Something at the end that is not the Falcon being shot at or chased by Tie Fighters, but something that makes me go;WTF did I just see and makes me talk about it endlessly

 

Would love to see the following (pulling from my response in the "Why aren't I excited for Episode 8" thread, in reference to what was lacking in the teaser):

- New characters, and fresh looks at existing characters:
While we got a glimpse of Luke in a totally different light in the teaser, the other character shots felt like stock photos from TFA outtakes (Leia is still at that table, etc), without showing us any new characters (Rose or Dern/Del Toro's characters, or minor characters like Justin Theroux), or giving us a fresh look at characters we haven't really gotten to know yet (Snoke)

- New creatures, new droids, new planets, new interiors, new ships, new gadgets, new costumes:
While we saw Crait in the teaser, we didn't really get a sense of the scale and diversity of the SW universe (no creatures or new costumes, no Casino planet or other landscapes aside from Crait and Ahch-To, no interior shots of First Order facilities or structures on other planets, not much outer space stuff), so it felt small and as if we're not really seeing anything new

- A sense of what's at stake:
While this is to be expected in a teaser, there was no sense of the character dynamics or the narrative yet, which will be the main things that power our experience of the movie

Obviously I don't want the movie spoiled, but ideally it'll convey the textures of the film and a feeling that the SW universe is opening up into something vast and exciting.

 

I don't have any precise expectations, but here's what I think we might see:
- A clear shot of Luke, perhaps saying something
- Some shots of the battle on Crait (that's for sure, but I hope they won't reveal too much)
- Something with Kylo + maybe him piloting TIE Silencer
- Canto Bight is a given (maybe even a Space Horse galloping through the streets)
- Rose and Finn interaction
- Praetorian Guards
- Some Jedi history-related stuff on Ahch-To
- Rey's training (duh)

What we are not going to see:
- Luke in action or any hint of his lightsaber or presence beyond Ahch-To
- Snoke (possible, but I'm leaning towards no)
- Surprising stuff like Force ghosts (don't know if they appear in the film, but if they do, there's no way they're giving it away in the trailer)

I'd love it if the trailer had a darker tone, not as triumphant as the TFA one and it would be amazing if they used actual John Williams score. I really don't want to see anything that would give me too much of the idea of the third act.

Just don't show anything real spoilerific like they did with TFA in a TV spot where Ren pulled the Lightsaber on Rey on Maz's planet. Stuff like that stick out cause you anticipating it to happen during the movie. I like quick out of contexts shots and dialogue that get you hyped but have no idea where to place them in the movie.

 

I agree 100%. This is exactly the way trailers should be -- provocative images/audio with an arc that doesn't necessarily convey a narrative, but an experience.

 

Still the gold standard of everything a trailer should be:

 

120 seconds of a Caretaker doing Luke's laundry and muttering under its breath about "not signing up for this."

 

just give me ambigous imagery and definitely no important plot points and big action spoilers. Everyone will riot, but I don't give a poodoo

I absolutely love that movie!

 

And please don't spend the first 80 seconds of the trailer with Luke talking slow and just showing the island. I need new stuff! Lots of new stuff.

I would be OK if there isn't another trailer. Seen enough to be excited and don't need more spoilers.

The problem is that each small thing in the trailers can become a bigger spoiler when you put it together with the rest. For example the brief shot of Finn seeing the Falcon on Crait from the TV spot gives you the info that both get to Crait eventually, which ruins possible worrying about Finn in previous scenes etc. You are constructing the structure of the film more and more in your head..
