I know it's a bit late but I was reading the recent Brisbane interview (http://bmag.com.au/your-brisbane/br...d-it-chewie-an-interview-with-peter-mayhew-2/) where he mentions Daisy. I know I shouldn't be but I'm a bit concerned about how he described Daisy on the set. Comparing her to Natalie Portman from the PT is a bit concerning. Am I reading too much into this or could this be cause for some concern over her performance??

“Daisy… was a little bit solid. More like Natalie [Portman] on the other movies [the prequels]. But I think, once she gets to see everything going on, she’s going to enjoy it, because it’s going to relax her. She’s going to be one hell of an actress. She will tell you, she will say, ‘I never thought we could do this, but now I see it’.

“When we were at Star Wars Celebration, she was completely different to how she was on set… I think she got taken aside by her agent and told not to be too stiff. So we watched her blossom, from a quiet young lady, into the girl who was there at Star Wars Celebration. She had blossomed; she was beautiful and full of personality. I think she’s got a lot of personality still to come out, and if the right movies come along, she will do very, very well.”

Why concerned, a 23 year old on the biggest movie set since decades. who wouldn't be stiff just look at the BTS stuff she laid that off pretty quick. nothing to worry about.
Recast Adam Driver and take me JJ if you want to see somebody in utter shock.

not at all. Rinzler reported she was not very nice and as very rude to kira knightley.

He is worried about her being stiff. WHY she is stiff is irrelevant isn't it?

That comparison worried me aswell when I read it. Also, everything we heard so far from the people involved with SW has been over the top positive and all about flowers and sunshine and how this will be better than ESB. So I'm not really buying this anymore untill I see the movie. The fact that Mayhew now says something that's not even necessarily positive IS worrying imo.

People are looking way too far into this. Its like folks are willing people to be awful. Whilst others can't wait to have a slap at Ridley because they are doing it already.

Well, wasn't wooden/stiff acting from Hayden and Natalie a major criticism during the PT?

It's just his opinion. No need to worry but as the original poster said...just some concern.

Like his glowing review of boyega. Thats just his view and yes it's very welcoming but I take it with a grain of salt because what may be good to Mayhew may not be good to me.

First he wasn't talking about their acting but their personalities. I believe he is trying to get across that she was too "professional" on set, as in she didn't relax around some of the cast and crew. I don't think he was warning us of her acting. I suspect Natalie Portman was that way.

Well, hopefully Daisy isn't actually like Natalie Portman cause Portman was apparently quite a prick during TPM and even made Keira Knightley cry because she once tried to talk to her.

No it was poor actor/director relationship. Jj is actually quite good to bring out the emotions in an actor. And we have some shots of her that are already quite promising.

This btw needs much more attention, that is something you don't hear that often in big productions.

The way I see it is he was talking about the attitude on set. Rey's character IS very stiff and reluctant. She was probably taking this very professionaly and did not relax very much to stay focus on her performance. She wanted to make sure she was acting ok and was probably nervous and wanted to prove herself she was at the right place.
"We saw her blossom during celebration" is proof he was talking about general attitude, not performance. He's used to Harrison Ford, the coolest guy on earth.

I know the actors are great. It was JJ's main focus the whole time.

OK. Again, I could be reading too much into this. It's not that I want/hope Daisy isn't good. I hope she's very good. I hope the movie is very good!

Whatevs, that's just a dad sticking up for his kiddo!

Seriously, Mayhew is talking about her personality and acting style...just like Boyega's and Ford's. Same context. This isn't anything about her actual performance.

Peoples assumptions seem to be taken as the truth; most people are simply misunderstood. Was Meyhew even in a scene with Portman in the PT? I love Peter Meyhew but I think he's being a little presumptuous with his comments. So daisy was a little overwhelmed at first? It's totally understandable; this is Star Wars after all. Why is that looked at as a make or break thing being an actress? Very odd comment by Meyhew.

I think guys need to relax, it's just someone's opinion.

For me, I've not yet been won over by anyone yet from the cast. But I've seen Boyega and Isaacs in other stuff, so I've got a bit more confidence. Daisy...not at all, and nothing I have seen YET from her has won me over.

People saying she showed great acting in the trailer? Erm...don't know about that. Decent, but not great or amazing. Same with everyone, nobody really leaped out from the trailer as being amazing. Like when we all saw Ledger in that dark knight teaser, it put EVEYRONE on notice.

But people should not be worried, just a bit concerned. End of the day, we shall see come December. I just think people need to realize Mayhew is free to have an opinion and should not feel the need to demean him or leap to Daisy's defense. What matters most is nobody screws up this film, because the bigger picture is Star Wars, not protecting an actor or actress.

So let's hope Boyega,Driver, Isaacs or Ridley don't screw up their roles.

I'm not so sure Rey is supposed to be super stoic. We've seen several emotional clips of her which I thought Daisy nailed. Looking out thoughtfully while working on some scavenged parts, rage while firing her pistol, intrigue when listening to Han, fear/concern while watching FO ships fly overhead, anguish when kneeled down next to someone's injured/dead body.

I'm thinking being new, she's not as gregarious on/off set as John who has had a little more experience in bigger productions.

I'm not going to read to read too much into what he said about Daisy. It is her first film and it happens to be the biggest film if the decade. Her being stiff and nervous on set is expected. I'm not to sure he was referring to her performance.

Now I am relieved to hear his comments on Boyega. Especially since he's been unfairly discredited as an actor more than Ridley when he clearly has a more impressive resume ( I really hope it's not for a particular reason). It seems that JJ and everybody who spoke on Boyega is very confident in his abilities.

Thank you! People saying Ridley is going to be great based on 2 lines and a few facial expressions are delusional. Actually you can't judge any actor based on what I seen. But I can judge previous work which is something she lacks. So it's only natural I'm more skeptical of her abilities than anyone. But I'm an optimist and I would like to think she does well but I just need to wait and see.
