Official Rey Episode VIII thread

To be honest I think it was J.J.'s way of doing something totally different. Obi Wan told Luke a story about Anakin, Vader and the saber then he gave it to him. J.J. did it more visually than telling.

But it was another way to get Rey take up the call to adventure and the force to use her. I don't think that the force was taking sides, per se, but it chose her to take up the mantle so to speak. I don't think there is really one answer.

Also it doesn't speak her name. Obi Wan does.

 

When I was posting I was not actually talking about sides to be fair. I was merely talking about the narrative of why it happened and to why we are at this point now. Also with the voice to me anyway obi wan is dead, he is at one with the force and there are many voices in the vision only one happens to speak directly. Was there a reasoning behind that or was it just creative licence. To me this flashback was the most important part of the film and I don't understand why certain parts of fandom just plainly ignore it. Am not talking about this thread to be fair, but it is something across a lot of social media and I find it a bit strange. I also find it strange that something that is supposed to be personal to Rey but it gets hijacked and it's all about another character and I am like, the hell?
Am I watching a totally different film.

Perhaps it's me and I'm missing something but all I know if your not going to include it the film it's not going to make much sense.

 

According to Rian, the way the characters will develop is by putting them through the hardest things and see how they deal with it.

With Rey, what might this be?

 

Loss of her parents.

 

maybe only the feared loss of 1 parent.

 

Rey's test
-Finding out her brother is the villain
-Finding out her father is dead, killed by her brother
-Finding out her mother has been captured by the First Order?

 

I for one really REALLY, cannot wait to see the scene where Ray finds out Ben is her brother, that's going to hit like a truck!

The opposite of the Luke scene where he realises Leah is his sister. I only hope Daisy can do as sincere a job of that as Mark did in ROTJ. I love that scene!

Embracing her destiny. While she goes to Luke, it feels/seems like she's still hesitant. She only fought Kylo to protect Finn and herself. She knows she needs to go to Luke but she did run away after seeing the Force Vision. She still has to fully embrace what she is and her role in the galaxy, which I feel will be hard for her.

Other than that I would believe that it's forgiving and befriending Kylo. While I'm in the camp that doesn't believe they're related, I find she would find it a little difficult to forgive the man who murdered her newly framed father figure/someone she looked up to.

 

If Rey is the reincarnation of anakin, and the saber called to her, why did nothing call to anakin? Surely the force "intervened " before. This isn't the only time time it's been out of balance. How many before? What are those stories?

 

This question taps into my issues regarding Anakin's origins.
Lucas left it that Anakin was either created by the Force or the Sith. People can choose.
If he was created by the Force, then a lot of questions need answering, such as:

- How come he was born before the Force went out of balance?
- If the Force is going to intervene tot that extent then why didn't it have him born outside the gates of the Jedi Temple?!!

For me personally, the Sith creation idea always made more sense. It's a big reason why I thought Snoke would be Plagueis.
Then in the Tarkin novel it suggests his birth was a reaction to the Sith's meddling - not imbalance.

So when you think about it, either way he wasn't created to bring balance but because the Sith directly created him or because they were meddling with midichlorians.
The whole bringing balance thing then was the cause but the side effect - The Sith's actions brought about his creation but then the prophecy is separate to this.
In terms of what the Force wants - yes, it desires balance. And so it guides those that listen to it to bring this about. But the Force itself can't just create someone to bring balance. Anakin's creation was more of a reaction to the Sith than the design of a sentient power.

Anakin's power then meant that he would always have a role at the heart of galactic affairs - but the prophecy isn't a fateful thing. It was simply a prediction made by someone/thing many many years ago. A Jedi seeing a possible future. And in the end, the prediction was right. But that wasn't set in stone. Anakin's destiny was to become a Jedi and bring balance, but destinies can be accepted or rejected. In Star Wars, the way I see it, they are the things that essentially will make you happy. It's about following your bliss, as Joseph Campbell would say. And in order to find your destiny in Star Wars, as far as the Jedi go, you have to communicate with the Force.

In Anakin's case, we know that he did have dreams about becoming a Jedi and freeing all the slaves. But it isn't until he becomes a Jedi that he really can start to listen to the Force guiding him. Unfortunately for Anakin, his Dark Side gets in the way and clouds his vision. He begins to follow his fears rather than his true destiny. Anyway, for Rey I believe the saber speaks to her because it is her destiny to become a Jedi and find Luke - for whatever reason (though I highly doubt the reincarnation story). She, like Anakin, has already had Force dreams (as Kylo reveals in the interrogation scene). But why does the saber Force back thing happen? For me, this will likely have something to do with the kyber crystal amplifying the Force in some way, but really it is all about the cosmic force awakening. If we imagine that the cosmic force (the part that deals with destiny etc) being dormant like a volcano for X amount of years and then Rey's intervention on Jakku being part of a chain of events that awakens the Force (alongside the FO causing imbalance) then this moment is like the eruption of said volcano. It's a burst of energy that has been built up for many years, revealing to Rey her destiny.

So I don't think Rey has been "born to bring balance", but rather she has been born with (for whatever reason) great power and the thing that would make her most happy (her destiny) is to find Luke and become a Jedi. And so the saber calls to her to reveal this. And it's done in a way we haven't seen before because it is a unique situation - the cosmic force has been dormant for many years.

 

Aristic fan impression of Rey under the orbs from the sizzle wheel description. I wonder what is happening with Rey with the hand thing also? I think she maybe feeling Kylo and the KoR landing and its all vibration of the ship. But I would have to see the scene properly to give a honest taking of the shot. The ship arriving thing is just a plain guess.

 

What will be Rey's greatest challenges? hmmm

Possibly:
-coming to terms with her heritage whatever that may be and how that will influence or NOT influence who she will become
-coming to terms with her power with the Force
-how will she use the force
-accepting she may be the one to stop Kylo Ren and Snoke.. restoring the galaxy.
-something related to what happened at Luke's temple that will affect her directly
