By all means, just come on in :)

Felicity had so much better performances than her R1 thing...did you watch the Chalet Girl?

I dont mind digressions...just as long as posters finish the post with: "and how this relates to [enter thread topic] is...[insert some BS]" :D

Then the creator of R1 should make a movie that lasts 6 hrs or 3 R1 anotologies movies before he started killing them off...
I dunno what to tell you, and am not sure that we have any common ground to discuss if you cant feel the emotional storm raging in both characters right there on that bridge? That scene was not only AD's best performance in SW, but also Fords....counting OT as well. In my opinion, ofc :)

So....TFA was boring but not boring? I lost ya there :D R1 is ....louder...I give you that...harder to fall asleep to it then? :p

but ofcourse...opinions are to be shared...and when i share mine it is normally in the same tone as the opinion of the person I am replying to :) can you tell? :D

So the R1 director should take over and kill them all? :D

Okay...sorry for my wrong presumption. Sounded condescending :)

so here...I thought R1 was boring. In my opinion :)

(sorry...PMSing :p am a tad confrontational, can you tell? )
    --- Double Post Merged, Sep 14, 2017 ---
    Oh damn...I forgot to add....

And how that relates to my feelings about JJ directing EPIX is...well...EPIX is most def gonna be EPIC....IMO :D

She played her character well. Not sure what else did you expect her to do...
I've seen this argument regarding Dunkirk as well, but I'm afraid the people who bring this up missed the point... R1 and Dunirk were similar in terms that they didn't chose the Hollywood way of "sitting around a camp fire and talking about the characters lives, motivations, the captain pulls a picture of his familiy or kid out of his sleeve, saying that it's his last mission, he wants to go home, get retired" or some similar chlsé.
Both chose the more realistic approach of having an in medias res type of way to the conflict with little backstory. If you understand the cause of the characters, why they fight for, than you'll eventually care about them. Letting the immersion of the events talk, insted of the characters. This is a different approach, more war-like.
I'm glad you're optimistic. Sadly I can't share this feeling with you. Imo ep IX is going to be a generic action film with little to no depth, wit, or anything that would make it stand out from the monthly Hollywood blockbusters even the slightest. I'm not even sure JJ can ever answer his own "mystery boxes" (mystery box, AKA lets make other writers do the job), but I'm pertty sure JJ and Terrio don't have the depth necessary to properly finish Luke's story.

Because it was, and you were exactly right to feel 'lameness' as you say. And it's no coincidence that so many other people did as well. Evoking emotion is a surprisingly nuts-and-bolts process. The way the scene is written, the audience already gets that feeling he's going to die. There's the extreme minimum of escalation or tension.

A better way - not by any means saying "this is the way they should have..." - would have been to set it up so that Kylo somehow encounters Rey and Finn, and a firefight starts, and THEN for Han to intervene, shouting "Ben!" and then maybe Ben freezes the entire fight, maybe even his own troopers. Point being that then the audience goes "Oh, wow, he respects his dad enough to do that. Maybe Han really could talk him down."

Again this is just a minor example of how planting a seed of 'will he or won't he' affects tension and therefore resolution in this one scene.

It's largely the same thing that happened with Jurassic World. People wow and clap but in actuality the quality of execution is the bare minimum, with the end result being compensated for by - in JW's case - pure spectacle, and in TFA's case, the momentousness of the actual event (OMG HAN DIES OMG OMG OMG SO EMOTIONAL) rather than the actual execution.

better facial expressions that follow the emotion she was supposed to transfer for one...also...less slouching :)

    1. SW is a blockbuster not a Dunkirk type of a movie.
    2. My reply about screen time was to @StoneRiver comment of how Han got more of it so he was loved more...I knew I liked Han fro the moment he shot first.....didnt have to wait till TFA...same with Leia....same way I knew Im gonna like kylo from the TFA trailer...But NONE of the R1 characters with exception of K2S0 (not sure he can be considered a charachter since he is a robot) made me feel that way. Its not cuz I am incapable of that, since I did it with Han, Leia, Kylo....its not cuz I am biaesd towards a specific movie since I didnt do it with Luke, Finn, Fux etc...
One of the few things I did like about R1 was its the realistic approach...on the conflict....equating rebelion as terorists at times and empire as order amongst the chaos...just not the realistic approach, as you say on the characters. I didnt see much realism...do we even see anyone die or the camera gets of mark in the scene for all but the droid? I would deem it much more realistic if we actually saw the brutality of their deaths...

Lets judge it when we see it. JJ did an excellent job with EPVII and Im sure he's gonna do even better for EPIX. Imo :D

I think both did different things, and I enjoyed both. Han's death was very dramatic, and after four films (and an upcoming anthology entry) he's a character that I guess deserved to go out in that fashion.

The Rogue One crew made their sacrifices, and many of them died rather realistic and not quite glamorous deaths. I mean, look at Baze- he manages to take a few death troopers down with him, but he ultimately just crawls around on the beach until a random grenade detonates and kills him. Same for Bodhi- in fact, seems like grenades were R1's kryptonite.

My favorite scene of Rogue One is right after the blast hits Jyn and Cassian, and we see the radius from orbit of the planet. A sad song plays (Your Father Would Have Been Proud) before we see a shuttle heading toward the remains of the Rebel fleet. This is such a great passing of the torch moment, because we specifically don't have time to mourn our heroes. Vader is on his way to retrieve the very plans that R1 received, and as we know, we never really get a chance to look back from this point. He'll have his hallway scene, Tantive IV will escape temporarily before eventually being boarded, Luke will get the droids, Alderaan will be destroyed, Obi Wan killed, the Death Star blown up, and we'll all have our medal ceremony at the end. The torch was passed, and Rogue One was essentially forgotten- but everything they fought for payed off.

I think JJ will do a great job with more dramatic moments, and I wouldn't mind him getting just a tad grittier a la Rogue One.

After reading about Han's death I have to chime in... as an 8 year old watching the ANH trailer for the first time, Han Solo shooting the Stormtroopers in docking bay 94 was to me as a child so cool. I had to see that film, and the space wolf man(Chewbacca) was so cool to see for the first time. Its etched in my memory.

Seeing Han fall into the abyss, OMG didn't make me cry but I was angry! Kylo Ren will have to die... Seeing Han fall reminded me of Sidious falling into the abyss but instead of relief... anger... Rogue One was good too...

I think it's great that JJ is going to direct IX. JJ Abrams is a safe bet and a amazing director. Everybody should stop hating for the simmularities between VII and IV. JJ isnt stupid, he wont make IX simular too VI. VII needed to reintroduce the people to star wars, nostalgy for the old and a new story for the new fans. I think JJ will amaze us with IX, especially after writing a story with a fitting ending to RJ his daring VIII.

I can't say I'm excited about this news but at the same time I'm not disappointed. JJ Abrams did a great job of with TFA which would be number 4 on my list behind the OT, I really like that film however I do think it was a remake of ANH.

I just hope that JJ does something original for Episode 9 and that it isn't going to be another reboot!!!

I think he will do something original with IX. It won't be as crazy as what RJ is doing with TLJ, it will be safe but I think it will still be original.

TFA was a homage because it needed to bring everyone back to the OT era of Star Wars. Now that Lucasfilm is aware of the criticism with TFA and Lucasfilm are intentionally marketing TLJ as 'different' and 'shocking' you would have to be extremely dumb to remake ROTJ in full knowledge of the TFA complaints. It would be suicide.

We will get soft parallels only because this is Star Wars and George/Lucasfilm view these films as poetry. So while we might see a throne room battle and a possible redemption, I don't think we'll see a major copy like a Starkiller 2.0.

I'm definitely more comfortable with JJ directing than Trevorrow.

Kennedy and JJ aren't idiots. They'd be fully aware of the main criticism of TFA being the rehash elements. Surely they'll actively avoid going down that path again. Surely..

I'm not sure what else did you expect from a bitter, distrustful rogue with daddy issues, that wasn't already in F.J.'s play...
When Galen talked to her via hologram and when she mourned him was pretty well played too imo as well as the ending.
Dunkirk is also a blockbuster (a PG-13 to add), as well as Mad Max Fury Road. Just because it's a blockbuster dosen't mean it has to be a watered down conformist product. Especially a franchise like Star Wars with so many movies already released...
That would be rather gory, not realistic. You don't have to see the brutality to feel it. Have you seen American Psycho? Or the above mentioned Dunkirk...
Good to see you're excited. I can't say I feel the same. JJ to me is someone who's never let me up (i.e. down). Also, I think the word epic has been overused to the point it means little to nothing.
There is tension. Not because of the writing, but because the scene is executed very well.
Yes, thank you! This is why I'm saying that sometimes there is much more talent within forums than in Hollywood. Sure, doctoring a scene is easier than making it up from scratch, but still...

I can totally picture a similar version like yours in my head.
Kylo finds Rey, Finn and Chewie very fast (because he is a powerful dark side user, not an idiot). The heroes try to fight him (Finn with the saber), but Kylo defeats them with ease. He mortally wounds Finn who goes unconscious (and maybe Kylo wounds Chewie as well). He's ready to kill them all, but Han intervenes as you said by shouting "Ben!" Kylo freezes and is overwhelmed by his emotions. He pulls off his mask for the first time in the movie (because he is not an idiot to show his face to his enemies for no reason). A similar scene like in TFA happens. Han dies, but Kylo is still confused. He dosen't feel stronger. Rey and Chewie go mad. Rey grabs Luke's saber and fights the confused and overwhelmed Kylo in a short, but powerful duel. Rey wounds Kylo and has the chance of killing him, but she spares his life and escapes fast (as the collapse of the planet has begun). Chewie picks up Finn's body and runs with Rey. Kylo gets himself together, picks up his helmet and chases after them. But the planet is already collasping and he's too wounded, so he can only watch them escaping with the Falcon. He puts his mask on (symbolising that he's fully turned to the dark side).
Or something similar... I'm not a writer, but this way Han dies like a hero, Kylo still has his dignity and Rey dosen't go into a video game-esque overpowered mode...

Also, Rey sparing Kylo's life would haunt Kylo forever and for Rey would be her first step to become a jedi. As in TFA her character dosen't really develop...

Not much sticks in my mind from R1. K2S0 lines, Vader's glory endscene and this:

Jyn Erso: You lied about why we came here and you lied about why you went up alone.
Cassian Andor: I had every chance to pull the trigger, but did I?
    [looking to Chirrut and Baze]
    Cassian Andor: *Did* I?
Jyn Erso: You might as well have. My father was living proof and you put him at risk. Those were Alliance bombs that killed him.
Cassian Andor: I had orders. Orders that I disobeyed. But you wouldn't understand that.
Jyn Erso: Orders? When you know they're wrong? You might as well be a stormtrooper.
Cassian Andor: What do you know? We don't all have the luxury of deciding when and where we want to care about something. Suddenly the Rebellion is real for you. Some of us live it. I've been in this fight since I was *six* years old. You're not the only one who lost everything. Some of us just decided to do something about it.
Jyn Erso: You can't talk your way around this.
Cassian Andor: I don't have to.

I expected her to give a performance superior to his. She is the main protagonist of the movie yet I dont remember her at all. That scene...look at it closely next time. Look the difference if his expressions and hers. He feeeeeels his charachter. She...is bleak. Only in few moments in R1 a hint of similar can be seen in her performance.

SW saga and Dunkirk are not the same kind of movies. I havent seen Dunkirk but what i know from it it is not a film for kids. Nor is fury road. Btw i fell asleep during that one too. Hardy was nice in it.
R1 is watered down emotionally. TFA is not.

Perhaps you misunderstood what i meant by 'brutality of their deaths'. Or I have used a wrong word.
I meant brutality in a sense of reality. Not gore. I dont want to see brain scatered or blast...but what i remember from R1...it was more like their deaths were only hinted...no closure. No real sacrifice. No real cause of it. For it. Except the main goal of yeah they had to die to get some stupid plans. Imo...there is a huge excess expendable charachters in that movie who die for nothing. Its what together wit DJ's performance makes it...well...bleak.

If that is true then your life must be...dammit...bleak? Thats sad then. Hope you find some things in ST that you can get excited about. If not...then you can perhaps enjoy other anthologies. :)

Well, judging acting performances is subjective anyways. I thought her performance was good for the character she was playing.
If I want to criticise something, it would the be casting choice itself, not her acting. Imo a more punk-ish looking actress would've been better for the character, instead of a pretty, clear looking petite brunette...
Just like every Gareth Edwards movie, Rogue One is full of real emotions and real life themes. Loss, sacrifice, ambition, hope.
TFA is a childish flick with mostly false sentimentalism instead of real emotions. It tricked you to look like Roge One is watered down, because the characters are all directed to play overly excited. Just like every JJ movie.
What movie were you watching, seriously? Only hinted? You mean there is comming back from blowing up to pieces? Or being annihilated by a nuclear-blast like explosion? Or getting butchered by Vader?
No real cause of it? I don't even want to answer this. Watch the movie again and try to understand it this time. It's not hard.
This is where I draw the line. Speculating about my real life based only on my taste towards JJ Abrams' movies is definitely an ad hominem attack that dosen't belong to this forum.
My life is not bleak. I just don't like mediocre, rehashed and meaningless action flicks as much as you do.

I disagree with all you wrote there. But I respect your opinion without the need to cry and moan about it being different than my own. We are clearly two very different individuals :)
Sorry if you got offended but i dont know if you have the right definition of ad hominem. My bleak comment was about the sw movies and in direct response to your lack of epicness and excitment comment you yourself proclaimed you have. If you didnt want it to be addressed then you shouldnt have made it. :)
And if you chose to see it as anything else its your choice not mine and i feel not responsible for your offended feelings. Why would I?

Nobody is doing anything *to you* if they disagree with you or have views different to your own. I for example, dont feel offended by that last trashing of TFA or me personally of yours because I know my emmotions that I feel everytime I watch it are genuine and real and that is a more than enough referal for JJ as director of epix.

Also...imo....the makers of st dont owe you in particular to make st according to your specifications...and honey...considering they cast jj (who you so eagerly disaprove) for epix director is a good inclination your opinion might not be that important to them. A shock I know...but sometimes we just gotta accept we, our offended feelings...or our opinions are not that important to other people :)

Looking forward to future discussions with you :)
    Yours truly...

I'm not happy at all but I'm willing to give the guy a chance. While I disliked what he did on TFA, I want to see if after all his talk he can make an ORIGINAL SW movie.

Shocking to say the least. I was slightly put off when Jakku looked too much like Tatooine, SKB/DS, Maz castle/Cantina but after watching TFA I didn't mind, yet if he brings back an unfinished SKB in ep9 I'd be worried... but some fans are going a bit too far, give Jar jar Abrams another shot.
