Perhaps that is not a beak but a wing, that said... I believe you're right.
Wings are different and the bird on R2's head has a tail and legs that looks complitely different than those of the porgs.

What if the porgs are behind this all? They look cute and fluffy on the outside, but on the inside, they're sith lords.

MSW specifically said Luke will actually talk to the Porg. I'm not assuming these things talk so I think Luke's lost it.

People talk to animals all the time. If you've never talked to a dog or cat, I speculate that you might be a psychopath :)

Porg are in the middle like the bendu. Don't annoy them they will turn into a big storm and kill you.

I think the MSW story said that Luke talks to them and this makes Rey think he's crazy, but later on as she becomes more sensitive she can talk to them too.

I'd say that perhaps the porgs are the little version of the so called "sea monster" which won't be a moster but just a creature.
The other birds may have to do with the force tree.

    They are the Porgs.
We will all be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
    (wampa)
No chance against these kind of cuteness.
Scenes with them and R2-D2 will provide one of these moments that a lot of people love.

I think that some angles hide their legs as well.

I like that they are using practical effects. I've always thought even the muppets look better than CGI characters. These porgs are just like Chewy in TFA, it's so perfectly made it looks kinda fake. There is a certain amount of grit and gnarlyness in wild animals.

For me, throwing in kid-friendly creatures is an integral part, not only of Star Wars, but also of the late 70s to early 90s era in popular film of which Star Wars is a big part. Lucas and Spielberg created a new genre of its own that is now as much a part of the DNA of American movies as Golden Age musicals and films noirs: the SFX-heavy, spectacular sci-fi/fantasy family film. In Star Wars, it was there from the beginning: so many of us were kids when we first saw Star Wars that we sometimes forget that the Jawas and Cantina creatures were and are goofy, comedic creatures meant to inspire laughter and delight, even as they contribute dramatic heft to a story with epic sweep. Even Chewie! Sometimes, he's a giant badass warrior; at other times, he's a big space puppy, and Han is like that acerbic macho guy whose edges are softened by the way he talks to his fluffy dog.

Yes, it's hard to pull this off. With all the criticisms of JJ, I haven't really heard anyone say that he didn't succeed with BB-8, who embodies cuteness seamlessly integrated into the mythic sweep of Star Wars at its best. If you're skeptical whether Rian Johnson can pull off the Porgs as well as JJ did BB-8, let alone as well as Lucas and Spielberg in their prime, I totally understand (even as I remain optimistic). But if you think cute, kid-friendly elements just don't have a place in Star Wars, I'm probably going to say you don't really get what these movies have always been...
