Something which has been brought up a lot of times is the lack of original planets in the new Star Wars movies. While it's fair to say that there's only so many different types of vegetation you can use, there are still a few types that hasn't been explored in the movies before. And when I'm saying original planets, I don't mean it has to be "super alien" or "super strange". I just mean instead of just making another desert or snow planet, there are actually many possibilities.

    My suggestions are:

    - A savannah planet
This hasn't been shown in a Star Wars film before, and it would actually make for a very cool and beautiful planet. Futuristic cities ala Alderaan could be situated in various locations.

    - A planet where its always foggy (doesn't have to be a forest)
This would be very interesting, it could be almost like a scary planet if they decide to make something that grinds into horror film territory.

    - A planet of mud
Imagine what would happen to a sand or earth planet if it suddenly started raining everywhere... it would be a huge mess of mud. You could have people living in houses on large piles located several feet above the mud, and all sorts of strange creatures living beneath it... And just imagine how dirty a war on this planet would be!

    - A snow planet with rivers
Something that hasn't been done before is a snow planet with a "melting" climate, resulting in vast amounts of rivers and lakes. It would make for some very beautiful imagery.

    - A planet made up of waterfalls everywhere
Imagine if Kamino had different "levels", and there were waterfalls everywhere.... Think the Niagara falls on steroids. It would be awesome.

    - A coral reef planet
Basically a planet whose ground vegetation looks like an underwater coral reef, except that its not underwater. This is probably my most "alienesque" idea, but it sure sounds amazing.

Do you have any suggestions yourself? Post them here!

I can't stand that they feel they have to create new planets every movie.

Based on your pictures though, the two water planets (one with ice) look pretty cool.

Did I say that they "have to"? Nope. I'm just saying that there are other possibilities.

That being said, there's nothing wrong if they decide to make 5 more desert planets. But it would be much more fun with others.

I didn't say anything about you, boss.

The people who make the movies seem to have fallen into this notion that you can never repeat planets and there always needs to be new ones. That's okay if you're designing action figures in the 80s, but it's not a great model for a movie. I'd rather the locations that are characters visit server purpose other than to be visually appealing.

Okay, because so far the people who make the movies seem to have fallen into this notion that you have to repeat certain planets for it to feel like "Star Wars".

I like the savannah planet idea. I've always had this image of the tall grass blowing under the night sky, stars out, and a lightsaber being wielded illuminating the setting.

Not sure where the image came from or how it was planted there, but it's stuck with me. Savannah all the way.

It would also be cool to see more 'alien' type planets, change the sky colour up a bit, take us to the 'out there' parts of the galaxy

It's actually been done in TCW. It's called Maridun and its inhabitants look like lemurs.

I've thought of an electrical planet or one with a very strong magnetic fields like Jupiter or Saturn.

That's a cool idea. Perhaps something similar to Bespin, except that the clouds are reddish and constantly emit electrostatic discharges. It would look like a planet of nightmares.

EDIT: I found some interesting examples.

If they want to have an epic fight between Jedi and Sith, this would be the perfect fit.

How about at least one planet that actually has different types of regions, with different seasons? So far we have a lot of ice worlds, volcanic fire words, forest worlds, desert worlds.

I am loving these ideas! I crave to see something different than sand, snow, cities, or forests.

I will say though it would be interesting seeing these ideas as not original planets, but as other parts of planets we have already seen, or used in the interpretation of known planets that have yet to be seen in any media. I would love to see the living planet of Zonama Sekot.

I have posted the same argument so many times... it's a problem with most of the SW worlds that as far as what is shown, all seem to be single ecosystem planets. The only hint of surface variety was the forest and snow style tundra site of the now extinct Starkiller Base and the forests, lakes and mountains of Takodana.

I don't know why people assume that all the planets in SW have a single ecosystem, just because only one is shown. Dagobah, Tatooine, Hoth, and Bespin could all have had multiple ecosystems. Nothing in canon, as far as I know, says these places all had only one. Why do people assume it? The only place in the original trilogy that I know of where a single ecosystem is explicitly suggested is where the Endor moon is called a forest moon.

    - Tatooine is shown as having both desert areas and mountain areas in ANH. Geonosis had the same in AOTC.
    - Naboo is shown as having a wide range of different landscapes in the PT: different forests, lakes, rivers, waterfall mountains, vast grasslands, the river canyon... plus we get to visit different cities and villages, not to be mention the underwater gungan city.
    - Alderaan is shown as having both lakes, green forests, mountains and snowy areas in ROTS.

Although I must say, why is it so important to be shown a planet with different ecosystems? It will just remind the audience more of Earth. I think single ecosystem planets are cool - it's what makes them feel more alien.

How about instead of a plain old standard sand planet. How about a Quicksand planet? Tread carefully, or sink in pits of death.

Also just thought of this one. A Safari planet. Where it is mainly dangerous alien animals. Could be like the plains of Africa.
