I would like to point out that many of us are assuming that Luke 100% followed the Jedi teachings. As of right now there is no proof of that he has ... All we know is that he has study Jedi lore.

I understand that it is no longer cannon but the legends story for Luke in terms of marrying Mara Jade and and having a son Ben makes sense for his character... Rey being Luke's daughter makes sense for her character and the narrative.... It doesn't have to be the case. But there is a lot of reasoning behind that train of thought to support such claims.

My point is this...with what little information we currently have we can't assume anything about Luke's life in the last 30 years.

    Not true.

We can assume he didn't die in those 30 years.

I think its likely (considering his words to Rey, the name the of movie, the way Maz and Han talked about him, Snoke being worried about the Jedi returning etc...) that Luke's school was teaching new Jedi. No, those Jedi might not be carbon copies of the PT era Jedi - do they take children at birth, they only allow 1 student per master, is there a council, are they connected to the Republic, what was their role in the galaxy, can/could they get married etc.... but still Jedi.

i agree with @Canadian Ronin , you can assume a fair amount of things, but maybe not as much detail.

he definitely trained up some Jedi, including Ben Solo, that were then killed by Kylo Ren.

he definitely found the first Jedi temple, which he then seemingly kept hidden from Ben?

come to think of it, it is kinda odd that Ben and him were palling around for a while but Ben isn't aware of the location of the first Jedi temple...

Yeah there are thins that they have told us but there's details that people are assuming.... for example yes we know that Luke trained a new generation of jedi, but we don't know how much jedi philosophy was involved in that. that's what i mean by assuming... it's never told what he taught except that he was training them to be jedi. In Luke's jedi order for the old EU marriage happened and was even encouraged. we are assuming that because Luke is a jedi that it automatically means that he held all of the ideals. the truth is that we don't know how many he held to and how many he may have might have been the reason for the fall of the order. Yes there are detail of a general going on but for a thirty year span we no next to nothing in terms of detail. We only have the broad stokes of Luke's post Return of the Jedi tapestry.

I mean unit Bloodline came out we all assumed certain things about how long it was before TFA began that Ben betrayed Luke.

I am guessing that Luke did indeed start that next generation of Jedi with the tenets of the Jedi Order fully embraced. I think that is why he is where he is currently at with the Force. The sterile trappings of the Jedi Code did not train him or equip him to handle or prevent whatever went down when it was all lost.

The problem with this - how did he have a Jedi order going already? If he embraced the PT era Jedi ways of doing things he could only teach 1 student at a time. And we've seen that it takes 10-15 years of one-on-one instruction and practical experience to become a Jedi.

That means in the 30 years between RotJ and TFA Luke most likely trained 2 Jedi (he probably doesn't start as soon as RotJ is over and he probably doesn't train them in the min. possible window). At most his first student could have fully trained 1 student and be near the end of training the 2nd. Lukes second student would most likely be training his first. So was Luke's Jedi order limited to himself, 2 fully trained students of his, 1 fully trained student of his student, and 3 partial trained students? Seems a bit less impressive if thats what Kylo destroyed.

I think its much more likely that Luke ignored that rule to get the number of Jedi up quickly - and if he ignored that rule........

Agreed, I like how he handles the probing questions about what we expect from Luke in TLJ. He's been in the role a long time, experience with role.

So I read a recent theory about Luke being the real
    villain in TLJ
Although it isn't a new theory by any means.

There would be a few holes in this theory but let's say it was true. Then that would be different. No, I don't believe it, but what if it was true and how would you feel?

I don't think he'll be a villain (that would anger a lot of fans) but I could see his role as adversarial to Rey, at least for a while. I'm sure that we'll see him in the reluctant mentor role, but I think it could be even more intense in that he literally wants to end the Jedi order itself. I'd guess it'll be more tragic than villainous.

I am typically not like one of those fans, but making Luke evil or dark would decimate everything that made him great and special.

His going to the very precipice of the dark side (RotJ) and then choosing death rather than going over was not only key to Anakin's redemption, but it absolutely defined his character. An evil or dark Luke (for me) would be a major degradation of the character.

I agree. I think it could actually be really damaging to the series. I think Luke is dark enough by simply being disillusioned by the Jedi.

However, and this is even a counter point to my own previous post- I personally think that some of Han's characterizations (particularly his relationship with Leia) were directly a counter to what we might have expected following ROTJ. I wouldn't be surprised if this subversion of expectations is used again. Again, I think (and hope) Luke's disillusionment is the furthest they'll take this, but I guess we'll see soon enough.

I completely agree. Though, that dynamic with Han and Leia was at least there in TESB. He was flighty and she was duty bound. Luke going bad would be new for the character.
