, is Acht-To an inhabited planet ?

So far we have only seen the island, maybe there are more islands. But I guess if this is the location of the long lost first Jedi temple, there won't be many cities around. Maybe some creatures live there. ;)

Should Luke take the place of the father as the guarantor ( not sure of the word ) of the balance of the Force ?

I guess you mean the place of the 'father' from Mortis arc. Yes, maybe we will see something like that. But I hope for a better ending. ;)

TFA was the search for Luke Skywalker because Leia needed him, Rey was sent to bring him back to Leia. The question is will Luke want to return, did he want to be found. As a jedi only uses the Force for knowledge and defense, Luke will not be able to kill his nephew but will have to do what he did with his father and return him to the light.

We all know how Luke was the 'Son of Skywalker' in the OT, after what we know from 'bloodline' and the destruction of the Republic in TFA he is now perceived as the 'Son of Vader'.

I don't think Luke dies, at least not in Episode VIII (and hopefully not in the ST in general). In my mind he should be the one to re-start the Jedi Order, but I fear TPTB will leave that to another character. Along those lines I think his first focus would be to train Rey, should she ultimately want to be trained (I would guess yes), and if he decides to actively work with the Resistance, that would come secondarily.

While Luke is on his own journey as separate from the greater galaxy, it is in the best interest of the galaxy to not be ruled with an iron fist by a government led by dark side force users. To that end it would be selfish of him to strictly adhere to the "knowledge and defense only" use of his abilities. Not saying he needs to be aggressive and attack the enemy, but he can't just stand idly by and watch things go to hell when he could have helped. At some point I would guess he would emerge as a leader in the Resistance, but perhaps not in VIII, if at all.

Obviously I/we can only speculate given the little that is known of Episode VIII. As this film is said to pick up exactly where TFA left off, I wonder if things will develop within the film to the point that Luke and Rey even go back to the Resistance (at some point in the film). They may just spend most of the film on Luke's journey and with their training, until Kylo Ren finally tracks them down.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately: will we actually see Luke train Rey on Ahch-To? Or will he leave with Rey to help the Resistance immediately?

At first, I thought training Rey was a given. I expected it to be something like the first 20 minutes of Episode VIII. Now, I'm not so sure. I think the answer to this ultimately depends on a few things...

    1) What has Luke been doing on the island? Allegedly he has found the first Jedi Temple, but what has that yielded him and why has he stayed there? Assuming he has been there for awhile, that is.

    2) Is Rey important enough to be trained before joining the fray against Kylo Ren and the First Order? The easy answer is yes. But why? If she is just another force sensitive kid discovering her powers, why would Luke be interested in training her if that is essentially what he left behind after Ben Solo fell to the dark side? I think this is why Rey's lineage is significant, and she isn't just someone random.

    3) Does Luke still believe in himself and the Jedi? This may go along with the first question as well. And, if his faith is shaken so bad that he has decided to leave everything behind, what can Rey do to convince him otherwise?

Looking forward to a lot of these questions being answered in Episode VIII. And I was expecting to see a hefty dose of Jedi training, but now I'm really beginning to question that. Has anyone else had any of the same thoughts or have I just gone too far down the rabbit hole?
