Ahem, I was skimming this part of the forum, trying to find something of the plot of the next installment. Not so surprisingly, there was very little. However, I thought it would be good to have a thread on this, taking into consideration that the filming will commence in few weeks (after New Year).

To me it is clear that the next episode will deal with Rey being trained by Luke (and also, convincing Luke to come back to assist his sister in the fight against the FO). At the same time, Kylo will get additional training from Snoke, so these two story lines must be mirroring each other somehow.

Finn, I guess, would wake up from his coma. I really liked how he interacted with Poe, so I guess they would be working together. Since we witnessed the destruction of the "New Republic", I am assuming some of the work would revolve around this theme: trying to enforce the resistance, getting support from the other worlds against the onslaught of the FO.

I feel that there needs to be sort of an assault from the FO agains the Resistance, which will bring all key players together. The assault could be organised/led by Benicio del Toro, if he is the new "Thraw".

Rey and Kylo have already fought, and Rey might even feel cocky by this time, so maybe she will lose this time -- if Rey and Kylo have another duel. I do think though that there needs to be a duel: it could also be between Luke and Kylo? (In which Luke would die?)

True to its nature, there needs to be sort of a twist. We all assume that Luke is Rey's father. Maybe the twist would be that this is not the case?

Do you have any other opinions/visions how the episode 8 could play out?

I for one would like to see Snoke training Kylo. i don't think we've seen dark side training on film before other than Palpatine pushing Anakin to behead Dooku.

As much as I hate to admit it I think Luke will die. I base this on Arndt's comments about how Luke dominated the earlier drafts. Taking him out of the equation like they did with Han would help clear the board for new characters, although I hope 8 is his film like 7 was Han's

I feel like killing Luke in the next episode would really detract from TFA. We're all too amped that Luke has been found to give us only and hour or two more with him. Keeping him around for an epic ending in IX wouldn't take away from the new characters IMO.

Agreed but the thing with Luke is he can always be around as force ghost put not as potently as in physical form. Personally, for me, the more Luke the better. I guess my thought is my balancing expectations for 8.

Episode 8 should help us get the background of our new characters ( save for Snoke, probably revealed in 9). Luke will train Rey and help her discover her heritage and destiny. Likewise for Snoke/Kylo Ren. Leia's inner conflict about her son probably gets her killed by the end of the movie. Finn will join Poe Dameron and BB8 in some sort of resistance capacity( don't see him being force sensitive)

At some point in this movie though, the elephant in the room will finally have to be addressed, the force ghosts. Huge part of the movies that Disney can not simply ignore, especially if Luke dies. Rey hearing the voice of Obi-Wan in the flashback might indicate ghost Obi-Wan still has a role to play.

True! I was wondering that when I heard Obi-Wan's voice. It could be only because it did fit with the flashback scene, but it could also have an implication to the story line. I personally believe that Luke will be reluctant to get involved in "earthly" manners, and it will take some convincing from Rey (and maybe force ghosts) for him to accept his role as Rey's mentor.

We really need to see more of Phasma, as she was largely ignored in TFA. I can see the build up to a FINN/Phasma confrontation that concludeds at the end of the trilogy.

I hadn't thought of that but I think that is great point--seems like Finn and Phasma could have a great arc.

Is it just me or do I sense that Hux is in a whole lot of trouble? Watch his last scene with Snoke. Snoke barely acknowledges him. He tells him to leave starkiller base and join him, and to bring Kylo with him so he can complete Kylo's training. That seemed like an odd thing to say at that moment.

Snoke gave Hux a bit of a dressing down earlier in the film too - cutting him off mid sentence, bellowing "General!" in an angry tone.

Now, being a very strong 'Snoke is Plagueis' supporter, I believe Snoke will kill Hux as punishment for his failures, in front of Kylo Ren. The thing is, he'll resurrect him, with Kylo watching on. Not only will Kylo fully understand the unnatural abilities of the darkside, he'll want to learn this ability from Snoke for himself....completing his training. Something that even Darth Sidious didn't get to do.

I also think Luke will die as it would then take him out of the equation to allow the newcomers to battle it out in IX in the trilogies conclusion. I'm not too sure how they would kill him though, however I'm certain he will be a force ghost in order to carry on guiding Rey after training her.

    Luke trains Rey

    Snoke completes Kylo Rens training

Kylo beats Rey (possible limb chopped off)

    Snoke with Kylo kills Luke

First Order use a secret backup plan to beat the Resistance

All setting up the final movie where force ghost luke (possibly obi wan, yoda & anakin too) complete Reys training, Rey beats snoke with possible help from redeemed Ben Solo sacrificing himself, the Resistance gets final revenge on First Order.

God I hope not. There were enough parallels between TFA and ANH. I'm hopeful 8, 9, and beyond will be way more creative.

This is exactly what I was thinking! I feel that Luke will eventually die in either 8 or 9....although I do not want him to. However, like Obi-Wan says in IV, "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Obviously, same for Luke if this happens. With that being said, if this happens, then the force ghosts will have a big part in the upcoming films.

Also, I was thinking, VII was very similar to IV, so I'm wondering if the rest of the trilogy will be similar to the originals..... if so, do you think Luke will pretty much do the same as Obi-Wan and let Kylo, or whomever, strike him down?

Luke Skywalker has found his padawan. The two have begun training the only remaining hope to defeat the evil nemesis of the First Order.

Meanwhile, the First Order regroups and rebuilds after the destruction of Starkiller base.

The Resistance is also regrouping after the destruction of Hosnian Prime. They must now work under a Senate of chaos.

Some of these are no-brainers and some are my own hair brain ideas:

    • Rey's training and Kylo's knighting as a Darth
    • Rey builds her staff lightsaber
    • The Republic joins the fight against the First Order; Republic and Resistance are now synonymous
    • Luke and Rey going on an Indiana Jones type adventure looking for ancient wisdom/relic
    • No Hutts, no scoundrels - they aren't key to a plot without Han Solo
    • Phasma defects
    • Kylo kills Hux
    • Benicio del Toro plays some kind of henchman/gatekeeper to Snoke
    • Poe and Finn both in love with Rey; she rejects both
    • Snoke's big reveal
Be kind. Some of those are nuts but I think they'd be cool.

Killing Luke I believe is simply NOT possible. We can't have Rey be fully trained as a Jedi in 30 minutes like Luke. Luke needs to survive as a guide & mentor, & further in the new generation of Jedi. All in my opinion of course.

There's lots of good ideas in this thread. As well as a lot of the above, I'd like the film to start with the Resistance / New Republic attacking a First Order outpost (mirroring but the opposite to ESB). I'd like to see parallel and concurrent light / dark side training montages for Rey / Kylo (cue Rocky music). I like the idea of Snoke killing then reviving Hux to show the power of the dark side, again implying Plagueis, but they don't need to use the name to avoid being obvious. I'd like there to be a proper space battle and chase, but to be really really innovative and new / different. I expect Poe and Finn will go off on a mission, maybe with Leia and 3P0. I'd like to see a grimy street / land based foot chase, maybe a bit of detective work. Not sure what planet, maybe something familiar like Coruscant, but that was overdone during the prequels so I'm not sure. Maybe a decrepit version of Bespin, but again that might be aping ESB too much.

I want to see lots of Luke. I don't want to see him die. BUT, if he has to, I hope Disney/Lucasfilm pull one right out of left field and have him as a force ghost (or, hell, even Yoda and Obi Wan) tackle and destroy Snoke / Plagueis *while they're ghosts*. But that's probably something for Episode 9. It'd complete the circle of them becoming more powerful than any dark side user could possibly imagine (rather than just hang around as non-corporeal fonts of wisdom who don't otherwise do anything much).

I don't wanna see Luke die but i also don't want Luke to dominate the movie mainly because the torch has to be passed or is passed to the new characters. And also Mark Hamill is already 64, we don't know how physical can he get to be believable, though it's probably his stunt double doing the tough actions. I wanna see how and what Luke can teach Rey using the limited resources he has. I also hope he and Rey can continue to form the new Jedi order.

Finn will probably take over the Resistance from Leia maybe in epi 9. I mean she's also getting on the years, what better opportunity can it get to pass the torch to others? Yea so Poe and Finn going on missions should be fun.
