    I think they are saying that all lightsabers are plasma weapons. Literal light sabers makes less than no sense.

    I dont see it as a reach. It is clearly differentiated by the labeling of Skywalker's lightsaber.

    I just don't think it's really worth a thread. These books basically make up names for useless greeblies anyways, so I wouldn't read to much into it.

    I don't think they're differentiating between the two in this case. One is entitled Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber, and the other is describing what the actual "blade" of a lightsaber is.

    Don't know if it makes any difference, but in the novelization of ROTS, the blade of Anakin's light saber is referred to as "plasma" multiple times.

    However, in the reference book Star Wars, The Ultimate Visual Guide, the special technologies entry that explains the light saber reads-

    "Universally recognized as the weapon of Jedi Knights,
    an activated light saber is a beam of pure energy that can
    deflect energy bolts and cut through almost any object"

    I dont think so. Why would they say that the Skywalker saber is a lightsaber, and the Kylo Ren blade has a Plasma blade.

    I think as a whole, the weapon is referred to as a Lightsaber, but it consists of smaller sub parts such as the hilt and, in this case, the "plasma blade(s?)".

    @Dinster beat me to it. Luke's lightsaber is describing the overall weapon, as pictured, and the plasma beam has a line drawn from the words to the blade, referring to that one specific component of the saber.

    This is official Disney merchandise, it is not a reach. Kylo's weapon is called a plasma blade, its plain as day..

    Anyway, Plasma blade? Good name.

    Ummmm... i hate to break it to you guys, but lightsabers in the new canon at least, are made of Plasma.

    As stated in the Rebels Visual Guide and Ultimate Star WArs... its been rather firmly cemented...

    They're differentiating between Luke's weapon as a whole vs THE BLADE of Kylo's weapon. C'mon guys...lightsaber blades are plasma. Use the "Google".

    Hope they aren't going to try and use real science to explain lightsabers. As mush as i liked dr michio kaku's explanation of how to build a real lightsaber i don't a rational reasoning behind them.

    nah, this just stems from writers not knowing the difference between plasma and energy and the more scifi writers rolling with it.

    No one is going to change the most recognizable name of the coolest weapon in sci-fi to "plasma blade." Its the beam that emits from the weapon.

    accept for George Lucas, who referred to them as laser swords. yeah that's technically what they are, but light saber sounds so much cooler.... and somehow that phrase slipped into the script in Ep. 1.
