Since Anakin already believed she tried to kill him ("Liar! You brought him here to kill me!") and he believed he killed her instead ("It seems that in your rage you killed her") I can't see how Padme actually pulling a knife and trying to kill him would change Darth Vader's arc in the OT.

It could have been a helluva plot twist if Lucasfilm handled it right.

    Glad he didn't use it.

Anakin attacking Padme on account of the Dark Side would have been cheapened since it could be viewed that he was acting in self-defense if she struck first.

What is it with George Lucas and incredibly random 'dark' alternate ending pitches in the third film of his trilogies? First Luke turns evil after redeeming Vader for...some reason, and then this?

I think it's possible to be in character since Padme does have a dutiful and strong mindset as seen in Clone Wars, but I would have been very bad for RoTS. Like it's been said, the grey, confused position that Padme is put in and suffers is one of the more tragic parts, and the Anakin choking Padme part would've lost a lot of significance because Anakin would be doing it in 'self defense'.

I think it would've been a horrible idea. Thank God he didn't use it.
