I just assumed that a state funeral would be announced and Organa would make it a big deal because her babies would be reported dead.

This makes good sense to me.

When I read the ROTS novel, I was surprised by the level of detail it went into regarding just how manipulative, powerful, and dangerous Palpatine/Sidious really was. I thought he was evil in the film, but his portrayal in the book went far beyond that simple term. He was a hideous amoral monster.

In the movies, he's the bad guy, and as such, I didn't like him. But upon reading the novel, I felt a visceral hatred and disgust for the man. The kind of hatred and disgust I felt for the real life monster Amon Goeth after watching Ralph Fiennes portrayal of him in the film Schindler's List.

In the novel, Palpatines manipulation of Anakin was complete, long term, and his manipulations complex and far-reaching. Palpatine tells Anakin that he's known about Padme and him from the start, so her presence in Anakin's life was not some new thing Palpatine suddenly had to consider and deal with. He had years in which to ponder and plan her fate, and it was obvious to me that making Anakin think he killed his own pregnant wife in anger was the final push over the edge required to cause him to surrender completely to anger, self hatred, and the dark side. And, she would be a distraction Palpatine could not allow.

In an earlier chapter, after Order 66 is given, Yoda is discussing the fact with Obi-Wan that they have to kill Palpatine and Skywalker. Like in the movie, Obi-Wan says he will kill Palpatine, he cannot kill Anakin. However, Yoda not only tells Obi-Wan he is not strong enough, he makes the point of telling him he will die a horrible, cruel, and painful death if he tries to confront the Emperor.

There are tons of these sort of statements throughout the book, and it really paints the Emperor as an all-powerful nearly unstoppable force in his own right. He is a sadist, and completely devoid of anything even remotely resembling humanity.

Could he have used The Force to kill Padme from afar? I believe so. In fact, I have no doubt.

    He killed her.

I would have really liked to see more of this in the movie, but they had to deal with political aspects of a major release...and that really cost the audience something that might have saved the PT if allowed to be what it was. the clone wars cartoon covers the character development a bit better then the film in my opinion. but that could be because they get more screen time.

Well...there IS almost 48 hours of TCW material, so they certainly were able to cover quite a bit more ground.

right. i just mean that i find the characters more interesting in the series, than in the movies. I wish the movies had the opportunity to be darker.

well for the safety of the babies you would think that they would have a huge public funeral for Luke and Leia as well....but they didnt show that.

Not if the babies died before she was born. My point is you don't need a forced timeline and magic powers for the emperor to learn that Padme' was dead. It would of have been on of the lead stories on the Holonet. And as evil as Palps was the reasoning stated sounds strange to modern storytelling but fits the style of storytelling GL was aiming at which is a nod to ancient stories.

He probably would have killed her eventually, she would have been to much of that threat to be allowed to join the rebels at some stage.

Though I agree... Sometimes knowing less makes the character more intimidating or greater in the grand scheme of things... Yoda is a great example of this... The greatest part of star wars is the mystery behind the darkside and the light

In regards to Anakin's nightmares of Padme dying, I've often wondered if Palpatine somehow planted those seeds in Anakin's mind with some kind of Dark Side influence, manufacturing a self fulfilling prophecy. Which would be quite insidious.
