    I think Luke will still be alive at the end of IX, just a hunch but the main reason Han died was because Ford didn't want to do any more films. Mark Hamill loves Star Wars so would be only too happy to continue. However, the fact he confirmed he'll be back in IX isn't confirmation of this, as Alec Guinness could attest to were he still alive.

    I wrote together a few hints why this message may not mean what it first looks like. Please don't kill me, it is just my observation and open for everyone to disagree. :)

    Reason why Mark/Luke may not be in IX++++
    1. There was one pic (from airport) where he was shaven after finishing of filming VIII=people got worried about it = from then on he magically had his beard back
    2. He made the surprise appearance at celebration and made a comment about him gone 'be prepared' and it was the way he said it. Yes he is a pro and would not just let something like that slip, except when you are very tired and exhausted and I think he was very tired at Celebration. + he made a few more like these statements there.
    3. They had the problem in TFA and that Luke would overshadow the new characters, hmmm, after training Rey, he would again overshadow ...this problem is not gone and once you see how powerful Luke is and audiences get excited for him, attention may shift to Luke and away from Rey (what they want to avoid at any circumstances)
    4. Mark may be too expensive (yes, a not so nice topic, but he said that he did not get a job for voice work because of the exact same reasons) and Disney & Co are a company..so
    5. I heard from someone that they want to give the creation of the Jedi order to Rey and Luke only as spiritual guide.
    6. How to raise the stakes for IX?

    I believe Luke will live on. He will hide himself on Dagobah or Tatooine watching over his own grandchildren in hiding for the next series. There is not much chance for the rebellion or resistance to recover by IX and not much chance of a Jedi resurgence by then either. These are the prequels to the next series much like I, II, III where prequels to ANH.

    Luke will serve as Yoda and or OB1 did as mentor while Finn, Rey, Maz and Poe carry on the Resistance and begin a new Jedi Order that is more grey than the original. Snoke and Kylo will survive and thrive as well. I suspect Kylo will venture out looking for remnants of the original Sith and return with an Army of Dark Jedi, a mix of Jedi and Sith trained Force users.

    Rey ultimately will be Qui Gon or Windu type while her children and perhaps Kylo become the future.

    I do not think Kylo ever returns from the Dark or the SIth, not this time. I think he makes it more horrible and powerful than ever.m His children however could be his redemption and downfall.

    According to the logic JJA applied to E7, there has to be an event of high emotional impact on the viewers: After Han's death, the only way to increase that would be a duel between Kylo and Luke - that Kylo wins, again. I assume that leaves a confrontation between Rey and Finn for the third part of the story.

    Almost verbatim to what I was thinking all this time man! Got to love how litigious these companies are, but yet they keep saying "we're not recycling anything" and yet the theories that seem fairly plausible get squished with gag orders pretty quick and sometimes revealed indeed true. I didn't want to believe it, part of me still doesn't want to, but its looking more and more like the new trilogy will follow the jacen/jaina narrative but with some flavor twists.

    The panel from Salt Lake comic con was great, also some little things about filming VIII, so he had a lot of night shots and he started talking about an fx scene (but stopped in time talking about it, lol).

    Luke would whipe the floor with Kylo Ren. The only way that would work would be if Luke sacifised himself like Obi wan did for him. Otherwise Luke would seem like a wimp if he lost to Kylo Ren.
