It could be evolutionary product on that salty planet, its crystaline "furr" could be adaptation and camouflage in such world.

Its clear Porgs dont fly. Small narrow wings just like penguins(used to change direction underwater).
Short legs inapropriate to give a lift-off boost , but good as flippers.

Its a waterworld with scattered islands.

I presume they are clumsy on the island but move like rockets underwater,

And probabaly that sea monster that Rey will fight, hunts them for food...(Porgs and our kids will be delighted to see Rey going to kick ass of that old aquatic "Sheer Khan".)

 

If you look closely, the fox appears to have white hairs around the head and then crystals elsewhere. Could be something similar to how snow and ice sticks to the fur of animals or it really is a crystal fox that glows when angry and turns into a light-saber ball.

 

Yes. Considering enviromental criteria, and what we know about planets in the film, I can in this moment put that Fox only in the context of that salty planet mentioned, where the rebel base is.
Could be of course other planet we didn't heard about jet.

Or its Snoke's extragalactic puppy( gosh, its so easy to screw this film and so difficult to make it right )

 

Where can I sell my future children for all the Porg plushies?

 

They will earn piles of money for Porg puppets in the years to come, no doubt.

 

The fox doesnt looks very Star Warsy to me but...the design looks amazing. I hope this character will have some important participation in the movie.

We have Jar Jar for the PT.
Will the porgs become the hated ones for the ST?

They seem more like cute fauna that we spend a bit of time with; I doubt they'll have as much screentime as the Ewoks or Gungans, just a few cute scenes with Artoo, Chewie, and Rey. Hardly enough time to be annoying to anyone. (Hopefully!)

 

Entire that planet Ahch-To seems to have special connection to the Force.(that's why First Jedi Temple is also there).

Just my 2 cents story goes like this:

Porgs are Light side creatures in a food chain of a big bad sea Dark side monster lurking around .

Rey will have some test (tribute to Dark side cave Luke's test on Dagobah), in which she will beat that monster, or subdue it to pass the test.

And Porgs will be happy(and our kids)when she kicks ass of that beast. Porgs are great marketing move.

Everyone will need porg, squeeze porg, sleep near porg.

 

So the rumours say that Luke communicates with the Porgs. Will they things talk? are they telepathic? will we 'hear' them?
