When the teaser came out yesterday I was really captivated by the brief imagery surrounding Ben Mendelsohn's character. I've read this forum, but never registered, because I was always the lurker type.

However, I've seen on this forum, rumor sites, etc. that he *must* be playing a Grand Admiral, however, I'd like to offer a slightly different point of view.

People say he must be a Grand Admiral because of the white uniform seen on Thrawn (and later Grand Admirals) in various EU artwork. However, if you look closely, the uniform is actually much closer to the uniform worn by Yularen in ANH - and note the black pants. With the importance given to the ISB in Rebels, I propose that Mendelsohn is actually portraying a high level member of the ISB. I propose that he is Rogue One's equivalent of Rebels' Kallus.

I note in the canon novel Tarkin the EU character of Armand Isard was brought back, and made part of the ISB, so it would certainly be cool to have an Isard as a villain given the EU history. However, it is almost certainly a character new to the canon.

I read somewhere that his insignia marked him as "fleet admiral", not a grand admiral. At least this pic would signify that.

Ben Mendelsohn's row only includes red and blue colours, whereas grand admiral would also have yellow in his insignia.

 

does anyone have a name for Ben's character yet? any chance he could be Tarkin despite the costume difference? just wondering what's up with this guy!

 

Nah...he looks too different facially from Tarkin as he would be much older than how Ben looks in this z

 

I don't think it's Thrawn or Tarkin. I think if they choose to bring in Thrawn they will stick with his blue skin and red eyes, and a lizard on his shoulders. And they would definitely get a closer look for Tarkin.

 

In my opinion a villain with a lizard on his/her shoulders would look really ridiculous in SW .

 

Not when you realize the Ysalamir protect him from force users by creating a bubble around him. I think it would look fantastic if they designed it right, like Claw petting his cat on Inspector Gadget!

More serious: From the first Trailer optics, it seems, that the casting crew did really a great job with this one. A cool imperial Player to be taken serious!

I don't think that he's Tarkin or Thrawn either, but he does look awesome. And that cape is epic. He's got to get some scenes with Vader, the visually contrast would be too cool to pass up.

 

There was that guy in the OT , Wullf Yularen, with the white uniform, wasn't he from Navel Intelligence, under Military Intelligence, in ANH? Can we infer from this that Mendlesen's new White Fleet Admiral guy heads up that division? He looks to be a bit a schemer with that face, and those plans behind him in the viewing room on the DS. He's just got the Military Intelligence superior attitude look about him, how he just strides across that battleflied and through the water like everything is beneath him. He is fast becoming the character I'm most intrigued about.
