So just noticed this. James Luceno created a droid companion to Darth Plagueis in his novel Darth Plagueis. That novel has since been classified as Legends.

BUT...he's back in Tarkin. And that's not all. A lot of the former info on Plagueis has been reintroduced in Tarkin.

It's curious. Clearly, James Luceno as a writer has a vested interest in these characters he pretty much created (with a little help from George Lucas) and I can see him wanting to keep them in the canon. But he's gone to some trouble to add this information into Tarkin - and given how much scrutiny is going on with the story group - I believe there MUST be a reason that the Darth Plagueis info and characterizations are being re-upped before Episode 7.

    What do you think?

Interesting. Darth Plagueis was a great book, and out of most of the Legends-era stuff seemed the easiest to slot into the new canon. It'd be great to see it promoted/rehabilitated to canon status, though what the likelihood of that is in practice I don't know.

I hope so, the 'Darth Plagueis' novel fits so well within the PT and the OT that it deserves to be "canon", and in my mind it will be regardless of what TPTB say.

Well it isn't now - but some of it is back in the pages of Tarkin. My next read I think.

The character was created by George Lucas as early as the first draft of Revenge of the Sith—dated April 2003—and possibly earlier than that. His story was massively expanded upon in the 2012 novel Darth Plagueis, written by James Luceno. However, that story is part of the Star Wars legends continuity, formerly known as the "Expanded Universe," and is therefore not official canon. The novel Tarkin, also by Luceno, includes a number of references to Plagueis and returns to canon certain elements introduced in the Darth Plagueis novel.

Why would they feel the need to "return" things if it wasn't important to the overall story?

I think it's fair to think that times of certain events will change in the new canon. Like when Palpatine truly did "kill" Plagueis.

Checkout what it says on the official canon Wookieepedia for Plagueis. It's been updated quite a bit lately to include a lot of new information, including some of which I believe isn't in the Tarkin novel. It's particularly curious how it refers to Plagueis and a Sith lead Empire and future tense for when Palpatine becomes elected chancellor. It wasn't the next day as mentioned in the novel about Plagueis.

Joe12Hawk and I discussed this at length when he was writing his guest Blog article. My theory is that the official announcement that Darth Plagueis' novel is canon will come as soon as TFA has been released for a little while. My reasoning is that should DP be involved in the ST in some way then Disney declaring that the novel is canon beforehand would be a HUGE tipoff that he is involved in the ST. This was they can keep it a surprise. Also, I would expect that nothing from the ST will directly contradict the novel regardless if he's NOT involved in the ST. That said, DP's meddling with immortality created Anakin so in essence DP is Anakin's father.
