My question with this topic is this- by the end of Episode IX, regardless of what happens with the characters, is it at all possible for there to be a lasting peace between the New Republic and the First Order?
We know that after the death of the Emperor and Vader, his heir, that the war continued until ultimately the Empire collapsed.
The New Republic is in a crippled state currently and the First Order rapidly and aggressively jumping to gain as much as they can. Regardless of what happens in the actual story of Episode VIII and Episode IX, will the war continue until either the Republic or the Order end as the Empire did before, or can a peace be maintained?
Having the story end with the victory of a fascist regime doesn't seem a likely (or wanted) outcome, yet if the First Order falls apart, what's to stop another Empire's End scenario where remnants flee and a generation later a new villainous group emerges.
In the old Legends EU, there was a time period where the Galactic Alliance and the Empire essentially co-existed with one another.
Is something like this possible between the New Republic and the First Order, or is the Order simply too fascistic to be allowed to continue?

Regime change, new leader willing to bring systems controlled by 1st Order into a new government with the Republic. Wasn't there a new empire that was not as bad with Imperial Knights who were not Jedi but were sworn to off the Emperor if he felt to the dark side.

Not a bad idea to see the two sides just co-exist similar to the Legends storyline where Luke puts Jagged Fel in charge of the Imperial Remnant. The New Republic was so divided between the Centrists and Populists that a "two-state solution" seems like the best chance for lasting peace.

    Too fascistic for sure.
Those that follow the FO do so out of greed or because they are forced to/brainwashed.
However, in order to fully defeat the FO and ensure than another Empire doesn't emerge, the good guys have to not only win the conventional war but they also have to win the ideological one. Those that serve the FO need to be shown that they're on the wrong team. It's not just about destroying everyone. It strikes me that conflict alone empowers the Dark Side. So how better to defeat the Dark Side/tame it than by winning over hearts and minds?

But really, a new Republic, a democracy, is the only real worthwhile outcome. Getting into bed with Fascists isn't a story I'd consider worth telling.

Bah use your imagination: In TLJ we learn that Rey is Palpatine's grand daughter. Luke realizes that many of the systems there were Imp sympathizers and even some of the 1st Order would prefer Sheeve's dynasty to continue. Afterall Snoke just committed an atrocity that exponentially trumped the Emperor.

Luke spends two movies fighting Snoke and arguing with Leia about a peaceful compromise of a constitutional monarchy with Empress Rey balanced by a the Senate. Maybe Kylo and the Knights of Ren serve as the new guardians.

I doubt Snoke will sign a peace treaty.

Agreed I doubt he or even Ben would once Ben kills him and takes power but it would be interesting for Luke to be proposing peace against Leia's wish. Once the evil darksiders are defeated peace would be possible.

Agreed but even if the 1st Order has new leaders and shows signs of wanting out of the fight do you think Leia wants to trust a peace accord from them. Especially if they still have demands.

Not that I think its happening I just think its a fun tangent of the Rey Palpatine line of thinking.

I hope the Empire/First Order finally end with episode 9 and we get to see new enemies that are not related to either one of them as it will be a bit boring if each new trilogy gives us another version of the Empire. I like the First Order alot but I hope they don't ruin them by overusing the same concept over and over again.

In my blunt opinion, The First Order are so hideously evil they don't deserve to exist. I even think The Sith Lords of Old (in the new canon) would agree with me, I doubt they had the technology to destroy basically a whole System of Planets, nor would they want to cuz they knew force is stronger than any superweapon. The First Order are strict adherents of the The Rule Through Fear philosophy, which is a bad governing philosophy, which is arguably what brought down The Empire. To paraphrase Thrawn, some evils have to be hunted down and oblieterated. Which is what the First Order is.
