What makes you say that? Giacchino just used his pun-filled names on Dr. Strange without any trouble. ;)

Yeah, this movie does "deserve" something more serious than a bunch of puns, but they'd have to specifically ask him not to use them. We'll see! He didn't used to do it, and when he started, he didn't do it for every track. I'd be happy to get a soundtrack from him with regular names.

Yep....The fact that a score could be written in a month's time is pretty darn impressive. I hope the end result didn't suffer for it...

That's a great one! My turn...

    "Trouble AT-AT the Front Lines"

    I'm sure there's a better use for "AT-AT", but it's the best I got right now :p

No music thread is complete without mentioning the Star Wars Oxygen podcast. I haven't listened yet, but a new episode dropped today --

Well, if the new tracklist is real, it looks like Giacchino either knew - or was asked - not to use puns this time! I'm a little shocked, to be honest! I think it was the right call, though. I'm looking forward to the Imperial Suite now. I wonder what Williams ideas it will incorporate (for example, maybe that four-note Death Star fanfare - the one that plays before Leia and Tarkin meet?). I've heard a lot of people suggest the Imperial March shouldn't be used, since it was nowhere in A New Hope. I'm not sure how I feel. Keep it subtle and it will work, I imagine. Plus, Giacchino kind of hinted it's there, and it's been used in trailers.

@jmjawors, true point. Great podcast. One of the things I love about them is their ability to dive into the music we've heard a billion times and connect it to the other pieces we've heard a billion times. They rarely need to do any behind-the-scenes type stuff. It's certainly there when they talk about the music, but most of what they talk about is just on the basis of the music itself, which is really cool.

6 days till the next Star Wars soundtrack is out!

At last! The Star Wars saga films wouldn't be the same without him.

In other news, the Rogue One soundtrack is now available on Spotify:

I'm gonna save a proper listen till after I've seen the movie tomorrow, but opinion seems pretty divided on the end result, even if it is appropriately loyal to franchise themes. Should reviews for this soundtrack be vectored to this thread, or is it better to let them be their own thing?

They really wouldn't. However, I'm grateful that he's scoring 8 at his age. He's a trooper and he loves what he does (as if we didn't know). I'm more than satisfied that we got him back for 7 and I pray he will be back for 9. That's a whole new trilogy and after that who knows.

I loved the Giacchino score (while hated his Jurassic World work).

My answer to these questions is affected by that.

    - I would love that the approach of having an assembled universe with the new canon also applies to the music. This means, as bolt as it can sound, that Williams should use Jeddha leith motif if we ever visit Jeddha in the sequels.

    - Giacchino deserves to write Han Solo... In 2 weeks this time!! Just kidding. The contrary: he deserves to write Han Solo score in a better context.

    - New ones: Luke and Rey would be cool, as Williams did with Luke and Leia. Revisit: Rey, Kylo and Resistance probably.

When you're old, it's important to keep yourself busy because otherwise your health and mood will deteriorate. This is why John Williams is in such a great shape - he's still composing, he's still active. Looking at his schedule, he's going to be occupied until 2019 and I am sure he'll be back to score Episode IX (unless Rey is killed, what I doubt will happen.)

Most important. Trust me, I know. Our franchise will eventually pass unto others, as it currently is. I feel Disney has done a good job with continuing the SPIRIT of the movies that changed our lives. The saga continues.

Giachinno's rushed work was still so good and I left the theater with as much as three themes still playing in my head. It was that Hope motif that was tied to Jyn's character (ofc), the Krennic March (like a proto Imperial March theme!) and my absolute favorite: that calm, soothing tune that played during Chirrut's introduction scene.

It makes me hopeful about the future music of Star Wars even if it's not scored by John Williams.

I just want an official Finn theme. A theme that's exciting and easier to follow than Finn's Confession.

I think Star Wars has the best music out of any movie franchise or stand alone movie. Or at least I have never quite liked any other soundtracks as much.

There's a great article in The New Yorker by Alex Ross:

A Field Guide to the Musical Leitmotifs of “Star Wars”

"Scholars like Lehman are exulting in “The Last Jedi” because the score is full of such echt-leitmotivic moments. Williams manipulates his library of themes with extreme dexterity, often touching on a familiar motif for just a couple of bars. (Spoilers loom ahead.) In early scenes set at a remote, ruined Jedi temple, we keep hearing an attenuated, beclouded version of the Force motto: this evokes Luke’s embittered renunciation of the Jedi project. As the young heroine Rey begins to coax him out of his funk, the Force stretches out and is unfurled at length.

...Sometimes, Williams trips us up with musical red herrings. When “The Force Awakens” came out, two years ago, I noticed a vaguely menacing reference to the harmonies of Darth Vader’s march at the end of the film. Had Luke, too, gone dark? The new film tells us otherwise, but shadowy chords surround the exiled hero for much of the film, leaving us in suspense as to his intentions. Another feint comes when we meet a rebel commander played by Laura Dern. She makes a frosty first impression, and the music around her brushes against the flamboyantly sinister theme assigned to Kylo Ren. Is she up to no good? In fact, the suspicion exists mainly in the imagination of the hotheaded flyboy Poe Dameron, who will be forced to reconsider his macho bravado."

The article links to the recently updated compilation by Frank Lehman:

Complete Catalogue of the Motivic Material in Star Wars

    Heads Up, Everybody!

Rian Johnson recently announced via Twitter that, if you've bought The Last Jedi and sign up with Movies Anywhere (you can use the app or do it online), you have access to a score-only version of the whole film.

You know what that means? The whole score is now available for listening, without sound effects. Which also means that any music not on the official album or the For Your Consideration awards promo can be listened to by itself now!

Expect to see the whole score being uploaded onto Youtube now that this is available. The first scene I checked was Rey training with the lightsaber. But there are lots of cool unreleased parts. Enjoy the music. :)
