I just realized that Dave Filoni apparently visited the set in Ireland - could it be that he was there to oversee the filming of this scene, since these same orbs of light appeared both in The Clone Wars and in Rebels?

Yeah they probably are. You never know they may also be something new but I think it is these lights from the cartoons.

Daisy Ridley swaps lightsabres for swords in Claire McCarthy's new film Ophelia

It's rarely easy getting established as a filmmaker. But with a bold new take on Shakespeare's most famous play starring Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts and Clive Owen, it seems Australian director Claire McCarthy's career is finally getting traction.

Best known for The Waiting City, a 2009 drama that had Radha Mitchell and Joel Edgerton as parents adopting a child in India, she is preparing to shoot Ophelia in Prague in May. It tells the story of Hamlet from the point of view of his ill-fated potential wife. "It's faithful to the original Hamlet in many ways but we're retelling it from her point of view," McCarthy says from the Czech Republic. "It's a mythic retelling – a drama with a lot of action and a lot of edge-of-your-seat elements to it."

The breakout star of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ridley plays Ophelia, with George MacKay (Captain Fantastic) as Hamlet, and Watts and Owen as his parents, Gertrude and Claudius. McCarthy believes Ridley will show how talented she is in a world of swords rather than lightsabres.

"She's the real deal," she says. "She's just very present and open and collaborative. I think she's a star."

McCarthy launched her promising directing career with the little-seen low-budget drama Cross Life in 2007 then followed up with Waiting City two years later. And while she shot a segment for The Turning (2013), it's been eight years since her last full feature film. That shows how hard it can be for an Australian filmmaker – particular a woman given just 16 per cent of the country's feature films have had female directors in the past 30 years.

"It's a real challenge trying to finance films," McCarthy says. "It's just heartbreaking on some levels how hard it is. You've really got to have all the elements in place and for people to take a leap on material, particularly if it doesn't tick a box and have everything that the film that was successful five minutes ago has."

Two years ago, McCarthy moved to Los Angeles to shoot The Personal History of Rachel Dupree, a drama about a woman fighting for survival on a ranch in the early 1900s that had Oscar winner Viola Davis producing and starring. It was fully financed and ready to shoot in Canada. But when Davis received a big offer for another role, the movie was postponed and McCarthy now hopes to shoot it in April next year. She also developed The Burning Season, about a scientist who runs into danger when she travels with her daughter to remote Madagascar to save endangered lemurs.

Between directing commercials and music videos and attempting to make films with strong female characters, McCarthy has kept busy. With support from Screen Australia she has had attachments shadowing directors on three big American television series – Ryan Murphy's Feud and American Horror Story then, joining friend and fellow Australian Cherie Nowlan, on How to Get Away With Murder.

"Television is a lot more open to all kinds of things – not just the content being bolder but also people taking a punt on female directors," McCarthy McCarthy has realised the subject of her films has to be relevant to audiences. "It has to look at the wounds of the world and be able to say something about it in a way that doesn't have to feel preachy and earnest," she says. "We're bringing something to people so they can reflect on their lives."says. "There are proportionally so many more women working in television than there are in feature films I'm sad to say."

What she learnt will prove valuable for not just two television shows she has been developing but also her films. "It's about being bold with material," she says. "Ryan's material is mainstream content but it represents new ideas about what diversity means, about relationships, about gender matters. It's a new vision of America in some very progressive way and it's done with such sleight of hand – it's actually funny and subversive."

So Daisy starts filming in May and probably through to the Autumn. So if there are reshoots they are probably on the horizon very shortly. Remember Daisy lives in London so she can probably slip under the radar with ease. Also to add, the Rey hair colour looks to be back also.

I think I'm on something here.

This is too big to be a coincidence.

Before reaching the end of the tunnel through the emperor's room, Rey has no face. She's just the light besides the mask.

Who are you ? I'm noone.

Then when she reached the light, she now has a face, she looks like Padme and Shmi. The long lost Anakin's love.

    Rey is love.

Rey is the part of Love that was tied inside Vader.

Anakin finally died through love to give birth to Rey.

Had a weird dream last night about this movie.

    - The movie didn't start with the opening crawl just a push through an asteroid field similar to the titles of Superman Returns.
    - The title came up but wasn't called The Last Jedi but rather "The Big 3".
    - Rey dies. :(:(:(

The hairstyle that Rey has in TLJ is quite popular among young women. I saw a couple of female students having it while I was on my uni's campus. I wouldn't read anything into it at all.

Not suggesting anything other than: "this is what Rey looks like with that hairstyle in moving image!"

It was a piece of fanart based on a description of the sizzle reel. This is the image:

(For the record, Rey's cloak isn't blue/cyan in the scene, it was just a lighting thing with the picture.)

I read the first few sizzle reel descriptions. Don't remember that scene though. Awesome connection between the animated world and live action if true.

I never understood why the lightsabres in Star Wars have straight beams. Real-world sabres have curved blades. Straight blades are called swords.
Therefore, I propose lightsabres should really be called lightswords.
    ;)
