SPECULATION (poll) Will the Stormtroopers be more dangerous?

Just let them have their moments...
I wanna see our heroes struggle at first and than just grow and learn...

 

I think they have to be better than what they were in the OT...

But having said that, the Empire's attitude toward stormtroopers was that they are expendable. And if the First Order uses the Array to decimate both their own and the Resistance fleet, perhaps it has a similar philosophy. Ultimately, the stormtroopers purpose from a storytelling perspective is to be cannon fodder, at least with respect to our key heroes. That's not to say they have to be... other movies have made the "grunt" villains more dangerous and that is what I would like to see here.

 

I think the Stormtroopers get a bad wrap. Their reputation is to be feared and they are highly trained. But they have to be decimated by the heroes. So I tend to think of the troopsers as actually a pretty serious threat but for the purposes of storytelling we have not seen their best moments. I think you will see something of their skill but they will also necessarily get mowed down.

 

Navy seals is a bit much. But yeah, I'd bet good money the new stormtroopers will be much more formidable.

 

I doubt the stormtroopers will be any different than back on TROTJ there were aggressive back then but I believe being controlled the darkside will only influence them, battle meditation will be the only advantage provided by Snoke.

 

Storm troopers came through and did their job in each of the OT movies. Then the tide gets turned on them. I love the storm troopers can't hit anything joke, and hope we see what is rumored in reference to it. I think they'll be on par. It would be funny to get an Easter egg Ewok in the background busking with a stormtrooper helmet. YUB NUB!

 

With this super-duper top secret screenshot I got from the toaster, the answer is no.

 

I'm thinking somewhere in-between. Mirroring the Tantive IV and Hoth assaults, they'll be effective against the unnamed Resistance soldiers, whereas they'll be somewhat akin to how they were in the OT in regards to the main characters (probably with a bit better skill, but obviously not enough to end the film quickly).

Hopefully the feeling we'll leave with is that, all-around, they're a pretty good threat.

I think (and hope) these new Stormtroopers are more accurate and menacing. I know it's a Disney film after all, but I want the bad guys to be BAD guys in every sense of the word, including them.

 

i couldn 't wote for "Yeah, like navy seals" because that good they will not be (& the ewok choice was funny) but i think they will be better than the OT troopers.

It would also be cool if Finn gets a backstory, not only as a soldier with high moral, but maybe also not that good at being a stormtrooper, that would be a fun way to describe why some troopers are so bad.

 

I think there is a distinct Wilhelm Scream moment in the star destroyer bay scene, where a Stromie goes airborne .

The new troopers look cool but I'm not digging the "storm troopers with capes" concept.
It is a tad to 70s for me. Like a few ads and comics where the 1970s era Cylons had weird capes.
The newer "Shadow Troopers" or special ops troopers are cool.
They might be more deadly or better with marksmanship.

 

It will always be how it is. Stormtroopers get their moments from time to time but obviously they can't fatally wound a important character. The comics are usually the place where you can see how bad-ass the stromtroopers are.

 

Somewhere in between I guess. ST simply must be better than in OT due to the focus put on them in this movie, for the sake of consistency. If one of main heroes, and one of main movie villains originated from them, they have to be at least a capable in fight so they don't undermine said characters. Should trained Jedi have a problem with them? If noticeably outnumbered, absolutely in smaller numbers not so much.

 

FWIW, Rebels is doing a very good job of maintaining the goofy stormtrooper image.

 

It is worth mentioning that it is only on Endor that the OT Stormtroopers are really stupid. They weren't great on Bespin, but on Hoth and aboard Tantive IV they kicked rebel arse. On Tatooine, they where "weak-minded" when Kenobi did his thing, but otherwise seemed efficient enough - and of course, they made short work of the Jawa Sandcrawler. Aboard the Death Star, they give the heroes real trouble, despite the helmet bump. If you regard the OT Stormtroopers without the Endor efforts in mind, they're not that bad. I'm sure the ST Stormtroopers will be at least as good as the OT Stormtroopers were at the best of times.

But, as @John Crichton said, the ST Stormtroopers will likely not stand much of a ground against named heroes. That's just how things are in Star Wars (although I hope to be proven wrong here).

 

I think the ST is where things will come full circle, and that includes the Troops. It's rumoured (ok, pretty much accepted now) that Finn is a Trooper who defects after witnessing the calloused brutality of his commanders. This sets an interesting precedent and one I expect to see echoing into EpVIII: if Snoke gives the order for the Array to be used and its affect kills as many FO forces as Resistance, then the calloused brutality is proven. Finn did the right thing and, most likely, other Troops will follow suit as the ST progresses. Possibly entire legions, all jumping ship to join the Resistance. Wouldn't you? Result: Troops fighting with the good guys, just like in the PT. (It's even possible Snoke is orchestrating this "union" for some higher purpose, I guess.)

So to answer the question, will the Troops be ****-eyed canon-fodder that couldn't hit a barn door at three paces - yes, until they join the good guys, then they'll be awesome, of course....

 

Actually, the goofiness came about with the meme culture on the internet. Rebels, have just rided on it simply because it's cool for kids to portray enemy fun fodder of war.

Prior to the internet, SW heroes simply had a force shield that defected blasters, however rebel troops were doomed as ST fodder...

While the Ewoks... well, lets just say it's George's first step into the PT.
