    This is the same Daisy Ridley who said Rey was an ordinary character before TFA came out and was constantly downplaying Rey's role in the story. :)

    Daisy Ridley: "Well, you know, we go on a journey together, and [Han Solo]'s part of this journey. But the whole film is a journey of many people who come and go and contribute. That's why I think it's so good because it never feels like any one person's really on their own. And it always feels like an ensemble, and it always felt like a family, which is what people really connected to [on the original movies]. I really think pretty much every character in the film influences the others." (SFX magazine January 2016)

    Yeah...I’m not quite sure where some are getting the idea that Rey was presented so decisively to us all as the primary protagonist of the ST with TFA’s marketing. It just simply was not the case, and it was genuinely one of the few things I don’t think that the marketing went out of its way to hint at (the rest of the story, well...it hinted at a lot of it, let’s say that).

    It’s so weird that two years ago Daisy was virtually still unknown, and now she’s bouncing questions like she’s been at the highest level of acting, which shows a great level of maturity and level-headedness.

    I can’t wait to see what Daisy’s got to offer us with her performance as Rey in TLJ; we’re a mere three weeks away!! :D

    I wonder if Rey will wield the green light saber? Would be interesting if she did. Practice with her staff then the blue one and then Luke says, "Here is my trusty green laser sword. I didn't get my hand cut off with this one."

    Luke then proceeds to lose his other hand without the aid of his trusty green lightsaber.

    Rian Johnson: "One of the first things that [Lucasfilm President] Kathleen Kennedy told me when she asked me if I'd be interested in doing this [eighth episode movie] was that the lead character was a girl named Rey." "I was instantly into that; it just felt right. Leia was the first female figure that girls and women could look up to, and seeing how much it meant to them, Carrie Fisher was very conscious of that and held that with her. She felt a responsibility to make Leia great." "In this movie, there are a lot of really interesting strong and powerful and weak and conflicted and good and bad female characters. I got to work with a lot of amazing actresses, like Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma. There are a lot of kick-ass women in this movie, which is pretty great." (November 23, 2017) (archive)

    To clarify: I was referring to the marketing machine of TFA as a whole prior to the release of the poster, and the general audience’s perception in particular.

    Understood. I will say that I count myself as part of that group to whom it was clear very early on that Rey was the focal point of this trilogy, I'm surprised to hear that it was a question to others. If you don't mind my asking, what made you think it was about anyone else?

    To be clear, I was absolutely on the same side as you, and I imagine many others here :p i thought (I suppose, to an extent, we knew?) that Rey was the primary protagonist all along.

    What made it evident to me in particular that the GA wasn’t absolutely aware of this is when I came out of an opening weekend showing with my friends (having already watched the film myself), only to hear them, and many others, a bit confused about Finn not becoming the primary antagonist (due to him holding the lightsaber in the trailers and TV spots, being at the forefront of the first teaser for the film, having at least an equally large role in the trailers as Rey, etc.), and I also remember reading a few early reviews where the reviewer seemed genuinely surprised that Rey was the primary protagonist.

    I’m just saying that I don’t think that the general/more casual audience had it spelt out for them, in the little that they saw (the trailers and TV spots in abundance, I assume) that Rey, and not Finn, was the primary protagonist of the ST.

    Definitely made me do a double take, but I think they might be right that Disney/Lucasfilm/the trailer companies didn’t nail that message into us as hard as they could have.

    @Julius Fett, @Rayjefury:

    i had no idea who the protagonist was.
    i feel like all the product marketing i saw was about the villains. [shrug]
    at the time i was paying zero attention to Star Wars, so maybe a lot closer to a very general audience member than any fan.

    @Julius Fett @FN-3263827

    It's difficult for me to imagine anyone being confused about who the protagonist was given the teasers and the posters. If you didn't pay attention to those then I get it; then it makes sense. But if you looked at any of the marketing at all (I'm not talking about googling and going to blogs that discussed the movie just the regular marketing) it's almost impossible to fathom that it wasn't clear that Rey was going to be the protagonist. By the 2nd teaser in April of 2015, we had Luke Skywalker, by way of narration, already setting up the "is she or isn't she Luke's daughter" scenario. "The Force is strong in my family, my father has it, I have it, my sister has it... you have that power too". Even show a set of hands that look like Rey's receiving the LS (footage that ultimately didn't make it into the movie)

    No one assumed that Luke was talking to/about the Finn character. And certainly not by the time the movie poster came out could anyone suggest that they weren't sure she was the protagonist, that was October of 2015.

    this just isn't an assumption i would have made. first of all because there's no way to know who Luke is addressing in the trailer, and secondly, because i assumed TFA would be an ensemble like the OT. i've never thought of the OT as just Luke's story. and frankly, i don't think the ST is just Rey's story, but that's a matter of perspective. just because Rey has the Force doesn't mean she's better or more important than any of the other characters. just my opinion and not worth arguing about. my point is that it wasn't obvious for everyone and judging by the Finn thread, it seemed a lot of people thought Finn was going to the main protagonist.

    once again, the problem with generalizations is that they're not factual, they're experiential.
    in my experience, i might as well say no one knew Rey was the protagonist and no one cares who her parents are because i hang out with people who don't pay that much attention. they're not "fans" though they will buy tickets and go see the movie--maybe even twice if it delights them. they don't have the burden of all this investment.

    There has been some discussion on who "officially" has the Millennium Falcon now. Here's your answer.

    @Rayjefury

    For the second time: I never thought that Rey wasn’t the primary protagonist of TFA and the ST. All I’ve shared is my observation that much of the general audience weren’t aware that Rey would become the primary protagonist (and the primary Force user) in TFA based on what they’d seen of the film prior to the poster’s release (and even then, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that many didn’t know what the film’s poster looked like).

    :)

    Chewbacca is just being a good dad and dropping his baby off on her first day at Jedi daycare. It's HIS Falcon that Rey is allowed to fly when she's been a good kid and eaten all her beans and broccoli.
