A very nice essay! I'm delighted to learn that you post here.

Your article was spot-on. I particularly appreciated your comments about Darth Vader becoming the 'Master of his Emotions.' On the forums, we spent quite a bit of time discussing Obi-wan's emotional journey over the course of the series -- but we really didn't talk that much about the Dark Lord's own evolution.

Thank you for taking the time to read it, kind sir. :) I'm hoping I can make something resembling a career out of this!

Appreciate your feedback mate, thank you so much! My posts are few and far between. I need to migrate from lurking to participating fully, always a fan of your insights though. That's right. The series really did an excellent job (imo) us in showing how both became the entities they are in ANH.

You're right - hey, that's being human - we all feel differently! I get TBOBF feeling disjointed, I just felt it was at its best when it connected with the wider established universe. Hopefully, moving forward, the little connections become even more thought out and plentiful

Well . . . that is an opinion I just cannot share Not by a long shot. Even the flaws of TBOFB cannot supersede the flaws I saw in the Sequel Trilogy.

@Rogues1138 Bro, what are your thoughts on this?
I'm like first of all, she had to bring suffering to indigenous people of whatever planet her servitude to Vader took her to. If she fell short of her loyalty to the empire by under performing her duties/ruthlessness in any way, I'm sure Vader and other Inquisitors would have immediately picked up on that and she would have sabotaged her own plan which was to attempt to gain Vader's confidence in her allowing her to draw closer to him over time.

Thanks for directing this my way @Lord Phanatic, the video is truly hypocritical; for example, Reva cuts off an elderly woman's hand and everyone is appalled. Her actions for the most part are heinous; however, the woman is still alive, for her reprehensible actions, she is considered the worst character in Star Wars.

Kylo Ren assassinates an unarmed elderly person in cold blood (Lor San Tekka is no longer with us he was murdered by Kylo Ren) when he could have interrogated him for the map he so feverishly wanted, yet the excuse that is constantly used to forgive him is that he was manipulated by Snoke, and he should be redeemed for all the bloodthirsty actions he partook in.

It all boils down to hate, how can someone condone the actions of a wicked person, Kylo Ren, and chastise, Reva, someone who has committed identical crimes?

Kylo Ren is a charismatic and a fantabulous character for a majority of individuals, Reva for some reason was instantly despised by the majority.

I will forever compare Kylo Ren to Reva because for me they are interchangeable:

Both were inducted into a Jedi Order.
Both aligned themselves to wicked enterprises for their own selfish reasons.
Both have reasons for committing acts of heinousness. (whether you agree with them or not, they have both committed heinous crimes against the Republic at large)

Kylo Ren should be redeemed and forgiven, yet Reva should be burned or hanged.

For me both characters are copacetic, villains at times make the finest characters; for example, Darth Vader.

In closing, one particular character can pillage, rampage, and be glorified, while another is constantly berated... utterly hypocritical in my book.

Disney Star Wars forewarned Moses Ingram, that this would occur, so I commend Disney Star Wars for doing so.

It's weird...Kylo Ren is equally loved/hated with amazing passion. No middle ground.

Yet...Anakin is seen with far more sympathy, despite his sins.

For me, Anakin is in the same boat as Kylo Ren, both are forgiven due to their lineage. Good parents sometime churn out or produce the worst children. If Anakin's father is indeed Palpatine, then I might be sort of wrong about that, but Kylo's parents are good: Han ( a scoundrel but still has a good heart) and Leia.

I don't hate Kylo Ren; he is cool, and troubled, emo-dark side user... :D however I had hoped his redemption arc would have been done better. The Rise of Skywalker isn't a good film but has some good parts.

On the other hand, Rey is good even-though she is Palpatine's granddaughter... an orphan who took the name of Skywalker. Rey will carry on the name of Skywalker for me; even-though, she isn't a Skywalker by blood.

I don't have any thoughts on Kylo Ren, his redemption or his ghosting.

Ben Kenobi is to blame.... because his "point of view" regarding the betrayal and murder of Father Skywalker is what set the table to begin with. Its ironic - if Ben doesn't lie to Luke, then his story falls flat.... and Kenobi looks like a jack arse for leaving his former pupil to burn to death as well as a total dumb arse for not killing the masked maniac when he found out Anakin had become Darth Vader after he smashed him the second time. Its certainly, complicated, lol....

At the end of the day, old Ben did what he had to.

    I don't hate, I appreciate.

Anakin has the benefit of his entire life's story being told, not to mention, his evil deeds were committed as Darth Vader. The very first information we get about Anakin is that he was a hero who was betrayed and killed by the evil Vader. He is a wholly different being metaphorically and physically. Once he kills* Palpatine and saves Luke, he is redeemed and dies immediately. In TPM he is shown as a victim of oppression who by chance or by fate is able to rise above and become a heroic champion for Good and Justice... He is used, lied to and manipulated toward the Dark Side. A Victim once again. Even when he commits one of the most heinous and disgusting atrocities in all of the Star Wars stories, we are left feeling some sympathy for the character.
Kylo Ren is structured similarly, except we don't get a reliable backstory to build the same sympathetic sentiment. His brooding darkness and obvious internal struggle are somewhat effective at least until he emotionally manipulates and murders Han in cold blood. (Personally there's no redemption in my view after that. Little bastard.) Ben Solo didn't have the same complete transformation into Kylo Ren that his grandfather had into Darth Vader. Even after killing Snoke, Palpatine and saving Rey, his redemption wasn't as full circle as Vader's.

Reva's redemption story is yet to be seen, yet her character seems to have done her atrocities fully aware and motivated solely by her desire for vengeance and power. We don't know exactly what happened to put her into the Inquisitorious- was she compelled to join or did she seek it?

Vader's atrocities were done out of greed and vengeance and he was fully aware.

We saw Reva and her fellow pupils fail to protect their teacher in the cowardly attack by Anakin and the clones. She was then cut down and left for dead herself. She's more sympathetic than Anakin.

And we do not see any atrocities committed by Reva. We are shown that she is motivated by her sense of abandonment by the Jedi, betrayal by Anakin, and in her own sense of failure. All of which are confused as you might expect from a child who suffered a terrible trauma and never properly matured because of it. In her mind whatever is done to punish the jedi order is fine. And while she is a tool of the regime (as she was before) she at least isn't being hunted by it and can safely plot her revenge on Anakin. Or so she thinks.

Vader is pure evil and fully enveloped by the Dark Side which is fueled by greed and vengeance. In many ways Anakin is shown as an entirely different being. Uncle Owen, Obi Wan, even Vader himself talk of Anakin as a completely separate person, a heroic Jedi who was killed by the evil Darth Vader. That, along with the suit, makes it easier for the audience to separate the two. To some extent the same is true for Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. Is Vader redeemable? No. Anakin? Maybe.

I agree, Reva has been through a horrific trauma and no doubt has just cause to seek revenge. Her character wasn't given the benefit of an evil alter-ego to blame the bad actions on. If her story is continued that could make her redemption much more meaningful and remove any need for a sympathetic view of her as was needed for both Anakin and Ben Solo.

BTW... In my opinion, neither Anakin nor Ben Solo achieved any redemption beyond a personal level. I surely doubt tales of their change of heart inspired anyone to erect statues in their honor. Their redemptions merely allowed them to die with some sense of a clear conscience.

While I liked the story and acting in general, the series for me was a letdown.
Lot of cool moments, that were for me killed by some cheap looking cinematography and weird choices.
For a few, bad looking speeders and the whole hangar on Fortress Inquisitorius, weird tunnel chase segment with chaotic, too visually dark and weird mine chase of Obi-Wan versus Darth Vader in Episode 3.
Not to mention Devastator having problem with chasing two ships at once - doesn't they have TIE Fighters on board?
Episode 1 was good intro, Episode 2 was great! And then the world started to feel really void with some wonky visuals and fluff segments.
Lot of people said, that it is maybe because of the Volume limitations, but I don't have these issues with Mandalorian for example.
Sure, it looks a bit more digital than Andor as we have a comparison now, going back to Season 1.
    But really, what went wrong?

Like overall, this series is a letdown for me and mostly because of cinematography.
It's a pitty that the movie format was canned for the sake of series, because it felt like it suffered because of the runtime and probably some budget issues.

Plus the Disney Special on behind the scenes was a waste of time.
But to be fair, Vader and Anakin segments were great and so was Leia (except for forest running), here I can say that the young actress was phenomenal when acting on lines and Ewan McGregor was stellar as always.

I'm so late but I find this show underrated. Could have been even greater and it's not among my favorite star wars shows when it could have been but still, I overall liked a lot of it and wasn't a complete waste

Agreed. This show seems to have a bad rep from what I can tell. But I don't understand it. A lot of the production staging is clunky and kind of poor, but the story itself and it's emotional delivery was totally solid to me. I liked it quite a bit.
