Alright, so it's safe to say that people are pretty freaked out about the fiasco with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller leaving Han Solo at the tail end of production. But the good news is that there may be a capable director waiting in the wings to take over - Ron Howard - along with a second potential back-up director who is already involved with the movie.

    From Deadline:
As mentioned above, if Howard turns the offer down, then Lawrence Kasdan could take over directing. But if Howard gets the job, then he'll be the first Academy Award-winning director to handle a Star Wars project, which ought to count for something.

    UPDATE!

The Hollywood Reporter added a little more information to this situation, including another potential name for an emergency director to take over the project: Joe Johnston.
I've personally been pulling for Johnston to get behind the wheels of a Star Wars movie, but at this point I'd much rather he handle the planned movie with bounty hunters (assuming that's still on the cards). But still, I believe that he's a strong enough director to handle the project if push comes to shove.

I'll have to say that these past few hours have been pretty emotionally draining as a fan. But I think they can still get this movie right if he or some of the other picks are guiding the ship.

I thought it was weird that there were so many leaks with the film. This is a shocker, but I felt something was wrong with the production when all those car chase leaks were released.

I just listened to a live episode of the Steele Wars podcast recorded shortly after the news broke. Jason Ward of Making Star Wars called in and claimed to have heard from a source in the last couple of weeks that there were two big conflicts between Lord and Miller and Lucasfilm in the last few weeks.

The first was over a particular sequence: LF wanted the sequence to be done with a CGI character, whereas L&M wanted it to be done practically.

The second conflict brewed over time but reached a head recently: it was over L&M's directing of the actors. Kasdan was dissatisfied by L&M going off-script and having the actors improvise, and LF was of the opinion that the acting was poor.

Ward emphasized that he doesn't know how accurate these reports are, which is why he didn't report them until now, nor does he know what if anything these conflicts had to do with L&M's departure from the project. Food for thought, though...

whilst it is worrying, there is a bright side..

I want the directors coming in to have some creative control, and KK has said from the start that she wants that too. If however, LF see any of these films going in a direction that they believe is bad... then i would prefer them to stand up and make decisions.

The last thing i want is a crap film to come out, and then we start hearing crap about the director fighting LF over every single thing.

I do now worry for this film. but the bright side is that LF is being brave.. brave with the choice of directors, and brave with the decisions they clearly feel they have to make.

This experience may trigger discussions at LF about picking 'safer' directors for films moving forward.. i hope they stay brave.

It seems odd to have Ron Howard as a potential director. I think it would solve a lot of problems they have with having too many chiefs or chefs in the kitchen.

I'd say there is a chance that the second reason could be a big reason for the split. It corresponds with some of the reports that Lucasfilm and Kasdan did not like the direction the film was going.

Improv can be good in very small doses and it works in spoof/parody.

Watch the 2017 Ghostbusters reboot for why improv in a major picture is a terrible idea.
You can just feel the tension in scenes where the director said, "Okay now improvise this scene!" and it's just awkward mumbling and meaningless talk.

If this is even close to accurate, KK has done us all a great favor.

yeah i'm no director.. but i'd never tell the actors to improvise. i might say to them before production starts that if they ever think they can do the scene better in any way, then just do it when i say action.. and that i'd soon speak up if they do something horrid.

telling the actors to improvise sounds distinctly like they weren't happy with the script or screenplay and were hoping for the actors to fix it somehow.

It's trying to force something creative out of nothing.

    Ford improvised "I know"
It's two words replacing "I love you too"

    Not whole scenes.
