After seeing The Last Jedi, do you think Rian characterized Luke Skywalker well, somewhere in the middle, or poorly?

Call me crazy but I actually wanted him to be like this. A broken but yet powerful man who made a lot of mistakes. Yes, he may have tried to kill his nephew (at least at first), but good or bad decisions make/define a human being.
He may not have been the true Luke we all know and love from the OT, but 30 years have past and people change. So yes, the characterization of Luke was perfect for me.

I thought it was spot on from the point of view of someone who had failed the galaxy (in his mind) and just wanted to disappear. Shame is an incredibly motivating emotion.

Horrible, RJ should have listened to Mark Hamill, Luke considering killing his nephew and student in his sleep is completely out of character.

He was perfect. If the fans.wants to see the good Luke all they have to do is rewatch the CT.
30 years after ROTJ many things have changed. We now see that Luke is not all good, he still has fear, even thought to kill his nephew in his sleeping. That was just great, Luke after all.is human!

    Thought it was way off.

I found him throwing the Lightsaber away like that to be very jarring and odd, straight off the bat. It was symbolic in it's message to the audience to throw away their expectations for the movie, and that's exactly why it's in there, but you can set things off in a different direction and make a unique movie without affecting the continuity of a character we all love and know very well. Luke to me, is calmer, more measured and wiser than that and his now overly grumpy and impulsive nature is a theme that continued with his character throughout the movie. I mean, OT Luke was wiser and more mature than this version, even though he's much older and more experienced now. It didn't feel right and is a serious misstep, as Mark Hamill pointed out himself. They made him seem such a basic character. He went through all he did with Vader and the Emperor, saved the Galaxy.. but yet couldn't handle a failed Jedi academy and losing his nephew to the Dark side? He would have known from Vader that no one is ever beyond saving. He would have tried. He wouldn't have holed himself up as a hermit and given up. They've simplified his character. Luke should have a much deeper and nuanced backstory than this. Hamill did the best he could with the script. One of the most disappointing aspects of the movie for me. I'm not going to complain about them killing him off because at least it was done well, even if the reasons for him dying are a bit weak, and frankly they made such a mess of the character he's probably better off gone. Even so, he should probably have been kept around until early in episode 9.

It was horrible and sadly the worst possible treatment he could get. But sadly I expected something lazy as this to make Kylo more sympathetic. It is simply out of character.

I thought it was brilliant, and everything Luke says seems to come true: he truly has become wise, and I think that he’s known his fate for a long, long time.

He tells Rey that things won’t go the way that she thinks they will.
    They don’t.

He tells R2 that he’ll never leave Ahch-To. He doesn’t.

He tells Rey that he came to Ahch-To to die. He does.

Nothing Rey says can change his mind, and it logically shouldn’t. Luke saw the good in Vader, but knew that Ben was heading down the path which would bring him to where he was by the end of TLJ, so Rey telling him that Ben can be turned will, of course, have zero effect on him.

He’s broken - completely - and despite that, he still sends one final message of hope into the galaxy, because he knows that it’s what he must do. It’s his duty.

It worked for the story, and Hamill is awesome.

It just needed a bit more fine tuning. What did he see in Ben's future/mind. I did like Rey's response and thought that could have been parsed out a bit more - when she says that you didn't give him the choice. There was something more there to explore - not that it doesn't make a great speculative topic for us, lol.

yeah I was even at celebration in April and really hoped for the best, but it turned out as the worst nightmare came true. This movie really destroyed all my excitement for IX or the time between ROTJ and TFA. I have no idea how JJ can fix this. I guess this is a mission impossible.

Absolutely loved everything about him. It's a welcome challenge.

The flashback is a very dark moment, but let's not misunderstand it. Luke wouldn't kill Ben. It was a moment of instinct which instantly led to enormous shame (and eventually to Luke's withdrawal). As a plot device, it did such an amazing job at explaining what was the final straw to push Ben to the dark side.

The way I see it, Luke definitely wasn't more decided on killing him than he was on killing Vader.

It was a mistake which led to tragic consequences. It was Luke's failure, which, in a way, took him back to that moment in the Emperor's throne room. And remember what Yoda said about failures and what makes a master...

He has a lot to do, I don't know how it will go, especially with the passing of Carrie. TLJ is a farce. Looper is also farcical so nothing new there then. I just don't know what the next logical step is. I do have a faint glimmer of hope although its totally dark, that Rey usurps Kylo by beheading him and becomes empress. But that's wishful thinking on my part and tongue in cheek. Why Rian went with some of his decisions I will never understand.

I had to choose "perfect" because I believe that it is base arrogance for any of us to sit here and tell the folks that make these stories that the character is wrong. Nobody remains the same after 30+ years let alone anyone who's been through such life-altering ordeals, so it is absurd to consider we'd see the same RotJ Luke. My take on Luke is that he was the Paragon and he went out that way despite his stumbles.

As it is, I cannot think of a better way to end the character if he has to be ended. He all but ascended to Jedi godhood and went out on his terms.

I was 13 yrs old in 1977 so original SW holds special place for me.....and a huge Luke fan here....just got back from first viewing of TLJ. I was very satisfied. Agree with @dudebrohomie and @TheBBP above, shame is a very powerful emotion. On another topic, my youngest son said it best when he asked "why don't they just make hyperspace missiles? No defense against them".....

Like failular brings me back to this part of the conversation Luke had with Yoda in ESB

Luke Skywalker: I won't fail you! I'm not afraid.

Yoda: Oh! You will be. You will be.

yes, nobody remains the same in 30 years, but how many turn from good hearted and loving person to a cold kid murderer? Yes this happens, but do you really want to see this for Luke Skywalker who stood for hope in the galaxy? I don't want to see this in a fairy tale which should be an inspiration and not a desperate let down like our society is nowadays.
