JJ is not a bad director per se, but he lacks original vision. All of his directorial work is based off other's work, since they are either reboots (Star Trek), or homages (Super 8 is a homage to Spielberg's work). All of his originals screenplays from the 1990's received negative to mediocre reviews.

So, if you are OK with seeing an Episode IX which is going to be another homage to the OT - fine. Personally, I had enough of JJ after TFA.

I fee excited because jj has very good style and he kinda has thing with aliens...STAR TREK STAR WARS SUPER8. But we first have to see what Rian Johnson brings to the table.

There’s a difference between being grateful and showing an actual developed relationship.

It’s not nitpicking, it’s character consistency. Finn acts like Rey means so much to him when they just met for five minutes. Before he leaves the Cantina Substitute, he’s so emotional about Rey, saying he was set to do one thing as a storm trooper of the First Order. It’s the kind of moment you have when the characters have gone through enough turmoil to have that earned moment. Like the time Leia says I love you to Han, it’s a moment that’s earned because we see the conflict in their relationship throughout the film and it’s only when he’s about to be frozen does she confess her love.

Finn is a stormtrooper feeling ashamed of who he was but we don’t actually see it or see the conflict he has. He just says it and we are supposed to take our word for it. He spends the rest of the movie in a series of gimmicks and gags. the movie doesn’t take time to process any of his actions. Also, didn't realize First Order were desperate that they had their janitors fight in battle.

This is just my opinion. The film was enjoyable but felt too clouded in mystery boxes and ultimately kind of deflates on multiple viewings. This is just my experience watching it. I’m glad it worked for you.

With JJ directing 9 we can say bye bye to Finn being sidelined most likely
