    Nothing?
The Avengers aren't always literally avenging.
The Navy SEALS aren't actual seals.

Rogue Squadron is just their name because of when they were founded.

    Can't avenge what isn't dead.

But seriously, they aren't. Sometimes they just eat Schwarma or have to put out a fire they started.

Going by the line of thought that Rogue One was a rogue crew that went against the decisions of their own affiliation's leadership council, if Rogue Squadron is indeed named after them it could potentially be for the same reasons. Some kind of Rebellion / Resistance special ops "we will disavow any knowledge of your existence" type of thing.

In the canon comics Rogue Squadron was named after Jyn Erso's Rogue One. Simple as that.

I would instantly agree but I am 99% sure this is a different squadron from a different era. Still most likely it's the same concept though.

Or it's just a "naming tradition lives on" kind of thing.

    Here's the teaser:

If this doesn't speak Top Gun in Space I don't know what does. I don't see it as being a film with a lot of plot or character. Just SFX and fancy flying. But 9 Fast and the Furious films have shown that there's a market for this.

Yes. A clip of an esteemed filmmaker talking about her father being a pilot and her love of Star Wars says everything you took away from it.

I'm honestly just happy we're still getting another Star Wars film at all. I'm excited for the Disney+ shows too, but the films are still special to me and I wouldn't want the shows to completely replace the films either.

Patty seems like a really humble person. Respect to her and I wish her luck directing this new film.

Personally for me if we get Rogue One style battles and feel with some Mandolarian comedy and a spaghetti western splash of flavour, it will be just what the Medical Droid ordered.

    Absolutely agree.
The time to explore new things was there. I was waiting to know more about first Jedi, first temples, first Force philosophies, not another "Rogue" pilots movie. Seems pretty unoriginal to me.
Hope the tv shows don't eclipse what movie experiences might give.

Btw, am revisiting WW right now and, sorry to say that, it's pretty, pretty bad. Have to say is not all Patty's fault, cause the script is really terrible. All dialogs seem grandiloquent speeches and there are some incosistencies betweem setpieces. And the humor? Not that clever.
But, also giving an objective opinion of my taste, visually Patty clearly overuses the CGI (for characters specially, and look ridiculous) and the shaky camera, at the point all you are watching looks improbable, fake and cheesy, not good points for SW.

I agree with your first paragraph about moving on. I was shocked and let down with Kathleen’s Rogue Squadron announcement. I do not want to make anybody on this forum feel bad or degraded if they are psyched for the movie; I simply have zero interest for the following reasons:
    1) first and foremost, I have never played the game.
    2) I feel beat over the head with X-wings and the “Rebel Alliance.
    3) I do not particularly enjoy World War II dogfight movies, and this reminds me of that.

For those who haven’t guessed by now, I am into the “meat” of the story side of SW, the cultural envelopment of worlds and how they function with each other. In short, I like to see how the galaxy and politics function. That’s why I’m in the minority and found the Galactic Senate scene in TPM more enthralling than “The Believer” of Mando Season 2 (yes, I know, I’m weird.) I do not enjoy action without set-up. That’s why I wasn’t fond of seeing The First Order destroy Hosnian Prime without getting a feel of what kind of government was lost. (I for one would be open to seeing an entire movie about Alderaan life.)

Anyways, back to Rogue Squadron. My fear is that the movie will play out to fanboy wishes and Patty Jenkins will serve the same thing that’s been on the menu since TFA: heavy usage of x-wing pilots, zipping from one planet to another without getting a feel of the “culture,” and lots of “red 5 standing by” dialogue. Again, I’m not implying this kind of stuff is bad. But it isn’t my thing. And this may be the first SW film I will not see in theaters............................. on opening night. :)
